SEED DONATIONS Now / AUTUMN 2015
SRGC is very grateful to all those Members who donate seed to the Exchange. The bonus of being a seed donor is that you get 25 packets of seed in the main Seed Distribution (only 16 if you are a non-donor) - and Donors are given priority in the Seed Distribution.
Please send fresh clean seed as early as possible, and no later than 31st October.
Send seed to Ian and Carole Bainbridge :
Drs Ian and Carole Bainbridge
Luckie Harg’s, Anwoth Road, Gatehouse of Fleet, Castle Douglas, DG7 2EF, Scotland.
Late seed can be accepted if a list has been sent by post or e-mail by 31st October. Please send e-mails to seed@srgc.org.uk
The seed list will be compiled on 1st November, so late seed may well not be in the exchange.
Please: Write the full name of the seed on each packet of seed, and your name as well.
Put all seed of one type in one packet.
Use small packets when possible (and avoid very big packets!).
Supply a list of donated seed in alphabetical order.
Please put your e-mail and phone number on your list in case we have any queries.
Provide comments on any new or rare seed.
Please support the Seed Exchange by donating seed each year.
Full Seed Exchange details are here : http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
All seed correspondence, lists and queries etccan be sent to: seed@srgc.org.uk

Seed Identification : photos of named seed varieties.
This forum has a topic which is exclusively for posting photographs of named, fully identified, seeds.
The object is to work towards as full a listing of verified seeds as possible.
We invite you to post photos of fully identified seeds to this thread, HERE (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=4426.0)
Please do not post comments or questions in that thread, or photos of seed of which you are unsure of the ID. Such matters may be posted here: http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1010.0 (http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1010.0)
The photos must conform to the usual Forum restrictions i.e. maximum 760 pixels wide and must include something to indicate the size of the seed, preferably using a background of 1mm graph paper or a metric ruler. The inclusion in the photo of the plant name is a distinct advantage.
Wherever possible, please include the plant name in the name of the photo file and always include the plant name in the text of the post…. otherwise it is impossible to search for the image.
Thank you!

Sending seeds to other countries.
Different countries have different regulations governing the import of seeds ( and plants, of course) . For some, such as the USA, a special permit is required in order to receive any seed from outside the USA.

Our sister organisation NARGS, has a useful list of prohibted seed for the USA : https://www.nargs.org/restricted-seed (https://www.nargs.org/restricted-seed) USA restricted seed listing

What are the Requirements for sending seed to Australia?
http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/icon-icd?wasRedirectedByModule=true (http://www.agriculture.gov.au/import/icon-icd?wasRedirectedByModule=true) Australian site for Import conditions
Some notes on Australian regulations:
Seeds can only be sent to Australia if they meet the following
requirements:
• They are on the Australian Government’s permitted seed list, and are
not otherwise prohibited from being imported into Australia.
• Each shipment of permitted seeds must be clearly labelled in English
with the full botanical name, genus and species.
• Seed must be free of live insects, soil, disease symptoms, prohibited
seeds, other plant material (e.g. leaf, stem material, fruit pulp, pod
material, etc.), animal material (e.g. animal faeces, feathers, etc.),
and any other extraneous contamination of quarantine concern.
• If the seeds require an import permit from the Department of
Agriculture, sellers must sight a copy of the permit to ensure that they
can meet the conditions for sending seeds to Australia.
• Freight or mail shipments should have all documentation (e.g. permit or
permit number, invoice, manufacturer’s declarations and certification
where applicable) securely attached to the outside of the package and
clearly marked ‘Attention Quarantine’.
All seeds sent by the Scottish Rock Garden Club Seed Exchange to our members
around the world do, of course, conform to the regulations of each country
to which they are sent, not just Australia.
The SRGC would like to draw readers' attention to the need for those sending plant seed
to other countries to be aware of the regulations pertaining to that country.
All seeds sent by the Scottish Rock Garden Club Seed Exchange to our members
around the world do, of course, conform to the regulations of each country
to which they are sent, not just Australia.

OK Maggi , i prepare some packet for sending ;D... I hope we have many species to choose in the exchange :P

Will seedexchange.org.uk be used again this year for seedex orders? If so, when is it expected to be available? If not, where/how will the seed exchange password be used?
Also, has the new (15/16) seed list been made available online anywhere?
I apologize if the answers to any of the questions above have been published somewhere, but I've looked around and have not found this information.
Cheers,
Erik

