Two new desirable introductions which are being bulked up and will be available iny st the near future, both absolute crackers!
The very strongly coloured 'Lemon and Lime' and a wonderful clump of 'Goldsmith'.
-
Some stunning introductions from Andy Byfield:
First, G. valentinei Fridge Magnet a wonderful, new, vigorous beauty as can be seen from the clump, with a lovely green fade on the inner.
[attachimg=1]
Another new special G. Ate Tea a delightful rizehensis with a striking inner marking and great shape.
[attachimg=2]
-
Yes we've already seen those on the January 2020 thread. I only hope they are being bulked up to be more generally available soon for everyone.
-
Hope to get those two yellows soon Brian, quite stunning.
-
Those are two lovely yellows, Brian! Very delectable - I can't wait. And unlike so many new ones these look really golden yellow.
-
'Green Besom' from the continent.
-
Dryad Gold Sceptre from Anne Wright and Dryad Nursery, a wonderful tall yellow.
[attachimg=1]
edit to rotate image.
-
Another must have, Green Besom. My wish list is getting very long Brian!
-
Lovely yellows Brian. A very strong colour.
-
Indeed! Brian, would You mind showing ´Goldsmith´again when the inners are visible?
Not introductions, just two seedlings I like.

Just for you Mariette, the inner marking of 'Goldsmith', some nice seedlings there.

Well 'Lemon and Lime' looks lovely and 'Goldsmith' looks intriguing, although we cannot see the inner markings yet. Are these snowdrops you have originated, Brian,?
-
I have amended my previous post Alan - as you can see there is now a picture of the inner marks on 'Goldsmith'.
-
A new byzantinus, ‘Albatross’ from Andy Byfield, a very vigorous variety with lovely inner markings. Bulked up tremendously in a year.
[attachimg=1]
-
Is anyone bulking that one up for the general galanthophile public?
-
One of the features I always like in snowdrop flowers is the lovely crinkly texture of the outers on, for instance, Diggory. A new variety in flower here just now, G. plicatus Kera, has deeply corrugated flowers in a wonderful balloon shape. It is shorter than Diggory. It is a seedling sent to me from Estonia, and was bred by Suur Tilk.
edit : I have an update from Taavi Tuulik, who gave me 'Kera'. I had misunderstood his description of its origin, which I am now happy to correct:
KERA was bred by Taavi Tuulik from the cultivar 'Suur Tilk', which itself was bred by Sulev Savisaar.

I must admit that I love that effect too, will you have it available soon?
-
Here is one that will be available in the very near future - probably the end of next week when the catalogue returns from the printers. It demonstrates how galanthophiles like to share their good finds. This is Galanthus 'Green Whisp' available for the first time generally from North Green.
the barely opening flower on it’s particularly long pedicel resembles an old fashioned tear-glass bottle streaked all over with green, both inside and out.
Discovered by the generous Belgian galanthophile Johan Mens and given to the late, and greatly missed, Veronica Cross. In turn this was passed to John Morley who has bulked it up so that it is now generally available to us all. I queried the name and was told that a whisp is a collective noun for a flock of snipe.
-
Excellent Brian, hope there is one with my name onit. Frustrating to see some that never appear for us mere mortals!
-
Just for you Mariette, the inner marking of 'Goldsmith'...
Thank You so much, Brian! As Anne pointed out, it´s always helpful to learn from other collectors which new yellows are really worthwhile acquiring.

Brian - the best and strongest yellow I have ever seen!

Love the name! Some many good ones on the continent.

Yes they are John, glad you like them. Also there will be this from Wol and Sue at Glen Chantry, to join the 'Chantry Cracker'! A wonderful new Galanthus plicatus ‘Chantry Gold Cross’...has a long narrow golden ovary with a distinctive golden X-shaped mark on the inner segment.
(This is GC58)
-
Such a pity that Wol and Sue were not able to attend a number of their planned Snowdrop Season events - I know they were sorely missed at the AGS Snowdrop Day at Newport on Saturday.
Pix from the day from Helen Brown, of Littleash -on Twitter .....

[attachimg=2]
Let's hope Wol is much better, very soon!
-
In view of Helen Brown's picture, here is the queue from the other end!

Another of the new introductions to be available later this week in the North Green Catalogue. I know one person was very enthusiastic about this one on Monday when he saw it in the garden - and I value his opinion! I will have to look and see what it is doing in our garden - it is called 'Odd Scharlock'
-
The culmination of Anne Wright's Dryad Gold series, her new one Dryad Gold Standard, tall and beautiful.

