Title: Hippeastrum seed wanted
Post by: Catwheazle on January 08, 2022, 12:05:53 PM
Hi there,
Is someone cultivating Hippeastrum / Amaryllis natural forms here and would be willing to give me some seeds for postage replacement?
I only need a very small amount, i.e. 2-3 seeds. It is important, however, that it is a pure species.
thank you
Bernd

Bernd

The species forms of Hippeastrum are much sort after.  You can try some Facebook pages that I've seen seed offered.  If you want the links let me know.  The Pacific Bulb Society just published a book on the Hippeastrum of Bolivia.

Hi Bernd,

you can take a look at Rareplants.eu.

If you’re located in Germany or in another EU country: I have some young plants of Hippeastrum papilio.

Regards
Katharina

I have just tried to find the website again, but failed......................
There is a seed business in Chile? Peru? that I recently found by accident that offers what you are looking for, so certainly worth searching. The business, if memory is correct, specialised in plants from arid climates.

Absolutely not cheap, but have you checked RarePlants - Dr Christian, here in the UK? he would sell only bulbs, but any plants will be a near to 100% genuine species as he (anyone) can guarantee.

H. papilio is in trade in the UK, at around £5 per flowering-sized bulb.

you can try bazilplants.com : the seedlist : https://www.brazilplants.com/Seeds.html.  The owner of the site is very knowledgeable.  Juts drop hime an E-mail with the seeds you wish.  Some may be out of stock of course.  I have ordered hippeastrum seeds from him years ago and had good germination.  Unfortunately, hippeastrum species are difficult to grow and I lost most of the seedlings.  I only have one H. Psittacinum that survived.