Hello Erik,
Yes, Seed exchange page on the main site will link to that address when the seedlist is active. That will not be for some time yet. The Seedlist is just being finished and will soon go to the printer. It will be available online when the Seed Exchange goes "live" - it will be announced here and on the main site (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) when that happens. The password is in the July Secretary's Pages, sent to all members who receive their journals by post - the Sec. Pages are online (http://files.srgc.net/journals/SRGCSec_Pages_web.pdf) for e-subscription members- (though they can also find it in their online profile pages) and those who have lost the relevant paperwork - and it will be in the printed seedlist, of course.
The Seed exchange process will be slightly different this year - everyone using the online seed system will need to register and enter with their full postal address for instance. This is because of new rules being implemented by the secure online payment platform. Of course all details will be shown in the course of the the process when the time comes. There is little point in trying to explain it here - it will be quite clear when members register.
Remember that some email systems will NOT deliver your automated activation email etc. at all, or may scoop it into your SPAM filter. Also remember that you must register anew each year.
We expect that the Seed list and Seed service will be opened later this month - we will hear from the Seed Team.
All seed correspondence, lists and queries etc can be sent to: seed@srgc.org.uk

Seed Information Database
The SRGC now has a member-contributed seed/plant information database.
If you have made a donation to the SRGC Seed Exchange, please take a moment to share information about the species you've donated. And whether or not you've donated seed, share information about any worthy garden plant you grow or have grown, no matter how it was propagated.
You can read about it and take part here :
http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=13727.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=13727.0)
The SRGC is grateful to Erik Fleischer in Canada for developing this system
-
Thanks, Maggi. I did have the password , but wasn't sure how it was going to be used.
Cheers
edit by maggi : Happy to help, Erik.

The online ordering service of the SRGC Seed Exchange is now live to accept your seed requests or payment for postal seed requests.
There are some changes from previous years, caused by new rules from the secure online payment system so PLEASE do read the notes and instructions carefully!
It is most important to note that a new registration MUST be made each year - old log in details will not work.
The Seed Exchange page of the website is found under the "About Us " button on the SRGC website.
Direct link to that web page is HERE (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)

Hello Maggi and Seed Team Members!
Thank you very much for your contribution for this tough job.
I've finished requesting seeds online correctly and received 2 e-mails, from 'Sage Pay' and 'SRGC Seed Exchange Request Email'.
Then I found an error on the e-mail from SRGC.
I filled all boxes in MAIN DISTRIBUTION as a seed donor - 25 boxes for FIRST CHOICE and 14 boxes for SECOND.
But there are 24 names for FIRST CHOICE on the e-mail I received. SECOND is OK.
I logged in my seed exchange page again and checked my request. There are 25 seed numbers as my FIRST CHOICE correctly.
It's just a quick report. Now I'm looking forward to receiving the seeds from you :)
-
Hello Tatsuo - I wonder if you changed or added a number at the last moment and did not click "update" ? That may be the answer.
-
The password for 2015 will be in the July Secretary’s pages and on the printed seed list
As a e-member I don't have these. Where can I find the password?
-
The Secretary's pages are always online for all members - as was mentioned previously and in the Seed notes. The password is in the July Secretary's Pages, sent to all members who receive their journals by post - the Sec. Pages are online HERE (http://files.srgc.net/journals/SRGCSec_Pages_web.pdf) for e-subscription members and those who have lost the relevant paperwork - hint - page six !
There is also a hyperlink to the document from the notice in the Seed Ex. main page.
The Secretary's pages are always to be found on both the Local Groups page and on the Journals page of the main website ,as well as from the forum Notice Board area : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12685.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12685.0)

Hello Jonna,
if you log into your e-sub member's page the password is actually given there , along with your membership number etc.
-
Maggi,
i've been waiting for the validation email and checked my spam folder but nothing found. Is there an issue with the smtp server?
Received, the server is certainly busy
-
Order done successfully :). For once I succeeded with not problem, perhaps because I now have electronic membership. Earlier my last name had been a problem, and Maggi has had to help me, but now I managed all by myself. :) It will be exciting to wait for January and to see what seeds I get.
-
Hello Tatsuo - I wonder if you changed or added a number at the last moment and did not click ? That may be the answer.
Thank you for quick reply as usual, Maggi :)
Perhaps my English is not good and you cannot get what I say exactly.
I received an automatic return e-mail from SRGC with 24 plant names as my FIRST CHOICE when I fixed my order finally. I think my order has been finished and paid yet.
Then, I logged out from seed exchange page and cleaned the cookies and temporally internet files from my PC, then logged in my seed page again.
All 25 boxes of my FIRST CHOICE are still filled now. If I forgot to click "update" as you pointed out, I might find an empty box with 24 boxes filled with code numbers there?
-
Dear Tatsuo, I do not know. Some minor hitch. I expect the seed team will choose you 25 items as best they can.
-

Well done Leena - it really is very simple!

