Post by: Maggi Young on April 01, 2013, 05:50:56 PM
It occurs to me that new readers here may not be aware that the Tony Goode's Crocus Pages are also available on the SRGC site :  http://www.srgc.org.uk/genera/index.php?log=crocus (http://www.srgc.org.uk/genera/index.php?log=crocus)

I would also like  to draw your attention to "The Country of Crocus" the excellent 'blog' of İbrahim Sözen, a Turkish  Forumist  with a particular passion for Crocus   http://crocusmania.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://crocusmania.blogspot.co.uk/)

( it is not only crocus that you will see in the blog, though! ;)  )

Yes, there is a link from the main page via the Content button drop-down menu

[attachimg=1]

The Crocus Pages are  part of the archived site.

There is one other area from the Content Button that has an extra pop-out menu and that is for  the Blogs and Diaries

Crocus yaseminiae is described as a new species from Alanya province in South Anatolia. A short literature history of the closely related taxon Crocus isauricus Siehe ex Bowles (≡ Crocus biflorus subsp. isauricus (Siehe ex Bowles) Mathew) is given together with a lectotypification of its name, and a discussion of the type specimen and locus classicus. Diagnostic characters were discussed of the taxa belonging to the "isauricus group" (C. biflorus subsp. isauricus, C. roseoviolaceus, C. mersinensis, C. taseliensis, and C. karamanensis). Fenugreek scented flowers are reported for the first time for the genus.

Flower bouquet variation in four species of Crocus ser. Verni (Iridaceae)
Angelino Carta ;Guido Flamini; Pier Luigi Cioni; Luisa Pistelli; Lorenzo Peruzzi
Journal of Chemical Ecology (Impact Factor: 2.46). 12/2014;

ABSTRACT
Flowering plants employ a wide variety of signals, including scent, to attract pollinators. The aim of this work was to examine whether flower volatile compounds in four closely related Crocus species are linked to species divergence and to the current knowledge on their pollination syndromes. Fragrances of freshly opened flowers in Crocus etruscus, C. ilvensis, C. neglectus, and C. vernus, all belonging to ser. Verni, were analyzed using GC/MS analysis. The results are congruent with the knowledge about systematic relationships among taxa and the four species fall into two main fragrance types, based on the identity of their volatile compounds. In C. etruscus, C. ilvensis, and C. neglectus oxygenated monoterpenes (lilac aldehyde B and A) are the most represented, while C. vernus has a fragrance rich in monoterpene hydrocarbons (α-pinene and limonene). Our results point towards outcrossing mating strategies for C. etruscus, C. ilvensis, and C. neglectus, whose volatile compounds are known as pollinator attractants. This is congruent with their flower architecture, showing a style of variable height, often overtopping stamens. On the contrary, a self-pollination strategy was repeatedly suggested in literature for C. vernus, marked by flowers with style deeply inserted within the stamens and also by a completely different flower bouquet.

A new paper is expected soon to be published in Caryologia -Firenze  - due  in April 2015 :

Seed morphology and genome size in two Tuscan Crocus (Iridaceae) endemics: C. etruscus and C. ilvensis

Authors:
Angelino Carta
Marina Moretti
Flavia Domizia Nardi
Sonja Siljak-Yakovlev
Lorenzo Peruzzi

Caryologia -Firenze- 04/2015

ABSTRACT:
Recent taxonomic investigation led to the segregation of Crocus ilvensis Peruzzi & Carta, a narrow endemic to Elba Island (Tuscan Archipelago, Central Italy), from C. etruscus Parl., endemic to continental Tuscany. The aim of this study is to produce further basic systematic data aimed comparing these taxa by means of seed morphological features and genome size. Albeit seed macro-morphology is quite identical, seed surface microstructure, seed mass, seed dimensions and genome size differ between the two studied species.

