Title: Acis/Leucojum 2015
Post by: fermi de Sousa on February 23, 2015, 06:31:44 AM
A bit earlier than last year we are now getting a good number of flower spikes on Acis autumnalis (was Leucojum autumnale).
I visited a friend in Kyneton who has seed forming already on some of hers which flowered earlier,
cheers

That's a nice clump-ful Fermi.

I can't believe it's autumn again already, how quickly it comes around again, which means spring is not far off for us!  ;D

Here is leucojum Vernum, the spring snowflake in my front garden. Situated underneath a viburnum x bodnantense Dawn it is starting to clump up nicely.

With so many flowers by stem, it should be aestivum.

It's aestivum, thanks Karaba I always thought that flowered later on in the year not this early. If it flowers this early why call it summer snowflake? I'll have to see if I can find some Vernum bulbs now.

John, here is the picture of my L.aestivum.  :) It flowers here in the end of May. it is a tall plant with rather small flowers, L.vernum has bigger flowers  considering the height of the plant. L.vernum is just now beginning to flower in my garden, though usually it flowers in the mid April, but this year everything is early.

Leucojum Aestivum in full bloom in the garden, a bit early for a plant called 'Aestivum'.  They are planted at the base of a wall facing South, which may help to speed up flowering.  Trouble free plant for me in the garden.

Fermi,

Acis tingitana - looks nice! Is it a xeric species, the bulbs enjoying a dry summer rest?

Hi Robert,
This clump is in a bed which is not watered over summer when the bulbs are dormant, but I know that others, like Otto in the Dandenongs, can grow it where it isn't kept completely dry as their gardens can get some summer rainfall.
My friend Cathy even gets seed on hers ;)

Hi David,
I like these plants that look after themselves and just need a bit of thinning out once in awhile,
cheers

Fermi,

Thank you. I appreciate the information. It looks like a attractive species, something to keep my eyes open for.

Leucojum aestivum is flowering in gardens near us just now, which would make it mid January in the UK.

Big difference in flowering time to here, in a pot. First flowers at end of July. Seed capsules now all shed, and the first sown fresh now has leaves 3-4 cms tall.
One of my favourite small bulbs.