Yes, things are very busy !
-
Thank you Maggi, you are right, it was in an earlier post. Sorry for bothering you, still suffering some Chemo Mist.
-
Dear Jonna, I am just pleased you are feeling well enough to order seeds! Keep well!
-
Some points of note when using the Seed Exchange online system
It is most important to note that a new registration MUST be made each year - old log in details will not work. (Your details are not kept online from year to year)
Please do not pay before making an online request. You must order first then pay.
Only use the direct route to payment if you are paying for a request sent by post.
Surplus Seed applications must be made and paid for at the same time as making your initial allocation request.
-
Another few points:
Please read and understand the instructions first. We have gone to a great deal of trouble to make things as foolproof as possible, but this only works if the instructions are read before the clicking begins. They are on every page of the seed exchange site at every step in the process.
For example, if members are trying to pay before they order their seed this can only mean they are not reading the instructions.
Please do not overwhelm Maggi or other members of the seed team with requests for support as a first resort.
The system is working really well, over 60 members have already ordered and paid for their seed since it opened this afternoon.
-
It really simple to choose and order seeds, again it's great job ;)
-
All done, now off to bed

I'm still debating whether to order or not. I've got so many pots waiting to be pricked off and plants waiting to be planted out :-\ I've been marking seeds in the SRG and AGS paper seed lists. I know if I go on to the electronic ones I am lost.
-

Same here, I have dozens of pots with seedlings which need repotting next year + my own seeds to sow ... I made the promise to myself not to order seeds this year, but browsing through the seedlist makes my fingers itch to order some ...
-
OK, some of you might think the current SeedEx pages are fine, but, to be honest, they get more and more confusing each year. Refining them down to what one needs to do and know to order and making the task of simply placing an order more straight foreward (as to say on a single webpage for this task ONLY!) would be of a great help. Frankly, I do not have the time to read through a couple of pages to finally find the required link. It is extremely frustrating. Please, someone reconsider this for the next SeedEx.
While we are on it, I have long lost my membership card, thus the number, and reregistering each season is another item that the website should 'remember'.
cheers,
Jamie V.

Years ago I learned my lesson. If you have an address book on your computer and have societies entered with contact info it's a fine spot to enter your membership number for retrieval.

The SRGC does not keep any members details for any postal members online. And if you knew the number of people who forget their login details from one one month to another and who change their email addresses etc and do not update their details you would know why it is the choice of SRGC to have the re-register each year system. New online payment provider regulations have made it important to get everyone to enter their own details too .
Believe me, nothing would give the Web Team and Seed Team more pleasure than to be able to have one page where all the details are and for that to be only a couple of lines. But again, with the capacity of some people to forget their numbers etc and try to log in with old details and so on that is quite impossible. The reason for the info to be repeated in in different places is a result of messages complaining that people cannot find the main page. That seems pretty straightforward a task to me but it seems not , so we try to help by spreading the info around in the hope that these people will stumble onto some of it!
I do notice from other seed exchanges where the initial instructions are quite brief that once one accesses the system there are a great many instructions there too :-X
The Seed exchange ordering is on a different server to protect the membership listing there - I am told that this is desirable and who am I to argue with that? Many people are extremely anxious about the security of their data online and the SRGC takes that seriously and acts accordingly.
Of course, we have to make a system that works for the majority of people in the easiest way - and for the Seed Team too. And it does.
It is not possible to make a system for a club like this, run on little money by volunteers, which will provide a personal service tailored to each individual and I believe it is unreasonable to expect that we would. I do however, think we do a jolly good job and thousands of satisfied members each year does rather support that.
Thank you for your opinion Jamie, it will, as ever, be noted and considered when the future of the Seed Exchange is discussed.
-
ordered online - very impressive - thanks

