Title: March 29th 2014 Hexham Show
Post by: Peter Maguire on February 10, 2014, 11:03:07 AM
Having received my shows handbook, I realise that it is still showing that entries are to be submitted to Alan Newton. That was intended to be a temporary measure for last year as I may have been away until a few days before the show. This year I do not have that problem, so entries can be sent directly to me (contact details as listed under show secretary). My apologies for not picking this up in the proof-reading stage

However if you do send your entries to Alan, I'm sure that I will receive them anyway.

Also one further error that slipped through unnoticed is that the SRGC show schedules are still showing that the Ione Hecker Memorial prize is to be awarded for the best pan of Primulaceae. This is an AGS travelling award that was awarded at Hexham last year, but it won't be awarded there this year! Instead, we have the Roger Smith Cup as this year's AGS travelling award, and it will be awarded to the winner of class 103 (6 pans of rock plants raised from seed by the exhibitor)

I will make a correction to the Ione Hecker note in the online version of the Show Schedules, Peter, as I have already done for the reception of entries, as well as mentioning this in the Website Show area.

Perhaps some greater attention to proof-reading in future would be beneficial?   ??? ::)

Guilty as charged!  :-[
At least concerning the entries  ;)

Whilst I am discussing the show, it's probably worth mentioning for exhibitors that we used to be provided with car park passes for the exhibitors and nurserymen for the large car park next to the show hall. Unfortunately due to changes in ownership/administration of the leisure centre, they are no longer able to offer this concession to us. Fortunately it was only £2.00 for the whole day last year (I haven't been along to the venue recently).

Next SRGC Show is  The Northumberland Show at HEXHAM.    TOMORROW!!

March 29        12 noon to 4.00 pm

NORTHUMBERLAND SHOW SRGC/AGS , The Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham, NE46 3PN.  (A69 roundabout, turn towards Hexham; straight on; show is next to Waitrose supermarket on left after Station Road) Joint Rock Committee will meet at this show.

See here  (http://files.srgc.net/show_info/ShowSchedules2014.pdf)for Show Schedules.
N. B. There are some errors in the printed version of the Show Schedule so please check carefully.

Exhibitors should note that SRGC Show Notes and Regulations apply this year, and
AGS next year. Accordingly a Forrest medal may be awarded this year.

Members of both AGS & SRGC are eligible for all prizes, medals and other awards. Points count towards Seasonal Aggregates and Merit Medals according to membership.
The Ione Hecker award  will not be competed for at this show - instead,  the Roger Smith Cup, an AGS travelling award,  will be awarded to the winner of class 103 (6 pans of rock plants raised from seed by the exhibitor) ( not as given in printed schedule)
Bulbous plants: includes corms and tubers but NOT rhizomes and Orchidaceae

My goodness, it's nearly 7pm on  Thursday evening - what's the betting that there are folks all over the place beavering away to get plants ready for the Hexham Show this Saturday?  Hope they've got better weather than here or the exhibits will risk being frozen  :-X

No plants to take to Hexham Maggi but going all the same. I have heard so much about this show that I thought I better go and see it for myself.  ;)

You'll love it, Angela - it's a lovely show- Carol and John Marriott are going too, I'm sure you know- you'll see Christine Boulby there, of course - and do you remember Alan and Brenda Newton from their visit to our show ? And there are lots  more folk you'll know from  our show and the SRGC Discussion Weekends, too. Hope there's a good turnout of Scots going down.
Travel safely and have a wonderful time  :) :-*

Thanks Maggi, looking forward to see all the lovely plants that I wish I could grow. Hopefully there will be a few of us Scots there. Graham Catlow kindly offered to take me from his house in Edinburgh but I had already made alternative plans. What lovely kind folks we have in our club.
Will be past to see your garden soon, I bet it's looking lovely at this time of year. See you soon  :-*

Just that shortia makes me wish we lived in a cooler climate Chris - what a lovely plant. Who is going to update Alfred Evans' book on the peat garden? (Or should I call it the 'sustainable peat garden'). I love reading this whilst at the same time being unable to grow virtually all of the plants he mentions as well as they deserve, if at all. David Sampson used to grow these plants very well down in the south, so with care...

a very fine show indeed ably organised by the local group. Cyril's Forrest was for his Trillium which was part of a very good three pan which won class 2-it also included the Pulsatilla that won the Forrest at Kincardine last Saturday. Don Peace took the RB Cooke Plate for most points in the Open Section as well as the Roger Smith Trophy for 6 pans from seed - many of his fine entries  were bulbs. I was fortunate enough to get a medal for the large 6 pan while Jim Watson took the medal for the small 6 pan.

And I stand corrected Stan.  I thought the trillium was the best plant but people were talking to me and the medal sheet was behind so I thought it must have been awarded to the plant behind the sheet. Mea Culpa.  They were all cracking plants anyway... Gobsmacking...

The Sandhoe Cup for the best plant in a 19cm pot went to George Young for a Fritillaria tubiformis. Ian Kidman took the EG Watson trophy for a rare or difficult plant. In a good Section 2 Tony Stanley won the Gordon Harrison Cup for most first points, Norman  Davies received an SRGC bronze medal. Elizabeth Dodd won the Cyril Barnes Trophy for most first points in section 3. Merit certificates went to Cyril for his Tecophilaea violacea, Fred & Pat Bundy for their Trillium chloropetalum and Peter Hood for Primula Aire Mist .

