Title: I think this is vaccinium but what kind?
Post by: t5247rb on August 08, 2021, 02:57:41 PM
Hello, I originally thought this plant was bog bilberry Vaccinium uliginosum because it is in a bog in the Jura department of France but the bell like flowers of uliginosum seem to be more closed than what I see with this one.  Can anyone please confirm if this is uliginosum or some other species?

Thank you.

If there were no blue berries to see, I'd say this  is Vaccinium vitis-idaea  with neater foliage and more open-bells.

I think this is V. vitis-idaea isn't it Maggi? There are some discoloured leaves that look a bit bluish but I can't see any berries in the photo.

Yes, indeed, I do think it is V. vitis-idaea ..... I hadn't meant to imply that I'd spotted blue berries, I meant if there  was  no sign of them on any of the  bushes. ....  sorry for not being clear!

If it helps, V. vitis-idaea has green shiny leaves and V. uliginosum, as already mentioned has dull blue-ish green leaves. When seen from a short distance the colour is more easily noticed.

V. uliginosum.