From Richard Bashford a delightful snowdrop named 'Moonshine' where the scape and pedicel are decidedly paler than the receptacle. Most unusual and not seen on other threads.

That's a top drawer drop Brian! Most desirable 😍

Great ones you've posted Brian. 'Moonshine' is extraordinary.

Richard has a wonderful eye for a snowdrop John, and he is a really good grower. He and his partner Val have a wonderful garden and we were delighted to visit them some time ago. That's a top drawer drop Brian! Most desirable 😍
He has many new drops in the pipeline and it will be great to show you on here when they do become available Dean .
-
Brian: i would like to stake my name on one as well. Just downloaded the catalogue!

I think you may have downloaded last years catalogue it should say 2020 on the cover....

Yes Brian. Woodchippings always provide an instant clump with their pots. I was delighted with 'Swanton' recently which had 4 in a pot! They are affordable to us mere mortals too which stops the new snowdrop world being only available to the wealthy or well connected. It would be awful if growing snowdrops becomes an elitist pastime.
-
Ian Young was speaking at the recent AGS Snowdrop Day and he tells me that watching the people come into the hall, the stall they headed to first was Woodchippings - he also noted that the pots there all had numerous bulbs in them.
-
A new introduction from Andy Byfield, Galanthus gracilis ‘Snow Flurry’. This is bulking well and is a wonderful addition to Andy's deep green series. Always good to have some idea of how these new ones perform in the garden.
[attachimg=1]

Another which is actually available later this week was actually found by those great galanthophiles David and Ruby Baker. It is an inverse poculiform which is very slow to increase - but worth the wait! Not surprisingly it is called 'Never Before'

It reminds me of 'Cutie-Pie'; is it another nivalis?

My I do like that one! And fond memory of meeting Ruby Baker at an RHS Show. She was so very pleasant and easy to get along with, an honorable Galanthophile.

That's another super cute ipoc Brian! So good of you to share varieties that will be available to Joe Public, thank you 👍

I have heard from several of the attendees who stated that the BD's presentation was the outstanding highlight of the day Maggs!
-
'Evenley Double' was found by the late Timothy Whiteley in his Evenley Woods. A super double with very dark green apical marks and green tips to the outers. Also available later this week.
-
'Evenley Double' has pretty markings. Are there two flower stems in your picture, Brian? I thought for a moment that it was a twin-scape? It was first shown in the forum in 2015.
Edit to add : Evenley Wood Garden
2nd February – 3 March, Northamptonshire
"Enjoy over 80 varieties of snowdrop at this beautiful 60-acre woodland garden, such as Galanthus ‘Evenley Double’, a special snowdrop which was developed and propagated on site, and other notable varieties like ‘Hill Poe’ and ‘Lady Beatrix Stanley’. Roaming guinea fowl included."

Another new introduction performing in the garden today, G. Ristpart, (Shelduck) in Estonian and part of the 'Estonian Birds Group'. A lovely double from Anne Wright and Dryad Nursery, originally from Taavi Tuulik.
[attachimg=1]
Great to see some new doubles from a first class supplier.

Superb drop! 😊 Do you hold a National Collection of Galanthus now Ingrid? You seem to have so many varieties not in general circulation yet. Sorry for my ignorance if you do but I've been away from social media and the forum for a few years after being viciously, anonymously trolled about my opinions on all things Galanthus.

We in the SRGC Web Team are well aware of the amount of extremely unpleasant comments that may be found on social media platforms, particularly it seems in the snowdrop world - rest assured that any such nastiness will not be tolerated here and such comments and the authors will be removed

I'm very glad to hear that . Absolutely no need for it .👍

Sorry Alan, I missed that comment. Yes I am told it is a nivalis.

Well I hope I don't get 'drummed out of the brownies' by asking if you are growing it in the garden Ingrid - or just in the pot like this looks to be.

Another one from Richard Bashford for my wish-list after ´Sabine´, kindly shown by Maggi here!
I really do appreciate such pics which give an idea what a group of snowdrops will look in the garden, as a harmonious relation between flowers and leaves is an important criterion.
-
Mariette: Your last s'drop is very exciting! So many lovely details.
-
Thank You, WSGR, I like it very much, too! :)

Some unusual new introductions made this week at Shaftesbury .... Galanthus cutlerii ;)
They are quite tall at 26.5 cm and 28cm - and seem very robust! 8) :-X
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
Countryfile the TV programme was filming at Shaftesbury before the Snowdrop Study Day and I think that will be shown on 23rd February.

