Hepatica transsilvanica 'Blumenstadt Erfurt' is the first Hepatica that flowers in our garden.
-
Beautful!
-
Thank you Marc, it would be more beautiful if there was more sunshine, one flower suffers already from all the rain.
-
great to see your hepatica flowering. Hope spring will bring many more hepatica flowers from other gardeners too

Thank you Kris, but at the moment it is real winter here in Belgium. Everything is covered with snow!

Some Hepaticas in the greenhouse start to flower.
Hepatica nobilis 'Little Abingthon' has a very dark blue similar to 'Maria Theresia'.

Carsten, great Hepatica's! Here the weather is still on the dark side. The Hepatica's are waiting for some more sun.

Thank you, Herman!
The japonicas started, too. A mix of colours of today...

Flower shape is so perfect in this one! Also dark blue one is wonderful.
You have a whole range of colours in H.japonica, thank you for showing them. :)
-
A beautiful start for the Hepatica season Carsten!
I suppose all these beauties are pot grown? The ground is still solidly frozen here.
-
In 2017 I made a cross from H. nobilis 'Bavarian Blue' and a filled form of the Severin series that still produced some fertile pollen.
Yesterday and in it's F2 generation the first filled form with the spotted appearance of 'Bavarian Blue' showed up.

It is still very wet but the temperatures are rising! So the Hepaticas begin to wake up.
Hepatica nobilis 'Cremar'
Hepatica transsilvanica 'Loddon Blue'
Hepatica transsilvanica 'Winterfreude'
Hepatica x media 'Avatar'

Hepatica transsilvanica 'Elison Spence' starts to flower. The flower will still change in getting older.

Hello Everybody!
Great success Carsten!
A few pictures from my collection.

Great success Carsten!
A few pictures from my collection.
Patrick, nice collection! All japonica, I presume except the last one (pubescens).
Here it is still bad weather, a lot of rain, so the Hepaticas in the garden are not flowering well.
-
Superb Patrick!
-
Patrick & Carsten,
Outstanding! Beautiful flowers, expertly grown & photographed!

Beautiful Hepaticas from all!
Nice to see the H. americana flowering at your place Herman.
Due to unusual waves of warm weather (intermixed with cold ones) I recorded the first flowers on H. americana seedlings (in container) and
Hepatica japonica (in the ground). Like every spring the squirrels are producing much damage when digging holes in search of nuts and uprooting especially the smaller plants.
The day these seedlings bloom it was 19C!!!
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
It seems there will be more flowers on H. transsilvanica this year, but for now 'sensitive' places in my garden need to be covered with mesh :(
[attachimg=5]
-
Gabriela, nice to see that you already have Hepatica in flower! Here it is always still under 15°C, but the rain has stopped.
Hepatica nobilis var. pyrenaica 'Alba'
Hepatica seedling from 2015. It is a pity that snails also do like them a lot.
-
Hepatica nobilis Multipetala Group, is easy to seed, this are seedlings from 2018.
Hepatica nobilis plena Gotland, very good grower.
Hepatica henryi does not flower well this year.
-
Thank you Hermann. I can agree that Flora Plena Gotland grows well.
Here a few more in flower at this time.

A bit more

@ Patrick, great collection of japonica! Thanks for showing.
@ Arthur, very nice findings. You are lucky that you can see them in the wild. Many thanks.
Here it is raining again! >:( Probably for the whole week!
-
Herman, for Hepatica cooler temperatures are better for the flowers :)
We only had one day with 19C, very unusual. By Sunday it was winter again.

Carsten,
Your replys #5 & 7 were very beautiful! some of the seed you sent me are sprouted after winter dormancy. Thank you again for your generosity.
-
I d'like to show you a beautiful Hepatica nobilis found in Gothland (Sweden).
It reminds me on a rose or camelia.

It is perfect, so beautiful! :)

Skyline Strain
This is a plant that has light and dark flowers at the same time. Next year it will be different again. At the bottom right is the blue line that led to the name Skyline.

Also Pünktchen belongs to the Skyline Strain

Timos Minizwerg, very small, abundant blooms here for the first time in years

With a blue line, unfortunately only a few flowers are drawn like this.

Arthur, great Hepatica’s. Thanks for showing. It seems that slugs have also found your Hepatica's! This year they are here a real pest. >:(
-
I think, caterpillars have been there, but I don`t know it exactly...
-

Even if I'm not after doubles, this one is very sweet! The pastel rose color makes it look so delicate.

Herman: the H. americana ex. Spring Dawn doesn't look like its mother unfortunately. I understand that sometime the flowers can change a bit in the second year?
All my H. americana seedlings, regardless of color have very small flowers in the first/second year.

This is a very beautiful strain, I love the colour and how there are different shades at the same time. :)

Hepatica 15005 05, seedling from 2015, flower is dark blue when it gets open and changes after some time. Also very special leaf, probably crenatiloba blood.
-
Special Leaf is always good!
The H.n. created here by itself. Skyrose, there isn't much else and the variety is not yet certain.
[attachimg=1]

A few japonicas, from Carsten, outdoor trial, I put a lot of effort into the planting places.
[attach=1]
[attach=2]
A H.nob. without stamens, from C.
[attach=3]
Found years ago, Samira, actually more purple.
[attach=4]

Random seedlings from the field, but certainly many special ones. I want to plant them out, otherwise they'll drown me again over the winter...