A well deserved gold award  went to the local group for a most informative display  on plant hunters- good quality displays  often  feature at  shows in this area and Mala James get the credit for leading the work.

Mala accepted   the award on behalf of the group from SRGC President Carole Bainbridge. Elspeth, Struan and John   mounted a typically floriferous stand from  RBGE which also received an award. No doubt others will have  some close ups of the many fine  plants.

Thanks for a wonderful series of pictures Stan, you have really given a great sense of the range of plants on view (just under 600) and the people pictures show a lot of smiling faces, so I guess everyone enjoyed themselves.

I'd like to thank all the local group (and some not-so-local) members who helped out on the day and my my job that much easier, and indeed pleasurable, and made for another succesful show.

As show secretary, you don't get much chance to take photographs at the show, but I had been impressed by David Boyd's winning entry for the cut flower class - mostly Hepaticas which he grows so well. The cut flowers in vases (actually 'shot' glasses from IKEA in our case) don't often get seen in detail in show report photos. Whilst we were tidying up. David came along to clean out the glasses, and as the flowers would have just been thrown away, I asked whether I could take them away to photograph later. Here are the results:

Little gems in those cut flowers, Peter, thanks for the close up "shots" !!   I would think only David Boyd would have plants big enough to allow the cutting on so many Hepatica blooms!

Stan, you have, as ever, done a great service to us all by showing such an extensive range of photos to really bring the atmosphere of the show into our homes.
I am very grateful to you for this contribution.

The display from the RBGE looks super in its finished state.
I must mention the display of the plant hunters - what a well thought out and accomplished display that looks. A huge amount of info contained there - what a lot of effort to achieve that - a  superb exhibit.  8)

There will be many looking forward to next year's Hexham show - but of course those nice NE folks will be welcoming exhibitors and visitors alike to Ponteland on   11th October  ;)

Just looking through the photographs and realised that the white Primula in Christine's photo (reply 9) was in fact Primula 'Aire Waves' shown by Peter Hood for which he received a certificate of merit. He told me later it had looked far better last week at East Lancs and by the end of the afternoon was looking a little 'tired' - as were we all!

That corner of the benches was a little congested and I can see how the confusion over whose plant each was could arise - will try to do better next year.  ::)

Peter
Thanks for the clarification on Air Waves.  I just didn't get the name.  You'd chuckle but I just couldn't see over the top of the pot to see behind the Trillium which is part of the reason for my mistake but also someone was talking to me so I wasn't concentrating.  Not your fault at all it was a super day and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Well done!

Seems I am very late in posting, clocks change, more time outside, less time on the net. Much repetition I am sure
Class 1, six pan from Stan de Prato which included
Rhododendron 'Pintail' and
Andromeda polifolia 'Nikko'...I think someone needs to tell Stan that he could improve in the label department, does take a little effort but makes the presentation so much better
Primula 'Aire Mist' Pater Hood (3)
Primula irregularis hybrid, Ian Kidman (4)

Class 2 was a three pan class dominated by Cyril Lafong that also included the Forrest Winning
Trillium rivale 'Purple Heart' plus the following that could just as easily have taken the award
Pulsatilla vernalis
Dionysia aretiodes 'Compact Form'
Hepatica 'Millstream Merlin from David Boyd (15), one of many on the benches
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' from Ian Kidman (16), must have been keeping in back somewhere

You could be forgiven if you thought that it needed to be white to win in class 5, 1 pan Primulaceae excluding Androsace and Dionysia but Sam Sutherland proved them all wrong with
Primula Mary Berry
Don Peace, who had the most points in the Open Section had kept his
Primula Netta Dennis in good condition from the previous week

Corydalis solida 'White Knight' Don Peace (51)

Cassiope lycopodiodes 'Jim Lever' in 92 from Tim Lever
Arcterica nana from Alan Furness (32)
Synthyris pinnatifida lanuginose in  37 from Carole and Ian Bainbridge, used to grow this plant, always liked it but found it difficult to say the least

Two Glasgow stalwarts both won their classes with

What a great selection of plants, George.  I have seen elsewhere in the Forum that Rudi's Lewisia tweedyi are flowering in Germany - and they're out in Northumberland too - which seems early to me but I think I'm getting more confused with each season.  Wasn't really expecting the Paraquilegia yet, either.
Must look back at previous year's show pix to see if it's just a trick of my memory.  :-\

Maggi in this part of Northumberland you can see that Jim Watson who lives half a mile from me has his Lewisia in full flower, mine are just starting to show bud at the very base. Similarly my Paraquilegia are really just nice and green now, some way from a flower I think.
I have a few more pictures that I can put up
Notes from Alan Newtons Orisitrophe rupifragra for those who are interested as I see the earlier notes had a few views
Hepatica japonica 'Ryougetsu' from Brian and Shelagh Smethurst (29)
Fritillaria tubiformis won me the Sandhoe Trophy as best plant in a 19cm pan and finally as there is space my small
Saxifraga columnaris in the seed classes (106)

Great show and so nice meeting up with so many folks. Thanks for posting the pictures everyone. Some of those plants were to die for. I came back and looked in my greenhouse and just feel depressed.
Well, done Cyril.
Came home with some replacement plants, my last purchase of Townsedia, if this one dies it's no more. I hovered over the Japanese hepaticas for ages, thought they might complement my Japanese koi. Maybe next time.