I admitted to my OH tonight that half the plants in the list I have no idea what they look like - it always amazes me what people grow
-
Since the system went live yesterday 120 members have successfully ordered and paid for their seed. It's astonishing how easy it is when you bother to read the instructions.
-
Fred,
the reason the system works is because of the volunteers like you and Maggi!
I would still be waiting for the activation e-mail if Maggi hadn't "found" it for me.
So thanks again for all your hard work,
cheers
fermi
PS the email did eventually turn up this morning!
-
Fermi, there are issues with some email providers. Overly aggressive spam filters for example. Most members have no issues of course, if they did running this seed exchange online would not be possible.
There is a particular problem with Microsoft free or “throw away” email accounts such as hotmail, rocketmail, live etc
When registering the issue with these email providers is clearly highlighted – still some just try use them anyway. Do they think we are lying to them? Perhaps they think they know better? If that's the only email they have, then sorry, get another one. Knowingly passing their problems on to already overworked volunteers is just not acceptable.
If they have a problem with their own computer or provider then THEY must fix it. The SRGC seed team is not there for members' home computer support.
Every year Maggi has to deal with endless inane questions, very often the same issues from the same people year after year who perhaps just cannot be bothered making a note so that next year they can help themselves.
Yes, sometimes people genuinely do need help and this help is happily given. Most times however we find that people have just not bothered to read the instructions.
As of this morning 135 members have now successfully completed their orders online.
-
The email providers who delete the activation emails do work for those receiving such emails from large online companies - yes - but those companies have, I am given to understand, paid dearly for that privilege - not an option open to the likes of SRGC.
Also, people using work computers should know that their systems will either delete entirely or block for clearance emails with live links in them - so again, it is not something over which the SRGC has any control.
What might help is if customers of the problem email providers spoke to them to complain of the problem !
Fermi found that his email did eventually turn up - but the fact is it was sent at once by the system - and the "failure" was not of our making. The fact that we respond to the cries of anguish to "rescue" people an added bonus for members.
-
Just ordered and some surplus which I wasn't going to. I didn't mean to order anything but as I was about to put the paper list on the fire I had a change of heart. Of course the envelope with my membership number on it was already burning so a frantic hunt for the number. It is on the envelope the journal comes in. Not sure about e-members. Thanks everyone. Susan
-
E-members can find their membership numbers and the password for initial entry, on their online subscription profile pages. :)
Other current members missing their numbers can contact the Seed Team on seed@srgc.org.uk
Perhaps the exercise of some patience by members would be helpful! It will be forced upon some of you - my email service has crashed!
-
Hi , I found the ordering of seeds very easy after following the instructions , my not registering first was a slight hiccup but then on a roll even though this was at 4 am here in Tasmania only some 3 hours after the list went live . Used Mozilla Firefox and another 2 orders on behalf two of my member friends using G-mail and activation links came through immediately. Thanks to all involved in the Seed Exchange process.
-
Members will be aware that it is a small team of individuals who volunteer behind the scenes of the Seed Ex to make it available and provide an amazing range of seed for FREE! (You're contribution only covers the cost of postage etc.)
Having used the online ordering system myself, it's quite straightforward and easy to use if you follow the instructions given. This involves a lot of work, so if you find you're having problems do check the notes again in case you've missed something before you seek help. If seeking help I'm sure we're all reasonable in our requests, courteous and patient.
In my experience, even if you're not first-past-the post to get your request in you will still receive an excellent selection of seeds, including many of your first choices without any of the cost of buying them from commercial sources.
HUGE THANKS to the Web Team and others involved with the Seed Ex, we really value the work you all do!
-
You're right Matt, preparing the Seed System does require a lot of work and it is necessary to follow the steps in the right order - that done the process is both simple and , dare I say it, rather fun!
It is not the volume of people having trouble which is overwhelming, it is the attitude of some. Quite shocking to me in a Club like this. It is wonderful to have the enthusiastic support of many members.
-
Well done to you all on another smooth and easy seed ex from the user end. We're like swans - the users gliding thought he system and the web team frenetically paddling away behind the scenes to make it work.
Hope to finish my seed packeting to get them back in the post by the weekend.
All over the country there are SRGC members beavering over boxes of seed to be packeted ready to be sent all around the world - it's all such a huge system, with so many volunteers involved.
I always think it's a dangerous time of year - some seed is bound to be spilled and if a drink is then spilled on the rug - will the seed packeters end up with a green carpet? ::) ;D
-
It is not the volume of people having trouble which is overwhelming, it is the attitude of some.
Lucky then that I am not handling their requests.
-
Maggi. I alway wonder what happens to the seed I drop through the floor boards. Maybe one day I will have a tree growing in the dinning room. Certainly would if I ever sort Budlea seed.
-
After a small delay in not noticing the upper and lower case in the seed ex password I too found it very easy to order and very user friendly.
Thanks to all those involved in the team for making this all possible.
Best wishes to all, John.
-
The seed exchange is great and I have much gratitude for it. :)
I am glad that the online system is easy for folks to use.
Unfortunately, I can get nowhere with the system. Everything I do, just to get started, is invalid!
This does not surprise me at all, I generally do much better with a human than a machine. I will mail in my seed request. Maybe there is another way to pay online without using the seed exchange system? I find renewing and paying for my membership online to be very easy.
My preference would have been to use the online ordering system. I understand that this make the process easier for those doing the seed exchange. Maybe someday computers will be something I understand, but do not hold your breath, I have many other things that I like to do, than try to understand computers.
-
Robert
the most likely reason for your 'invalid' error at the payment stage is that you have entered the state name in full the USA system/authority requires that only the two letter code for the state - use that and you should be good.
-
Ian,
Thank you for the help!
Unfortunately, I can not even get into the online seed exchange system. I suspect that what is invalid is my email address. In the past year my email address has changed. I thought that it had been undated, however maybe the old one is still hanging around somewhere. When I try to retrieve my password (I forgot) the system says that my email is invalid. I have tried to re-register too with the same invalid response.
For me this is frustrating as I can not be proactive and solve the problem myself. I do not know what is wanted by the computer system or maybe I could never fix the situation. I just do not know. Maybe I will try some more. I feel like a hacker! :P
-
Robert - there is no call for you to use your email address to make access the seed system. I will message you!
-
Maggi,
God Bless You! :)
It turns out that there was a password problem. Once that was solved I easily got into the seed exchange system. I ended up placing my seed request online. This was extremely easy. Payment was easy too.
Once I was able to access the system it worked perfectly and was extremely easy to use! :) The person that worked out the system did a great job as it was easy for me to use even though I am easily frustrated by computers.
A job well done by everyone! Clearly I am very pleased! :)
-
And I am equally delighted that you have been able to make your seed request Robert! :) :) :) :-*
-
It may be worth posting a "quick guide" to the Seed Exchange , in case it might help folks
The main Seed Exchange page on the website- http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) give some information then leads you to the next step .....
From this page link - http://www.seedexchange.org.uk/index.php?page=ordering&func=order (http://www.seedexchange.org.uk/index.php?page=ordering&func=order) - enter the website password to begin registration ..... ( the password is in the paper seedlist which should have arrived with most members now- if not see here http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12685.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12685.0) to find the Secretary's Pages. Online s e-subscription members can find in on their profile page ) ...... that will take you to a new page, where you will be asked to fill in ALL your address details paying attention to follow the requirements ( - especially only entering CO not Colorado, for USA members, for instance), then you click the "Register" button at the end of the page and click the link in the activation email that will be sent to you (this confirms that you have entered the correct email address)
Bear in mind that we warn that the use of certain email addresses will not deliver the activation email. (The activation emails are sent immediately by our system but, of course, we have no control over how long they take to get to you! Most do arrive in moments but we have heard of some taking half an hour or so to arrive.)
Then you will go back to this page http://www.seedexchange.org.uk/index.php?page=ordering&func=order (http://www.seedexchange.org.uk/index.php?page=ordering&func=order) where you will then Log In with your membership number and the personal password you will choose when registering to make your seed request.
ONLY pay via the first "Pay" link if you are paying for an order sent by post.
If you order online you will only pay when you have fully completed your request, including Surplus Seed - the system will calculate your cost and when you have paid the system will send your requested list through to the Seed Team .
-
Ack! Unfortunately I'm going to be one of those people who have to bug Maggie for help in getting into the system.
I can't seem to register. Last night I didn't have my member number. This was kindly and quickly sent to me from Neil. Today when I try to register I get the following response "The memberhsip number or family name you provided is invalid or you may already be registered." If I'm already registered I have no idea how it happened. My family name certainly hasn't changed. I did have an address change from last year, however. My email address is a gmail one so that shouldn't be the problem. I have thoroughly read the instructions.
So great and powerful Maggie could you somehow fix it so I can do my order online? I do at least have the paper seed list for consolation. I'll eat a few more Walker's Shortbreads to help the Scottish economy while I wait.
ETA: I've checked my spam folder too.
Thank you,
Jan Jeddeloh

