Title: Spring treasures in Rhodes
Post by: Yann on April 12, 2019, 08:17:11 PM
Back from the island, here're some of the plants seen.
The winter was rainy, this spring is very wet and so many orchids are at their best.

I think it's time to show other plants...but i still have several orchids to post  ::)

In the heart of the island a range of low mountains host many rare plants.
Profitis Ilias is the most famous area where grow Paeonia rhodia, the plants are easy to reach.
But i wanted to repay a visit to a spot in discovered by chance 40km from there, in a deep gorge very difficult to access.
The effort was rewarded, the spot is intact as i discovered it in 2001.

These plants are found only 20m from the top of the gorge, they receive the sun at the end of the afternoon

Here's a very rare and critically endangered plant : Centaurea lactuciflora

One site is accessible along the road, all the others spots are not easy to reach, the one i visited has a 60% hill (1 foot ahead, 2 backward).

[attachimg=5]

After 20mn of ascent the graal is visible.

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

Still 5mn to access the foot hill

thank you Thomas, to be at the right time is always a poker party. This year the late season in the Balkans offer us a lot of blossoms.
My best season for the last 20 years while in my country the drought is disastrous.

Yes Hans but no ones were in bloom, it's a very late season.

At lake Gadoura they were just poping up the soil. Instead i found torrent of mud!

I've postpone my northern Greece travel to end of may most of the higher plants are still under snow.

Amazing! I have done so many trips to Rhodes in past years and I’m sure I will do even more in upcoming ones. Greece provides a travel experience that mixes the best of both worlds - relaxation and adventure. This is an ideal and unique travel experience for me, making it my dream vacation spot. We also used Rhodes Airport Transfer (https://aktis.taxi/Greece/Rhodes+Island+Airport+Diagoras+RHO) in our trip and they provided wonderful service and were cheaper than one alternative I checked.

Indeed, after visiting for job/leisures more than 42 countries i never found such feeling in any other country.
I never "used" such services company but always rent a car.

Not  on Rhodes, but if  someone  likes the  idea of  a  Greek holiday,  there  is  a wonderful place to stay in Stoúpa, Lakonia, Greece, I  can suggest  here:   http://www.fryle.se (http://www.fryle.se)  where you  can  learn about  the guest  apartment   of  Leif and  Christina Fryle - a  fine  couple  who are  great friends  of  SRGC! The apartment is near the  village  of Agios Nikolaos
