Title: Nerine 2018
Post by: fermi de Sousa on March 18, 2018, 11:55:32 AM
The first nerine to flower this year, Nerine angulata, came from Murray Cubis in 2001 but I'd not seen it flower for a while
cheers

Nerine 'Ariel' is an old hybrid I got from my mentor in Rock Gardening, Ruth Tindale, back in the late 1980s.
The first pic is of the established clump which is in the shade of a rose bush and the second is from a few bulbs I moved to the rock garden but sheltered by Zauschneria cana (syn Epilobium canum), but each has only managed a single stem this year,
cheers

This is Nerine filifolia which I got from Garry Reid, a respectable bulb grower, so I think that it's correct (last year there was considerable discussion about my mis-named nerines!)

This is what is known in Australia as Nerine fothergilla 'Major' (AKA N. "Fothergilla Major", N. fothergilii 'Major') which The Plant List lumps into Nerine sarniensis.
I won't be changing labels anytime soon,
cheers

In the 1990s I crossed Nerine rosea with Nerine fothergilla 'Major' and got a few seedlings - rather neglected for years one finally flowered in 2005 (not sure if I posted a pic to the previous version of the Forum). I planted them out 2 years ago and one (the same one?) has flowered this year

We visited our friend Cathy in Macedon which has a much cooler climate than ours.
She grows a lot of nerines and has had many more flowers than ours.
Here are a few of her flowers, including the hybrid 'Gilbert Errey' named for an early horticultural hybridist in Victoria

This winter flowering nerine came from a neighbour and I think it is a form of Nerine undulata.
It seems to be a pink version of what we call N. flexuosa "Alba" - the popular white one which started flowering at the end of April

This is the nerine I originally got as Nerine crispa but it's apparently now lumped in with N. humilis ...or undulatus, I forget and I'm not changing labels!
The first pic is from late May and the second shows the flower-heads today - some still fresh but some in seed
cheers

This is a little nerine I grew from seed as Nerine filifolia but either it had been hybridised or the parent plant was mislabelled!
Unfortunately I no longer have the parent plant to compare,

I gave my Nerine sarensis a good soak in early July this year- as last year I left it till the end of July and now Ive got six flowering in total. Never had this before!

So I am very excited even through they are months early.

This one is a plain Sarensis

This one is called 'Copperhead' and it flowered three years ago and  got accidentally decapitated on the day it was about to open. Oh dear.

So finally I get to see it and its pretty amazing.

This one is Nerine Dingaan and its pretty breathtaking -the camera doesn't quite pick up the colours properly though. The flowers are much smaller than the others.

I wonder if anyone else has this early flowering phenomena in Scotland?

These two-tone types - seemingly  equipped with metallic finish ( which I believe in cars comes at extra cost!! ;) ) are very fetching. I think some forumists grow a selection of these - I remember  pictures from earlier years , notably from JohnW in Canada I think- but this does seem early in the season.

Hi Fermi
I’ve got a number of nerines and the outdoor ones do quite well. But when it comes to the indoor ones I really struggle to even get them to flower at all. We had a speaker come this year to our HPS group and he said crowd them in the pot and plant the bulbs 50% above the soil. I did this but my sarniensis has now lost its leaves. And my chunky clump of filifolia has yet to flower at all.  Help!  Btw, the amaryllis cerise you gave me are getting bigger now and the crossyne is also ok, but still too small to flower I think.

Certainly does.  Here they're all still sound asleep, and probably will be for another month or so.

Hi Chris,
I don't have much experience of growing nerines in pots other than keeping some under shade-cloth to reduce the effect of frost. I think Ashley or John W would be better able to advise you.
Glad to know that you are going well with the Amaryllis and Crossyne - they do take a while to get to flowering size - feed well and keep as warm as possible when dormant. Good luck!
cheers

I was walking in the bush in an old gold mining area a few weeks ago with my son Hugo, and we found clumps of a bulb in an old abandoned cottage. I'm pretty sure they were Nerine as they had narrower leaves than Amaryllis and smaller fruit arranged radially around the umbel, pinkish in colour. I will dig some up and move them to my garden and we will see! Fingers crossed they'll be something interesting.

This one came as Nerine platypetala. Looks Alot like N masonoirum (on right in second photo)

Differences i see are slightly wider leaf diameter and one petal points down in N platypetala.
Is this tagged correctly?

Nerine from exbury looking amazing - so far my favourite has been 'dingaan' but it didn't set any viable seeds.

Like this year, in future years I'm going to give a monthly spray to keep the roots alive through summer and a soak in early July. Even if they're all so early at least they're flowering.

The garden nerines are also sending up flowers too

Maybe an hybrid ?
Compared with pictures on the web, your "N. patypetala" is quite different (color, form of the petal, form of the flower) and I see less differences between this nerine and your N. masoniorum.

Nerine 'Afterglow'

Amazing Nerines, Ralph. I particularly like 'Afterglow' and 'Wolsey'. Must see if I can find a retailer for them. Before I got the 'bulb bug' proper, I tried N. sarniensis but never got a flower out of it. Are  these red Nerines easier to flower?

I grow 1 Nerine under cold glass, N. 'Zeal Giant', and it is now bulking up nicely. I've got 4 flower scapes on the plant  6(?) years after purchase.

[attach=1]

And another one in a pot is N. undulata. Never know if that is the proper name for it.

A busy Nerine season here, about 50 oir more of Sir Peter Smithers' crosses are flowering.  Many do so for the first time.

1. Nerine 1st Seedlings - largest bulbs SPS-X6 with  Nerine PS-08-04 'David Lionel' x 'Hotspur' the purple in the right fore corner.
2. Nerine PS-01-01   {['Durru Shehvar'  x ('Belladonna' x 'Stephanie')-26425a]  x  (Mrs. Cooper x Victor')-25504b}, with
3. Nerine PS-10-12 [('Tibet' x ('Wavebush' x 'Foudroyant')-27320b)]-30707 small

They all seem to be about a month late this year as the heat really did not abate until September.

Join the Nerine and Amaryllid Society. They have a twice yearly bulb exchange, which is where most of mine came from.

I'm sure there is a regime which will ensure maximum flower production, but I haven't mastered it yet. Some of my N. sarniensis cultivars flower, but the majority just produce leaves. Maybe they need more time to reach flowering size. It's the same with the N. bowdenii cultivars. The smaller species such as N. humilis are more reliable flowerers for me.

Nerine 'Elegance' flowering in a pot here. Camera doesn't really record the shade accurately - it is a very intense Barbie-pink. I also have a couple of bowdenii 'Alba' flowering against a brick wall but the rest of my potted plants have decided not to flower which surprised me after the hot summer we have had.
