After a stormy night, yesterday was sunny and the temperature jumped up to 30°C here. I checked my outside bench and spot Narcissus ‘Craigton Chorister’ just pushed its leaves through the soil :) I’m really looking forward to seeing its first flowers here because it didn’t flower by jet lag or something last season. It’s the earliest petticoat daffs showing its leaves in my collection.
-
Craigton Chorister is one I haven't heard of. I looked on daffseek but didn't see it. Any details?

Craigton Clumper looks an amazing bulbo.

Welcome to the SRGC Forum, Dave :D
You can see details of Narcissus 'Craigton Chorister' on SRGC BULB LOG 50, 2013 (http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/logdir/2013Dec111386763933BULB_LOG_50.pdf) ;)

Thanks YT.
The photos are great and clearly show its size and cup shape. Hope it flowers for you.
Dave.

and now the start for the autumn flowering species (NH)
Narcissus cavanillesii, N. elegans - Spanish mainland form (N. malacitanus) and N. miniatus (obsoletus)
Gerd
-
Lovely flowers. I'm hoping my malacitanus will flower here in 6 months. I have two pots, including one labelled "multiflowered". I don't have cavanillesii yet, but obsoletus is doing very well, and has flowered for two years.
-
Gerd,
it's always a treat your autumn daffs!
cheers

Only for those brave enough to grow plants with very rude names Maggi? ;) ;D

Tee Hee! Perhaps we should try that, Ashley?!! I'll suggest it to Ian ::)

Too good an opportunity to miss :o :o :o ;D

Will have to keep an eye open for some of them then.

Have made a note, Dave! Have also reminded Ian that he hasn't registered Craigton Chorister yet!
-
My Craigtons are up too. Must get the shading off the greenhouse now the leaves are coming.
-
You have daffodils in the northern hemisphere too?! :o ;) :D
-
I have shoots sprouting from my seeds ex 'Craigton Chorister' - thanks Matt.
-
I have shoots coming up from Don steed and a number of my own bulbo seedlings. Verdant sparks and seasons greetings are also in leaf. Coming for a flower this year from seasons greetings. Only foliage last year.
Photo is bulbo cross I made.

Narcissus miniatus, JJA 702.259. Turkey, Içel, E of Akdere. 185m. R. & R. Wallis 08-122.
There are many seedlings in this pot but I only have a flower same as last year :( I have to feed them more.

Narcissus 'Sweet Claudia' (N. viridiflorus x serotinus) :) Today's a sunny and warm but bit windy.
-
Oh, my, 'Sweet Claudia' is very beautiful.
-
It is. Is it available in the UK/EU?

Hello, Ralph. It's only sold from Komoriya Nursery in Japan.
May be they will sell the bulbs on their e-bay store (http://stores.ebay.com/komoriyanursery/) later.
-
Very nice. 8)

Glad to hear it, Anthony.
After a couple of weeks away I'm pleased to find a strong potful of seedlings of a hybrid Narcissus of my own making with one parent being 'Craigton Clumper'. Clearly very vigorous genes from the 'Craigton' stable.
-
A pot of Narcissus 'Sweet Claudia' is almost full blooming today. Its colours turned paler than 2 days ago.

Look forward to see photos of these new seedlings.

I don't understand why the commercial sources put such names when this plant is currently described as Narcissus x alleniae.
The correct parents, are N. obsoletus x N. viridiflorus . I am not sure if N. serotinus x N. viridiflorus is described in the nature which is only possible in North Morocco.
For the people more analytic:
N. obsoletus x N. viridiflorus = Narcissus x alleniae nothovar. alleniae
N. viridiflorus x N. obsoletus = Narcissus x alleniae nothovar. rutherfordii
-
Makes them easier to sell Rafa ;)
-
Well potting of my show standard narcissus is just about done. 116 pots. Most containing 5 or 7 bulbs. Miniatures are in the tunnel already. These flowers are generally only used for the earlier shows as field grown flowers cover mid to late season shows. These pot flowers will also be used for breeding as better control over pollination.
-
Always very satisfying to be able to look over a fine stack of pots like that, Dave - full of promise , eh?
Rather daunting though, at the star of the task, when you begin to contemplate the amount of compost needed etc..... we do put ourselves through the mill for this pleasure, don't we?
-
Does the compost not fall out? ;D
-
Due to our position on the side of the Earth the compost is actually kept in.
I have uploaded the photos from my iPhone and not yet worked out how to rotate the photo on the forum. ;)

Anthony that has made me laugh out my Sunday morning coffee. Hilarious.
-
I can get you some of this sand Dave.
-
I'm surrounded by hooligans...... and comedians ;D ;D ;D bless you, every one!
Here are Daves's pots ..... feeling a tad more stable.....[attachimg=1]

Many thanks Maggi. I should really take photos with my proper dslr and use my computer in the house.

