Meconopsis superba is going to flower this year
As far as I can gather from my records it was from my own collected seed sown in November 2011 and germinated in 2012. 2011 was the last time I had a flowering Mec. superba. I don't know how long this one lingered in a pot before being planted out. It is in a very dry spot sheltered by Salix x boydii and Rhododendron augustinii but seems very happy. The previous one I planted (not from my own seed) died in the very wet summer of 2012.

Very nice Roma. Do you find it necessary to protect the bigger rosettes against winter wet or is the shelter of a canopy enough?
I have seedlings sown in January from the seedex, so have some time to wait ...
-
Ashley, I don't protect the rosette. It is well sheltered by the rhododendron. I don't grow many monocarpic mecs. They need so much room. I think this superba is the 2nd or 3rd generation from my own seed. As far as I remember the original seed came from Harold McBride a very long time ago. It is self fertile. I've only had one plant flower at a time. I have lost one very furry Meconopsis (don't remember the species) in winter wet and one superba in a wet summer. I think the weather here is usually much drier than where you are but it varies considerably from year to year. It is raining now after being dry for weeks. I can't remember when last I had to put on a waterproof jacket to go out to feed the ponies.

Also I got seeds of M.suberba from seed ex. None have germinated yet, but the seed pots are outside and it's been cold April.
I was wondering the same thing as Ashley. Thank you Roma for the answer. :)
Last winter is rained a lot here, not snow but rain, and I lost two two-year old seedlings of M.napaulensis to wet, I think.
-
Mine germinated only a few weeks ago Leena, when temperatures finally rose, so yours may be waiting for the cold spell to pass.

Meconopsis integrifolia is the first Mec. in flower here:

Looks like I'm not going to get flowers on Meconopsis superba after all :'( I'm not sure what happened but the stem looks as if it was cut half through and the inflorescence is now pointing downwards. The buds are still ok but they are going to bury themselves in the soil if the half of the stem still left carries on growing. I'm not sure if it's been damaged or if it's been uneven uptake of water that has caused it. A friend was asking recently about her Allium 'Gladiator'. 3 out of 5 had bent over halfway up the stem. I suggested it might be fluctuating temperatures or moisture supply. Possibly the same applies to my Mec. I will be sorry to lose it as it is the third generation I have raised from the original, it takes a long time to flower and I don't have another coming on.

A big blue of some sort. It came to me from a seed exchange as M. x sarsonii, which it clearly is not! It is a very fine poppy however with big flowers - I fear it may be monocarpic though as both the rosettes are flowering.
-
That is a huge flower, and lovely blue. :)
Mine germinated only a few weeks ago Leena, when temperatures finally rose, so yours may be waiting for the cold spell to pass.
Almost all Meconopsis are now germinating :), so you were right Ashley. :)
-
Good to hear Leena 8)
Unfortunately slugs devoured more than half of my seedlings the very first night after transplanting >:( so I'm trying to guard the few survivors carefully.
-
Could this be a M. punicea sprouting? If so first ever for me.

Looks promising John; the first of many I hope.
Meanwhile you're already one up on me despite several attempts.

Since moving to Bo’ness, until this year I have been unable to find a suitable location to grow and keep alive Meconpsis.
Yesterday I was delighted to finally have one open.
Today a second one opened and it is pink. I am somewhat disappointed as I’m not really keen on these pink ones.

From Jim Jermym ay Granklyn Garden - a plant which he rates very highly....
Meconopsis ' David Smith'
[attachimg=1]
Ian Christie comments that: "David Smith was gardener at Ascreavie the home of George Sherriff for many years - a suitable tribute."
-
Again from Jim Jermyn -
"The original Meconopsis ‘Slieve Donard’ raised by Dr. Alec Curle, Edinburgh and passed on to his granddaughter Mrs Christian Curtis! We are pleased to have a representation of this famous cultivar, here at Branklyn. Registered in 1967 and recipient of an RHS AGM and an FCC."

Meconopsis ‘Dorothy Renton’. Photo Jim Jermyn

Jim says : " Perhaps one of the most important Blue Poppy cultivars grown here at Branklyn! The original owner and designer of this famous garden is commemorated with this beautiful cultivar: M. ‘Dorothy Renton’!"

Meconopsis 'Cruickshank' possibly synonymous with M. 'Bobby Masterton' but for sentimental reasons I prefer to keep the name I first knew it as. This was taken before the winds last weekend. They don't look so good now. I don't know why there's a paler one. Two plants were split up last year and they are all the same clone.

A self sown Meconopsis prattii or rudis. It's a few years since I have grown either here.

A perennial Meconopsis prattii. It doesn't flower which isn't much good.

Some photos from Colin Crosbie in Dumfries and Galloway ....
Mec. 'Biggar Park'
Colin writes: " It is a great plant, very tall compared to all the others and exceptionally floriferous.
It is normally a much deeper blue. I think the purple colouration must due to to the cold weather we had earlier in May or the drought we have had for two months.
The plant is in the trade and is being sold by several nurseries as Biggar Park and I think this should become the accepted name as it is a very distinct cultivar."

From Jim Jermyn at Branklyn ....
"It was with much relief that the Meconopsis Group were able to retrieve the famous Meconopsis cultivar M. ‘Branklyn’. We found it in the garden of Mr David Stewart Moore in Co. Antrim who had grown it since purchasing plants from Jack Drake’s Nursery! It’s now well established here in the garden after its name."

Thank you Maggi for posting these beautiful and interesting Meconopsis pictures. Big blue poppies have become my favourites now that I have found a spot in the garden where they like to grow. First one opened here just two days ago. :)
-
Again from Jim Jermyn --- "A lovely colour form amongst many from the Meconopsis x complexa Group"
[attachimg=1]
-
That is a very pretty pink/red! :)
I love these blue ones. This is my biggest ex 'Lingholm', grown from seed ex seeds in 2016 and is now flowering for the second time. Last year it's flowers were more purplish blue, maybe the weather affects the colour, because now there is no purplish in the flowers..
Still, they are very big, and some of the flowers have six petals, some five and one four. It is a king of the woodland bed!
How common is it that they have more than four flowers?