Recently seen on eBay from the amazing hybridizer Joe Sharman of Monksilver Nursery:
The first double poculiform. Once I realised I knew enough about snowdrop breeding to create doubles to order I started the process of creating the double poculiform. This was my first result. Huge fat flowers in bud with many almost white petals. The amount of green varies from year to year but is far less than in any other double. The flowers go on expanding to become huge. A short but very vigorous and free-flowering plant.
-
'Ice Princess' from Sharman - recently seen on sale at the AGS day for £500 - plenty high prices around for the rare 'drops!

It sold for much the same online Maggi.
-
A new one from Ian Christie, 'Castle the Maules'. A great addition to the 'Castle series', with a wonderful bleed on the inner.
[attachimg=1]
-
I must say I've never seen anything like ice princess before Brian,
very beautiful and a lovely name too. Interesting too after the talk
at East Ruston as to what is still to come in snowdrops.
-
Thisone is truly remarkable Brian!
johnw
-
Brian, 'Ice Princess' is really something new and wonderful. Like double Leucojum.
I understand the price, but I hope it is a vigorous variety so that the price will go down in next ten years. Can't wait! :)
-
'Ice Princess' from Sharman - recently seen on sale at the AGS day ...
Trouble was, in his talk on Poculiform Snowdrops, Joe Sharman showed pictures of some even "better" ones still in the pipeline, pure white (I think) and looking reminiscent of a Dahlia.
-
Anyway, I admire Joe for imagining new forms of snowdrops worthwhile developing and succeeding after many years of hard work, like he did with his masterpiece ´Golden Fleece´. Snowdrops resulting from such efforts are far more worth their money than the many chance seedlings or finds offered at similar prices.
-

I thought that would perhaps be the case Alan as he said
This was my first result.
implying there were better ones in the future. He has a good understanding now of the breeding process so we must watch this space!!
I agree with Mariette that he has worked very hard in producing this and deserves the plaudits. At least he is producing something very different, as he did with the wonderful 'Golden Fleece' rather than yet another G.sandersii or whatever which looks much the same.
-
One of Andy Byfield's introductions Fridge Magnet, looking delightful in today's sunshine. It has been flowering for ages and has clumped very well.
[attachimg=1]
-
Have you considered opening a thread for all Andy Byfield introductions as Anne did for all the Dryads.?
-

There is more than one Gert Jan known in the forum - but I think the Gert Jan referred to by Brian is Gert Jan van der Kolk, who has introduced a number of fine snowdrops. Hopefully Brian will help with that.
Yes indeed Maggi it was Gert Jan Van der Kolk, I suppose I ought to have started this thread then but I won't post the picture yet again as it can be found there.
-
Galanthus Ristpart, a new double of Estonian origin, being offered tonight by Anne Wright on Ebay! It is a beautiful drop and grows well!

Anne Repnow gave a talk to the Snowdrop Group of the HPS in Tuxford yesterday (16/2/20). This was on the snowdrops she grows in her garden and featured one called 'Brian Ellis' which was certainly new to me. Unfortunately I don't have a picture - but perhaps Brian can oblige?
-
I don't have a photo, but I believe G. 'Brian Ellis was found in area of the Greatorex 'drops.
-
Maggi & Alan - I've known Brian for donkey years and not once has he mentioned a "Brian Ellis'. Such modesty, and such wisdom and generosity to the Galanthus world over there certainly deserves to be so honoured. Made my day. Now we need a photo!

-
You are much too kind John, I went out this morning to take a photo of my clump, sadly it looks like this. I don't have any other photos myself so perhaps Anne Repnow will kindly post hers? Maggi is correct in that Joe Sharman and Richard Hobbs found it in snowdrop acre, the old Greatorex plot. Joe had bulked it up for sale and approached me to say that they would like to name it for me. I was flabbergasted as I am sure there are others more worthy, however, it appeared in Joe's sales last year so is available. Even though I say it myself it is a very nice snowdrop and a Norfolk one too!

Here is another new double from Joe: Galanthus 'Betty Hughes' - who needed a crutch after recent gales buffeted her. Lovely rounded flower, inners nicely marked and always a long "tooth" in the middle