I must confess that I shall probably never learn to love the electronic seed exchange system, but the seedlist is awesome and the people behind the whole show are incredible - including Maggie.
-
Ditto! Frames at capacity but already highlighted dozens (a hundred plus, even) in the SRGC list. Must... not... log.. on...
Well I placed an order after all, and I managed to stick to my basic allocation with no surplus! Some interesting seed donations this year. The system was a breeze, so thanks again to the web team as well as all the seed donors.
-
Oh Matt ;D I am still holding out.
-
Oh Matt ;D I am still holding out.
You have until 15 Jan to place your order, Roma. That's a long time to hold your nerve! ;D
-
Dear all,
I am not able to order seeds! I keep receiving the error message
The email address or membership number you supplied is invalid.

Dear all,
I am not able to order seeds! I keep receiving the error message
The email address or membership number you supplied is invalid.
But this is not the case really, both my subscription and my email are correct!

Corrado, You must register and activate a seed account before you can order. Please read the notes carefully, I am sure you will find it simple when you follow the notes.
-
Dear Maggie,
I have already registered indeed when if I try to register again, it says I have already registered ....
I will wait a while and try it all over again.
Regards
Corrado
-
Wwhen you have registered once the account must then be activated - you cannot register again.
I see you have registered now - and activated your account - so now you Log In to make your seed request. I have just tested it - it works!

A reminder that Seed request for the SRGC Seed Exchange must reach the Seed Request Manager, Neil McNulty, by the deadline of 15 January.
Read more : http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange)
If you have been ordering online, please be sure you have fully completed your request and gone though to pay - otherwise your request will not have reached the Seed Team.
Costs for Seed Requests made online must be paid for via the online ordering process- LOG IN to order to enter to find your request listing and complete.
-
All you seedy people will be pleased to know that the seed exchange was set up today in Castle Douglas, with 13 volunteers moving tables, trays and boxes into place, then making sure that all the seed was set out in the correct order. The new helpers were trained this afternoon in the fine details needed when seed picking. Tomorrow will be our first full day of picking orders. I would include a photo, but I left my camera at home!
-
Well done Folks! Hope the weather stays reasonable to aid your efforts - dry days to go back and forth are much more cheering.
Have you got a big enough stock of tea and cake to get you through the task? I hope so!
Here's hoping we get them all done and dusted well in the end!
All the best,
Maggi

