SRGC/AGS NORTHUMBERLAND SHOW:  HEXHAM    13 th April  12.00 noon to 4.00 pm
VENUE:
Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham, Northumberland

AGS Rules apply this year - good luck to all exhibitors hunting a Farrer medal!!  ;)

Show Secretary, Peter Maguire and I know of at least one new SRGC exhibitor planning to make his first show entries tomorrow  and such news of new exhibitors is always exciting.
Good luck to you, Steve!! 8) :)

An irritating problem has just emerged with my car so I will not get down to Hexham. Many of the plants were already boxed up and I was contemplating an entry in the large six pots class. With luck some may last until Perth next weekend. Have a good show - I look forward to the pictures on the Forum in due course.

My goodness, Stan,  how irritating for you of course but the loss of such a good entry to the Hexham Show Team will be equally keenly felt by them.
I remember only too well the worry as a Show Secretary that such a problem would befall one of our major exhibitors. :-X

Here's hoping that Hexham's loss is Perth's gain.  Surely the weather will  not be so good during the coming days as to push many of those plant over the edge....... :-\
Maybe you'll need to hire a trailer to take all your goodies to Perth ? Julia would be tickled pink!

Worth keeping the rhods in top condition. There is a special trophy for them and not usually many entries, looks as if the judges will have to do some work  ;)

as a married man I refute any suggestions of tickling show secretaries - its probably against  the show regulations as well.

Long time lurker but my first post (which I thought, eventually, would be about cyclamen, but there you go). Maggi and Peter, thanks for the encouragement!  :) The cyclamen reference will give you a clue about the few plants I'll be taking...

What a great show it was folks.  I'll download pics tomorrow, but the tables were groaning at the weight of plants on them.  it was announced we had altogether 814 plants exhibited!  Such a show it was.... too tired to do much more right now.

Just had a cheery phone-call from a noisy supper party in Ponteland  ;D
Mr and Mrs Newton are holding court over some fine casserole and Mississippi mud pie - with side orders of Trifle - boy, do those folk know how to celebrate a good show !
The Wyllie Wifie is there, I could hear her from nearly 300 miles away!

Seems the Hexham show went very well, with over 800 plants on the benches.
Cyril Lafong won the Farrer medal with a Tecophilaea ..... I'm assuming T. cycanocrocus

David Boyd, fresh from his Forrest medal at Edinburgh last weekend, won most points in Section I -and is very grateful to all the help with his plants that the faithful Northumberland Show supporters Angie and Trevor Jones gave him. Nice folks those Joneses!
Mrs Boyd, the clever Kim, is getting credit for the choices for David's cut flower entry -  a class he's never tried before - who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?? ;) ;D ;D ;D

Congrats to  Peter and all the Hexham Show Gang for another great show  8)

Glad to hear you are home safely Christine. Sleep tight!

Just got back from the Hexham show and it was wonderful.
The table displays leave you in awe of how some people manage to grow their plants.
I finally managed to get hold of the booklet that went with the SRGC seed list, and spent a happy ten minutes leafing through the packets. Calceolaria falklandica seed is now at home with me .
My favourites plants on the show table were Cymbidium goeringii and Townsendia hookeri. Now I just need to find out where I can get them .
After years of waiting I managed to find a plant of Philesia magellanica on the stall from Timpany .
Overall a very enjoyable day.

Ay up, Mick! I live in a village south of Huddersfield (Shelley), not far from Holmfirth, although originally I'm a Ponte lad. I see you're in Hemsworth - my Dad's from Upton, grandparents from South Elmsall!

Really impressed with the number of plants on the benches today and the quality was stunning. And I did OK for a first-timer. 8)

I visited the Hexam show with Cyril where we saw over 800 entries WOW never seen so many great plants and despite there being 8 or 10 contenders for the Farrer medal guess who won yes or good friend Cyril. We had a great day and I even managed to ge two red tickets the 3 pans unde 19 cm had 16 entries only managed a third amongst that lot but every entry was worth a first. I am posting my selection of pictures, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

I can well believe it. Good to be able to enjoy the evening's entertainment and travel back today, though- better for you.
We had a terrible night and morning of rain here- I trust it wasn't too bad for you driving home? It's lovely here now - bright, windy and sunny and mild, too.

The season has been such that we thought there might be a particularly good display, with plants rushing to make up for lost time!

Visitors to the Show must have been pleased with the wealth of fine plants on show.
Hope the nursery folks did well too - hard season for them, especially with the show cancellations that must have hit them very hard indeed.

