Title: Saxifrage looking sick - help.
Post by: Jupiter on January 08, 2019, 09:07:39 PM

My only plant of Sax. marginata coryophylla lutea is looking worse and worse. I'm not sure what the issue is. Waterlogging perhaps? I'm hesitant to lift it but maybe that's the best course of action? If it dies I may not be able to replace it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My Saxes sometimes start to look like this after excessive heat and associated dryness. Unfortunately the symptoms don't show up immediately so by the time you notice problems it can be too late!

Yep, I feared that heat exposure might be the problem. Fermi you're right, I need to take cuttings. I hope it's not too late. Does Vivienne Condon have all of these growing? I hope someone will look after Otto's collection better than I can.. Adelaide is far from ideal!

I generally get two problems - the roots rot in winter (or it might be vine weevil activity in autumn) and burning/ dryness when it gets hot.

If it's burning/ dryness I find it affects the middle of the plant (same thing for cushion mossy saxs).

I generally find cutting will take easily if kept damp and shaded.

I suspect as it's summer there it will be the heat and it will recover and grow over - but it's worth having some cutting raised plants as insurance or to try elsewhere.

I'm still learning after 40 years - and unlearning some of the things I learnt.