Just to remind you all that the deadline for the Seed Team to receive your seed requests is tomorrow - 15th January.
Also a reminder that you are asked NOT to enquire after the whereabouts of your seed until AFTER 15th February.
N. B.
It is clearly stated in the SRGC seedlist paper notes and online that the distribution will not begin until January. Donors will have their requests attended to first, followed in turn by other requests for main allocations. Surplus seed request will not be picked until all main allocations have been filled.
To quote from the printed seedlist :
Distribution of seed starts in January, first for donors’ main requests, then for non-donors’, and finally for surplus seed applications.
Main requests will be sent out in January, but surplus requests will be processed only after all main orders have been fulfilled. Main and surplus requests will therefore arrive some time apart.
US members must send all their necessary paperwork with the request form (see centrefold page i) unless this was sent with your seed donation.
and the online pages :
SEED DISTRIBUTION: EARLY 2016
The South-West Scotland Group will manage the distribution again in 2015-16. Full details of the arrangements for ordering seed will be included in the seed list and on the website. Seed requests must reach the Seed Request Manager, Neil McNulty, by the deadline of 15 January. The seed distribution will begin in early January and all main requests will be sent out by late January.
Donors’ seed requests are completed first, then non-donors in order of their arrival date followed by surplus seed requests. This means that main and surplus requests are sent out separately and may arrive a few weeks apart. The whole distribution should be completed by the end of January.
Please allow for delays in the postal system before enquiring about the whereabouts of your seed.
Please wait until after 15th February; after when queries should be addressed to Neil McNulty.
Contact details are in the web pages of course.
After all the terrible weather and flooding there has been all over the UK recently it is wonderful that the Seed Team have succeeded today in getting the seed picking equipment set up, ready to begin that process.
They are better employed in the next few weeks concentrating on picking and sending seeds rather than checking up for orders yet to be made or en route to members. :)
-
Before the deadline arrives - I suggest that those of you who ordered online return to your seed page to ensure that you have fully completed and paid for your requests. Every year there are some members who have forgotten to complete the process!
If all has gone though to completion you will see a summary below your seed request which looks like this :
Member Number: 100999
First Name: Cecil
Surname: Hislop
Address 1: 267 Acacia Drive
Address 2: Banbury
City: Rockville
County: Angus
Country: United Kingdom
Post Code: DD34 6 HG
Order Cost: £25
Order Stage: 2
SRGC Order Reference: seed1009991448963324
SagePay Transaction Code: 1976082255
It is the order stage 2 you are looking for if you made your full order online.

My seeds have arrived this morning, all but 2 of my first choice and they were 'makeweights'! Thank you to all the teams involved at all stages. As a donor, packeter and (sometime) helper with the distribution, I know the amount of effort that goes into it. Particular thanks to those of you who take responsibility for the various stages - an altogether more onerous task than just being a 'helper'.
-
My seed order arrived this morning, I did really well, I recieved most of my first choices and a few second choices. I have put a big bag of seed compost in the greenhouse to warm up in readiness for the weekend. Many thanks to Carolyn and the team for a great job.
-
Not bad going for those Seedy Folks - they only starting picking the orders to send out on Saturday !
-
Arrived safely here too and I was most amused to receive back a packet of seed that I had packeted myself. I thought - that hand looks a lot like my own writing, and it was! :D
-
They are like grease lightening Maggi, the surplus will be here as well before we know it ;D. what are the odds on that happening Matt?
-
Well, I had asked for it, but then forgot ;)
-
:D, that's better.
-
They are like grease lightening Maggi, the surplus will be here as well before we know it.
We should be able to complete the main orders tomorrow and make a start on the surplus seed.
I must emphasise the need for patience while you wait for the post to deliver your packet. Last year, in one batch of orders, one recipient in New Zealand received his order long before another in Ireland (and you can almost see Ireland from where we are here!). Please do not enquire about your order until mid February - we have other things to do first.
And yes, Maggi, there are cakes. Lots!
Here's a picture of today's orders leaving, with helpers (from L to R) Carolyn McNab, Carolyn McHale, David McHale, Liz Faulkner.
-
Crikey- when you see the bags like that it makes to realise just how fast you folks are working! Well done!
Carolyn is correct, of course , there is no point in asking about the whereabouts of seed until after 15th February because it just slows down the Seed Team from their important work of getting the seed out to members.
Once the packets are in the post it is in the laps of the postal gods to get them to you! I think we all know how inconsistent the various postal services of all our countries can be!
-
Ours arrived already yesterday and Trish is busy sowing them right now. Thank you so much to everyone involved. Checking the numbers after the seeds arrived I was again astonished at the sheer size of the list and cannot imagine the work entailed.
-
My order just arrived very happy and thank you again to the team for all your hard work :) looking forward to trying some new ones to me this year!
-
My seed arrived in Lincolnshire this morning, wonderful work by the seed team, many thanks to you all.
-
Got my seed today including hopefully Melanie's Wonderful Lilium grayi.
-
One of these years I'll get time to read the list and put a request in for us!
-
One of these years I'll get time to read the list and put a request in for us!
Really....maybe you should take a day off for that next year, Maggi ;D...it is a wonderfull list :)
But if you're really lacking in things to sow...I'll remember ;D :P
-
Mine arrived in freezing cold Essex this afternoon. I got all but four I asked for - I am very pleased. Thanks to the seed team for all their work. It was also a pleasure donating some of my cyclamen seed this year.
-
Update - the main orders are all in the post (except a few US orders awaiting permits) and we have made a start on the surplus seeds. The first surplus seed orders are in the post already. We have all been working very hard. I will be glad to see my garden in daylight again when it's all finished!
-
Mine arrived today, some mouthwatering stuff in there. Thanks so much to all you donors out there, and of course the whole seed exchange team who make this wonderful thing possible.
Tristan
-
Package was on the side when I got home tonight - brightened up my day.
Thank you donors and the whole seed exchange team who made my day. :)
-
Three pictures from this week.
Picture One - Threave Garden is looking lovely in the snow as we work. This is the view from our window and this morning we spotted a red squirrel scampering past. Picture Two shows seed pickers concentrating hard as they get on with their job. Picture Three - David, our systems manager, is in charge of the brilliant new label printer, franking machine, and the List Generator for the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
-
Received mine today, many thanks to all people helping for the hard work involved!
-
Seeds received, mostly first choice, thanks.
-
For those who want to check their seed packet numbers against the seedlsit, please be sure to use the relevant , current, seedlist to do that - it is is on the main seed page http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/seed-exchange) where it says
To browse/download the SRGC Seedlist No. 69 Seedlist pdf ..... and is also added to the archived list of seedlists further down that page.
For your convenience you may also download it by CLICKING HERE (http://files.srgc.net/seedexchange/SRGCseedlist69.pdf)