Narcissus rupicola x serotinus ‘Autumn Little Moon’
N. rupicola is shy to flower here but this hybrid is floriferous :)
-
That's a beautiful hybrid, Tatsuo. 8) Did you make the cross yourself? Was wondering if N.rupicola was the seed or pollen parent? The hybrid appears to have inherited a lot of its character from N.serotinus.
-
Very pretty. Is it fertile?

Thanks, Matt. It's not my own hybrid, bred and introduced by Komoriya Nursery (http://item.rakuten.co.jp/komoriya-nursery/2narhalm1/).
As you've already known that seed parent is always first ;)
Very pretty. Is it fertile?
Hello, Anthony. It has never yet set seeds here. Perhaps it's sterile, but I'm just trying hand pollination this season.
-
Tatsuo those look lovely. Well done. Do you just grow for pleasure or are there shows to display at?
At this time of the year, when winter is quickly approaching, it is great to see that flash of yellow that makes you think of spring.

Thank you, Dave :) Growing daffodils is just for my pleasure. Sharing pictures at the forum is too!

We put our selves through this because we love it. I can't think of a more enjoyable interest to have. Also the reward far out ways the initial hard work. I can't wait to see the first sign of growth. I have started to expand my areas of interest to stretch out the joys of new flowers and foliage.

For me, one of the best things about growing bulbs in pots is the exquisite pleasure that is best described as "pot-fondling" !! This is the gentle stroking of plastic pots to feel their bulging sides with their promise of a fine harvest of fat bulbs inside. ::) :D Bliss, just bliss! 8)
-
plants that I pictured in past days and posted on FB, I would also like to show you here
1. N. obsoletus
2. N. obsoletus with 3 flowers per stem
3. N. serotinus
4. N. x perez-larae, N. cavanillesii and N. obsoletus
5. N. cavanillesii

Narcissus viridiflorus and Narcissus elegans

Narcissus elegans
-
Narcissus elegans and Narcissus elegans f. aurantiacus
-
and finally Narcissus Ms. 'Sweet Claudia' ;D
-
Hi Rafa great pictures of some lovely narcissus, I've been meaning to ask you, how did your friend get on with that lily I sent you?
-
Don't know John, long time since I haven't any news from him. I hope they could grow them fine...
-
Yes I hope so.
-
Perfect - if only my daffodil season started so early! I will enjoy yours instead. Do they smell sweetly?
-
Narcissus elegans. What has happened to N. malacitanus?
-
Yes! they have a very well scent!.
Anthony, N. malacitanus and N. elegans are the same species for most of people, although it has been published with this name. I tried to find any differences with other collections that I grow from Mallorca and Algeria. It seems to be very close to the Algerian plants.... (the real different plant from N. elegans, are the plants I grow from Mallorca) maybe the plants from Malaga are more robust with more flowers, I think this is because grow conditions. What ever it is, I think these plants from Malaga, should be very pure genetically as there aren't any other species with it, like in other localities.
-
Your photographs always inspire me, Rafa, such beauty, such "elegans"! 8)
-
Now a new batch of autumn flowers
1. + 2. Narcissus cavanillesii x viridiflorus - plant ex an artificial cross made by Prof. Theo Sanders, Essen
3. Narcissus tazetta x miniatus - continues to develope a lot of flowers every year
4. Narcissus x perezlarae (miniatus x cavanillesii) - the larger and reliably flowering type
5. Narcissus x xanthochlorus - suspected of the same cross as no. 1. + 2. or perhaps a paler version of N. viridiflorus
Gerd
-
Rafa & Tatsuo,
Enjoyed your photos very much!
@Rafa: Did you find Narcissus cavanillesii and N. viridiflorus flowering at the same time and close together?
I am interested in this fact because this is the prerequisite for buidling hybrids, here in cultivation cavanillesii is over when
viridiflorus starts.
Gerd
-
How very beautiful AND interesting, Gerd!
-
All are lovely hybrids, Gerd 8) I like the no. 3 and 4 most :P
-
Gerd, you make this old woman very happy with these photos of your Narcissus - these types are so unusual and so very interesting. Thank you!
-
Narcissus romieuxii var zaianicus is my first one to bloom.
-
Thanks for kind comments!
@Maggi: glad to hear this - it isn't easy for an old man to make old women happy! ;D
Gerd
-
Less of the 'old', Gerd!