Steve is being a little coy when he said he did 'OK' for a first-timer. He won the Northumberland Cup (for someone who has not exhibited and won a first prize at an AGS or SRGC national show before), the Cyril Barnes Trophy (for most first prize points in the novice section, and a certificate of merit for the fine Cyclamen persicum shown below with the proud owner.

Of course, as I pointed out to him,  now he has some trophies, he'll have to continue exhibiting, if only to bring the trophies back next year.  ;D

Thought I would stick in my usual assortment of pictures seeing as its my local show and what a fine show it was with a wide range of alpines in all shapes and sizes on view. I was one on the judges and we seemed to go on forever as the classes were so big and so many plants in individual class were of such a high standard that there was a lot of discussion before the red sticker was awarded....never mind it was all worth it to get lunch supplied by Brenda Newton and her great bunch of helpers.
To the pictures, in the main as they came out by class, but there will be a few odd misses to come at the end as there were many visitors to the show and I do not like to interrupt their viewing by hovering in front of the class taking pics.
Class 1 overall view by David Boyd, of which one was
Hepatica nobilis
Ornithogalum sibthorpii from Don Peace (think his wife must be a hairdresser to get the foliage right)
Pulsatilla vernalis from Cyril Lafong, is one of my favourite alpines as it always takes me back to holidays in the Swiss Alps
Tecophilaea cyanocrocus, the Farrer Medal plant, again by Cyril, another fantastic specimen...lost mine in the winter of 2010 but coming from seed now...will never get anywhere near this standard.

Moving on down the line through the primula classes the tables were groaning under the weight and size of the plants but I only photographed one
Primula 'Wharfedale Village' shown by John and Clare Dower in class 3, as to get one to this size if a sterling effort as far as I am concerned as it is too prone to the dreaded fungus for my liking
A much admired pan, winning the Best Primulacaea for the show was
Douglasia laevigata shown by Frank and Barbara Hoyle (class4), was runner up to the Farrer as well
Class 8 for Androsace and Douglasia had
Androsace muscoidea from Lionel Clarkson and
Douglasia vitaliana ssp assoana from Brian Burrow. He had told me he had a good one coming on at last weeks show, it must have been good as Brian doesn't do larhe pans unless they are very good....I thought it was too as I never find it too easy to flower well
There was a single entry in 13, 1 pan compositae from Tom Green
Townsendia hookeri

Again there were many Corydalis on show but I only took one
Corydalis solida ssp incise from Ian Leslie (14)
In class 16 we had another Farrer Medal contender with a huge
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' from Mark Childerhouse but
Saxifraga desoulavyii from Ian Leslie particularly caught my eye as being different. Exhibiting the Saxifraga classes it is becoming a 'a must have' one of the Coolocks or other such hybrids to have any chance of getting a first as judges favour these over more mundane cultivars such as Saxifraga grisebachii or porophylla...purely for example...even when very well grown, I suppose the same can be said in Primula classes where P. Broadwell Milkmaid is a must.
A Scottish visitor, I am pleased to say there were many, viz. Jean Wylie had
Shortia galacifolia x uniflora 'Brian Wilson' (31) and while on with shortia
Shortia uniflora 'Grandiflora' was shown by Brian Russ in class 86

It is not often that we get interesting viola on the show bench but this year we had 4 distinct viola on display so all 4 in sequence
Viola beckwithii v beckwithii in class 25, Ian Kidman
Viola trinervata (25) George Young
Viola brevistipulata var hidakana (29) Barry Winter)
Viola alpina (102) Keith and Rachel Lever (and won the Eric Watson trophy as a result)

Androsace vandellii have been few on the bench this year, my own will probably be ok by next weekend but Cyril Lafong had a nice one in 82
Tim Lever had three nice ones in 81that caught the eye so I show all three
Androsace ciliata
Androsace yargongensis
Androsace sp aff lehmanniana
Tim also had in 91
Polygala chamaebuxus

You make a good point there, George - we seldom see any of these violas on the show benches in Scotland either - a great pity, since they are such attractive wee plants.

I attended the above on Saturday and  was so pleased I made the effort. It was a great show with loads of eyecatching plants on display and more importantly lots of lovely things to buy.

Being an orchid  nut I was delighted to see a pot full of Cymbidium goeringii, but now the bad news. My camera was at home and the picture taken on my phone is awful. I must have been shaking with excitement.
Did anyone get a good picture they would be willing to share?

I was also impressed with various pots of Townsendia hookeri. Another to add to the wish list.