Received mine today, :) My thanks to the seed team.
-
My seed came today too. Many thanks to all involved. :)
-
Seeds arrived today and almost all first choices.
My thanks to all the Seed Team for their excellent work as well as to donors.
-
That's good, Ashley - I know sometime mail to Southern Ireland takes ages to arrive.
-
In fairness, last year was the only time there was a delay.
Because this coincided with a change-over in the distribution team I was probably too quick to inquire, while they were still busy getting the surplus seed out.
-
I was speaking from personal experience of things taking 3 to 4 weeks to get to or from the Republic :(
Glad to hear it's not a regular thing!
-
My surplus order has arrived already, the team are doing a great job ;D
-
The last sacks of surplus seeds went off to the post office today - all that remains to be posted are the orders which include the "easy 10" and some US orders awaiting documentation. The "easy 10" orders will be posted very soon.
We are taking the weekend off, and doing stocktaking on Monday. Many thanks to everyone who has helped to make the seed exchange possible, it's a huge amount of work, all done by a large number of volunteers from all over the UK, but when the job is shared, it becomes manageable.
photo: Andy McNab and Carolyn McHale smile with relief as the last orders are posted!
-
My seeds arrived yesterday, many thanks to the distribution team
for the excellent work.
-
Thank you very much!!!!! I have received my seeds today. I am very happy :)
-
Seed package arrived in my rural box in central Ontario, Canada at noon today....just under 5 days! Thank you team...you did a great job! And, I too, am very happy.
-
The seeds reached my door this morning in good condition :) Thank you for the seed team :-*
-
I've finally found time to catalogue my seeds and always like to add provenance details where available. I have received from the exchange "1057 Crocus laevigatus ex JJA347.241" but can't find it on the Archibold Master list and a Google search doesn't help either.
There is a JJA347.421 listed:
347.421 : CROCUS LAEVIGATUS Greece, Crete, Mt. Vouvala. Ex an A. Edwards coll..
Has there been a simple typo error transposing the '2' and '4'? Or does a JJA 347.241 really exist and does anyone know anything about it?
Many thanks!
-
One of the queries I answered from a member during the Seed Ex. was about the ex Archibald Crocus in the list - I cannot find it meantime - but I did find photos of them .... gimme a minute!
-
347.421 : CROCUS LAEVIGATUS Greece, Crete, Mt. Vouvala. Ex an A. Edwards coll. (An exquisitely tiny (though not quite so small as an Omalos coll. we grow) white flowered form, sometimes with fine maroon-black feathering outside.)
I think this may have been re-identified later as being C. pumilis. Photos in the Archibald pages.
347.241 is not listed at all - I believe it is a typo/inversion of the number.
-
Thanks for that Maggi :-*
I suspected a typo and will update my catalogue. I have one form of C. pumilis so good to add another.
-
Thank you very much to the volunteers and donors.
My first eighteen months of trying to grow plants has taught me one hundred and one ways to lose seedlings so to receive all these seeds is great, thank you.
Kind regards
Nick

From the Seed Team: 69th SEED DISTRIBUTION 2015-16
This is now closed and all but a few seed requests needing paperwork have been posted. Please allow for the postal system to deliver your order – no queries before 15 February.
A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who sent in seed; without your contributions there would be no seed to distribute to all our members at home and abroad.
THANK YOU too to:
Ian and Carole Bainbridge of the Seed Reception team and their postman for surviving the first year of receiving your many seed donations and producing the longlist that is the seed catalogue.
Ian Pryde and the Packeting Team, Ian’s last year in this role, for translating the thousands of little envelopes into numbered glassine seed packets.
Neil McNulty, Seed Treasurer, for offering again to be submerged beneath a sea of requests and who puzzles over the payments and chases the permits.
SW Scotland RGG for providing the team who handle the final distribution, picking all the seed packets for each request, from routine main orders to those fiddly surplus blocks of numbers.
And last but not least the Web Team, promptly handling each enquiry.
Carolyn McNab (Seed Distribution Manager)