News from Janis Ruksans with  links for  important new Crocus papers  :

"For all Croconuts : Just are published excellent article from Dorte Harpke and HKEP about morphology and development of Crocus plants. Nothing so complete was seen before!
And another one - with 6 more new species - still not studied the last but you can download both on......"

http://www.zobodat.at/pdf/STAPFIA_0103_0027-0065.pdf (http://www.zobodat.at/pdf/STAPFIA_0103_0027-0065.pdf)  - The Genus Crocus (Liliiflorae, Iridaceae): Lifecycle,
Morphology, Phenotypic Characteristics, and Taxonomical Relevant Parameters.
Helmut Kerndorff, Erich Pasche & Dörte Harpke

Abstract: The genus Crocus L. was studied by the authors for more than 30 years in nature as well as in
cultivation. Since 1982 when the last review of the genus was published by Brian Mathew many new taxa
were found and work dealing with special parameters of Crocus, like the Calcium-oxalate crystals in the
corm tunics, were published. Introducing molecular-systematic analyses to the genus brought a completely
new understanding of Crocus that presents itself now far away from being small and easy-structured. This
work was initiated by the idea that a detailed study accompanied by drawings and photographs is necessary
to widen and sharpen the view for the important details of the genus. Therefore we look at the life-cycle
of the plants as well as at important morphological and phenotypical characteristics of Crocus. Especially
important to us is the explained determination of relevant taxonomical parameters which are necessary for
a mistake-free identification of the rapidly increasing numbers of discovered species and for the creation of
determination keys.
Key words: Crocus, life-cycle, morphology, phenotypic characteristics, morphometry, taxonomical relevant
parameter.

Helmut Kerndorff, Erich Pasche & Dörte Harpke
(Liliiflorae, Iridaceae) and its relatives

Abstract: Results of molecular analyses in the genus Crocus clarified several phylogenetic problems. Section
Nudiscapus presents itself now exceedingly complex and taxonomical as well as systematic corrections are
necessary. This is true e.g. for many taxa previously thought to belong to series Biflori. One group of species
turned out to be rather homogenous in respect of morphological similarities as well as geographical distribution
of their members. For these we establish a new series in the genus which is called Lyciotauri due to the fact that
its species predominantly occur in the Lycian Taurus Mountains. Genetics, geographical distribution as well as
morphological measurements are presented.

Key words: Crocus, phylogeny, new series Lyciotauri, new species Crocus akkayaensis, C. katrancensis, C.
bowlesianus, C. akdagensis, C. salurdagensis, C. xanthosus.

I wonder if when we purchase plants in the future they will come with a certificate of authenticity with DNA analysis attached. It will be the only way it will be possible to identify them as given the marginal differences will not be possible by seeing them in flower!

You are partly right. At least for mine new species I try to give good morphological differences how to separate them from similar and this is the reason why still some of my discoveries are not published yet, although they certainly are different new ones.

Crocus musagecitii -  A new Crocus L. (Iridaceae) species from SE Turkey, based on morphological and molecular data
Osman Erol, Doerte Harpke, Hasan Yıldırım
Abstract : Crocus musagecitii is described as a new species. Diagnostic morphological characters, a full description and detailed illustrations are provided on the basis of the type specimen and wild specimens. Morphologically, C. musagecitii is close to Crocus biflorus subsp. pseudonubigena. Crocus musagecitii differs from C. biflorus subsp. pseudonubigena by the lack of stripes or narrow purplish tongue on outside of outer tepals, wider tepals, and homogenously yellow anthers. In order to clarify the phylogenetic position of this species within the Crocus adamii species complex, we sequenced the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS: ITS1 + 5.8SrDNA + ITS2) and 5’ external transcribed spacer (ETS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). A phylogenetic tree obtained by Bayesian phylogenetic inference is given. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the new taxon is close to C. munzurensis. Crocus musagecitii differs from its phylogenetically closest relative C. munzurensis by the corm tunics (C. musagecitii: coriaceus; C. munzurensis: membranous), the number of leaves (C. musagecitii: up to 8; C. munzurensis: up to 4) and non-hairy leaf margins.

Two new crocuses just recently were published. One by Turkish botanists as C. ancyrensis subsp. guneri - from Amasya prov - published in Phytotaxa.