Continuing my trundle through the classes, mostly small open now
Narcissus calcicola from Ian Leslie (80 I think)...while judging this class we had a good chat about the more chunky hybrids that were on the bench but Ians plant hit the spot.
Now a few Fritillaria
Fritillaria aurea x pinardii from Don Peace in 78 and I was much attracted to
Fritillaria hakkarensis shown by Derek Pickard in 105, even though it was only a single stem
Fritillaria tubiformis (108) from George Young is one of my favourites, especially in this more dwarf form (looks even better today after 2 days of 15C temperatures (so do I come to that)

C. goeringii is often  shown by Wilma and Jim Wright - some super photos on he AGS site . Such as :

I said earlier that I had opted out of taking too many pictures of P.allionii and cultivars but there were some nice Asiatic ones so
Primula irregularis from Alan Newton (56)...I bet he sleeps well tonight after a hectic week
Primula bracteata from Peter Hood (56)
Primula gracilipes minor from Tom Green (56)
Primula irregularis seedling from Jim Watson (56).....all of these exhibitors are local group members so a fair bit of banter went on...I have to say our group has a fair number of folk who exhibit at shows, never a bad thing
Primula 'Netta Dennis' from Don Peace in 6, as good a one as I have seen this year

Down to  a mix of classes and plants now so
Saxifraga lilacina from Tommy Anderson (70)
Saxifraga 'Leonardo da Vinci' from Mark Childerhouse (69), is one I will look out for, a really nice looking plant with potential me-thinks
Townsendia spathulata 'Cotton Ball' F & B Hoyle (51), I think also received a Certificate of Merit
Adonis vernalis from Tommy Anderson (68)
Anemone caucasica from George Young (68), had held up well from the week earlier because of the cold weather

Last two
Draba polytricha from John Bunn in class 65 and
Draba ossetica from Dave Riley in the same class...as I have mentioned in other posts the Draba seem to have had a bad winter so its good some of the old c/vs are still ongoing.
That's the final post on the Hexham show, sadly I committed the cardinal photographer sin of not having enough battery life in the camera...I did check, it said it was full but it was not so ran out...never mind I think I got most of what I had noticed from my browsing round the show. I was very lucky to have a son help me stage my plants and load then back into the car at the end, sadly it did for his back carrying my bigger pots so been having to tie his shoe laces just like when he was little...did offer to go over his back with some manipulation but he didn't want a vet touching him (wish he would say the same about my whisky)
In summary this was a really fine show given the type of spring we have had, exhibitors came from far and wide with cracking good plants as Don Peace would say and it looked as if the Nursery folk did a good trade. Poor Susan Tindall (Timpany) had to endure an Irish sea crossing in a very strong wind/gale and very rough seas, she says that she was not sea sick when a great many were and was jolly glad she was not a worker on the boat cleaning up after it docked!!!

Get the drift, at my age it doesn't make any difference when it comes to size!, so lets concentrate on plants...I reiterate as a shower who still hankers of 'alpine' and how it chimes in the mind, a good little un works for me!!!, nuff said (never mind Maggie, she has to be feeding Ian at the moment you would think?)

Androsace vandellii - Alan has been bringing this to shows for a good long time now, and I am really glad he does.  It shows how its growing over time.  Wish I'd taken its photo every time I've seen it.  I think its specacular!

Cymbidium goeringii - such a strange and interesting flower, the photo just doesn't do it justice.  I wonder if our official photographer will do better?
Dionysia Harlekin - this particular dionysia makes me want to try growing them again.  Last one I bought was dead within a week of purchase....
Glanthus virescens - shown by Ian Christie.  Wonderful specimen....
Hepatica nobilis - just one of many shown by David Boyd at this show.  His interest in cyclamen may have faded, but its been overtaken by his interest in hepaticas....
John's amazing mini garden.  I just love to look at this every year....

Kelseya uniflora - won the Bainbridges a 1st....
Narcissus Betty May - Jean didn't win with this pot, but I don't know why.  It was chock full of these delightful flowers
Narcissus obesseus - One of Anne Wright's this time, and a lovely pot full too...
Pulsatilla vernalis - sorry i didn't get the name of the exhibitor for either one of these two specimens.  One in section 2 the other in the open section.  Both looked stunning...

Pulsatilla patens var nuttalliana shown by Lionel Clarkson - was looking super - I'm a real sucker for Ranunculaceae folks
Saxifraga dinnikii - A little beauty shown by the Smethursts...
Saxifraga Leonardo da Vinci - sorry didn't get exhibitor - I'm with you George, this plant is lovely.... must get it....
Shortia - this one shown by the Bainbridges for colour foliage and was a huge pot full, deserved and obtained a 1st
Shortia - this one shown by Jean Wylie and also won a first