Dear all,
Thanks for the amazing work, I have received my two bags of seeds!
I am wondering whether it would be possible to have the seed exchange list in spreadsheet or table format , it is much easier than having to work through the pdf file, and copy names and codes one by one (I keep sort of a database) .... also, it makes it very easy to print out labels.
Regards
Corrado
-
That is something that is being considered - but since it is possible to extract the file from the pdf via copy and paste into an text file and then import it to an excel file ..... it is already possible for those wishing to do so to achieve that.
-
My main seeds arrived also today, thank you for the team and all donators. :)
-
SRGC Seedex seed have arrived in the Southern Hemisphere!
My only gripe is that I don't think I saved a copy of my order so I don't know how many first choices I got! It doesn't really matter because they are all desirable seed and I'm so glad to have received them! I even got some of Tatsuo's narcissus seed! ;D
Thanks once again for all the hard work done by all the volunteers who make the system run so smoothly. I personally have to thank Maggi, because each year I've had a problem logging on either because I was elsewhere overseas or because the system was not recognising how my name and my partner's were recorded. ::)
cheers

A copy of your seed request is sent through with confirmation of an online payment on completion of the process.
Of course, those using email addresses like hotmail, which routinely destroy automated mails ( Think how folk would howl if the Postman walking up to their door did that! Customers of those providers should be complaining to them) or using work email systems which may also exclude automated emails, may not receive them.
-
I got Paeonia saueri seeds from the seed exchange :). These were wild collected seeds and it would be interesting to hear where they were collected?

Details of some collection sites may be available on request from Ian and Carole Bainbridge at seed@srgc.org.uk

Thanks Maggi and Matt. I thought it would be good to know for example how high the seeds were collected. It will be interesting to grow this new species, I'm so happy I got those seeds.
-
I got both my lots of seed this week and I want to thank all the people involved with the seed exchange, so so so please. what a wonderful job you all do
-
Seeds arrived today. Thanks to all the people involved in this wonderful Seed Exchange !

Reading these posts, member Yvain Dubois set to work and has provided the following XLSX file of the SRGC Seedlist 69.
Yvain suggests that the conversion may not be perfect, so be aware there may be minor errors, but it is most thoughtful of him to help out in this way. 8)
The file can be downloaded from this link : http://files.srgc.net/general/SeedlistSRGC69byYD.xlsx (http://files.srgc.net/general/SeedlistSRGC69byYD.xlsx)

Just back from Canada to find a mountain of post, including my SRGC and AGS seeds. Will open tomorrow after a good night's sleep.
By the way, is it possible to cross the pond eastbound without losing a night's sleep?
-
By the way, is it possible to cross the pond eastbound without losing a night's sleep?
Yes, sleep on the plane the entire trip
-
Easier said than done, Rimmer!
-
A bit rough was it Ralph?
-
Just long and boring. Can't understand people who say they like air travel. Just slept for 12 hours solid.
-
I've done it myself to the states, it's a long old flight.
-
Mailman just dropped a padded envelope with seeds in my mail box.
Thank you everyone involved with this project, volunteers as well as those who generously donated seeds.
It was posted on the 18th and took exactly 2 weeks to get here. Not bad!

My wife and I arrived at our Sacramento bungalow yesterday. There was our seed package from the seed exchange safe and sound. :)
Thank you everyone for all your efforts. Everyone's participation is greatly appreciated and goes beyond the package of seeds. The package certainly gave me cheer when I was feeling pounded down and depressed. Thank you everyone. :)
-
Received my seeds in Colorado on Feb. 15 - postmark shows it was posted from Castle Douglas Jan. 18. I called the USDA inspection station in Seattle several times to inquire over the past two weeks, they were never able to find record of my package, but pointed out they had "bags" of seeds to process, many of which were SRGC origin. They said live plants get first priority at the station, and seeds get done when they have time...
One month to receive the seeds! Too late now to do outdoors cold stratification especially with our unseasonably warm spell stretching as far as the forecasts care to go. Sigh, I will have to wait until next winter to plant the species requiring stratification, I have demonstrated a propensity to kill everything with refrigerator stratification techniques!

I'm aware of seed that were received in Sweden yesterday - postmarked from Scotland on 17th January. Sadly, there is nothing we can do about the vagaries of the various postal services around the world. We are in their hands. :-X
-
I received mine in Minnesota on Feb 6. I chose the Jamaica, NY office.
It's such a treat to get seeds from around the world! Thank you to EVERYONE involved!

Yesterday I received seeds from Spain posted on Dec 14th! :o
I think the pidgeon must've walked the last few kilometres ;D