I got my plants of Crocus guneri from Czech collector under name of C. ancyrensis as collected in Amasya province without exact locality and up to last I was quite doubtful about their status, supposing them as natural hybrid. Some forms of C. ancyrensis s.l. occasionally hybridize in wild (such hybrid with C. abantensis got name C. x paulineae). Another hybrid with unknown species was collected S of Tokat, too. My own gathering from N of Amasya province (LST-124 - near Merzifon on Tavsan Dag) has uniformly yellow flowers. So it is not great wonder that I regarded my samples as natural hybrids, although they were fertile. My plants has something finer reticulated tunics than pictured in description of C. guneri, but difference is not very great and it can vary slightly between different populations.

Although my experience in cultivation of Crocus guneri isn’t very long, it turned easy growable in pots. In cultivation corms increase in size up to 20 mm in diameter and well multiplies by splitting. I am keeping it all the year round in the greenhouse.

Another one is Crocus novicii - published in Phytotaxa by D. Harpke and Serbian botanists from S Albania. I never had it, so attached picture is scan from original publication where you can compare it with allies.

This highly ornamental crocus still is unknown in cultivation but it most likely has same requirements as Crocus jablanicensis and C. cvijicii growing wild in same region and in similar conditions, so there could be no problems with its cultivation in our gardens. It is quite possible that it could be found on the same mountain ridge in adjacent Greece, as its type locality is situated quite close and ecological conditions there are very similar. Superficially it is quite similar to C. jablanicensis from which it can be easy separated by bluish toned flower tube and blue basal blotch on segments outside, it is more leafy, too. From light (whitish) forms of typical C. cvijicii and C. veluchensis it is easy separable by glabrous throat which in both other species is pubescent and by white colour of stigma which in others is yellow or orange.

Abstract
A new Crocus species (Iridaceae) for southern Albania, Crocus novicii sp. nov. (Iridaceae), is described and illustrated. We here provide diagnostic morphological characteristics, results of molecular analyses, detailed descriptions and illustrations of this new species and compare it with its relatives C. jablanicensis, C. cvijicii and C. veluchensis. Our molecular analysis is based on two chloroplast (matK–trnK, rps16–trnQ) and three nuclear markers (nrETS, nrITS, TOPO6B exon3–exon6) and includes representatives of all related species (C. cvijicii, C. dalmaticus, C. jablanicensis, C. rujanensis, C. sieberi subsp. atticus, and C. veluchensis). Morphologically, C. novicii can be distinguished from its relatives by its white flower with lilac coloring at the base of the perigone and its higher number of leaves (> 3). Although it is morphologically close to C. jablanicensis, molecular analysis has revealed a close affiliation to C. veluchensis. Crocus novicii is diploid with 2n = 20 chromosomes. The new species is named after the Serbian botanist Novica Ranđelović to honor his important work on the genus Crocus on the Balkan Peninsula.

Abstract
Recent phylogenetic investigations on the genus Crocus proved several infra-generic units predominantly within section Nudiscapus to be para- or polyphyletic even at infra-specific level. In particular, the 23 “subspecies” of C. biflorus Mill. turned out to be polyphyletic grouping in very different phylogenetic clades and sub-groups. In addition, they were established under the binomial Crocus biflorus, not yet typified. As first step, we neotypified this name. Then, through a phylogeny based on the ETS region of the nuclear ribosomal (nr) DNA as an additional nuclear marker to the already available nrITS region, we further demonstrated that all the “subspecies” represent independent evolutionary lineages. Therefore, all these taxa are treated here at species level. To achieve this, 10 new combinations are proposed.

3) Phylogenetic tree from a Bayesian analysis of the ITS and ETS regions of Crocus sect. Nudiscapus species. Numbers at nodes give posterior probabilities (pp) for the clades. Position of C. biflorus is highlighted in red. Former C. biflorus subspecies are indicated in bold, while species not classified within C. ser. Biflori are in grey. Individuals with intra-individual polymorphic ETS and ITS regions are indicated by ‘E’ followed by a letter and ‘I’ followed by a letter, respectively.