Arthur, Skyrose is very beautiful! The flower seems to me more pyrenaica or americana. How are the leaves?
-
I don't know, I don't observe it in detail.
But there is no H. pyrenaica here that I know of....

Arthur, this Hepatica is that one from wild origin from Germany?
In the flower: anther, filament and connective are more yellow, that is typical for pyrenaica and americana.
-
Many years ago I found Skyline and her Children in the wild, 30 Minutes away.
In my garden they mixed with the existing ones, mostly foundlings, and have since then produced many different children.
But there is no precisely traceable origin.

Arthur, you are living in a very special place! :)

Yes, that's true.
But I have to walk almost 10 minutes to get to the Cypripedium calceolus!
Today with the grandchildren in the forest, 15 minutes by car.
2 different natural locations, they are all still there.
But not the last one... :'( ;)

Maybe it is worth to see the leaves, maybe there are some nice surprises there too.

First to flower is this H.japonica. It is really beautiful.

H.pubescens is struggling after the winter, but alive and in bud.

Time flies and particularly so in the spring, when many plants start flowering at once.
With the sudden warm up Hepatica acutiloba started to flower in a few locations; in my garden I have them on more shaded spots and the buds
are just about to open.
A few beauties from the woods.

I don't think I posted my H. transsilvanica, which started to open in the first week of March! (a record here) and the last image was taken last week.
These are my oldest plants from seeds and it is the first time they flower well. I have younger ones (younger meaning 5 years :) and they still produce fewer flowers even if I fertilized them last summer. I think H. transsilvanica being rhizomatous, follows the same pattern like other species with rhizomes (Podophyllums, Jeffersonia and so on..), first they need to bulk up their root system before flowering well. At least that's my theory...
The most beautiful Hepatica for my eyes and soul :)
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
-
I agree a very strong colour, most pleasing on the eye.
-
One of each: H. japonica, H. nobilis white and blue and H. americana 'Purplelicious' (the darkest H. americana form).

Beautiful Hepatica’s Gabriela, especially the dark blue americana.
We were with a small group 3 days in Germany to see some botanical gardens.
We also visit the plant market in Kiekeberg. There were a lot of people and a lot of plants. Also many Hepaticas by name, but they have already finished flowering. My Hepatica collection has grown a bit. :)
-
Herman, you must have had a really good time. :)
Beautiful Hepaticas, Gabriela. Here they are just only starting to flower.
Hepatica transsilvanica
[attachimg=1]
Hepatica japonica 'Hakurin' and in the background 'Shirayuki', which has become so big. It grows in the highest spot in that bed, and clearly likes it place. I don't dare divide it when it is growing so well now.

Leena, it was indeed a very pleasant trip! Today here I already harvest seeds in the alpine house! Outside it is cold and wet!
It is nice to see that japonica is growing so well in your garden!

Leena
Do the white hepaticas set seed?
-
Gabriella,
Magnificent blooms! I especially like the deep blue in the first post of the series.
-
Hi Everyone
nice hepaticas. our hepatica season is just starting. Yesterday I saw some just starting to flower by internet correspondence. We are still in India and hopefully some will be flowering when I return back.
Gabriela your dark Americana" purpilicious"(did you name it)is lovely. Did you distribute the seed before. If not and if you are going to sell some I want to have some. Such a dark , lovely colour.
-
Leena
Do the white hepaticas set seed?
No, they are double and sterile. :(
-

Thank you Herman. I am sure you had a wonderful time and how can one abstain from having more Hepaticas? :)
The 'dark blue americana' is actually purple, reason why I call it 'Purplelicious'. I know there was a discussion at some point about the Hepatica colors, and while blue is very common for H. americana - in various shades, purple is more rare.
-
Beautiful Hepaticas, Gabriela. Here they are just only starting to flower.
Very nice to have the Hepatica season starting Leena! Do not touch the large H. japonica (except to take pictures :), it looks perfect where it is!
-
Hi Kris, I suppose you cannot wait to be reunited with your summer garden.
Yes, I had it as H. americana - deep purple, then I name it because it is very distinct. I will try to take out a small division for you.
The color is a bit too intense, it was at the start of flowering and I took it with my cell phone. As the flower age, it fades a bit, like with all other H. americana colors. This taken two days ago with the camera.
[attachimg=1]
What I'm saying about color, can be easily noticed with H. nobilis 'Walter' -deeper pink at the beginning, then fading a bit.
The multipetals are doing well, just that the chipmunks got into cutting the flowers right after opening so I had to put them under a mesh.
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
-
Der Walter ist besonders schön. Und selten.
Diese Zufallssämlinge will ich die Tage auspflanzen, es ist grad schön nass und kalt - brrrrr.....
[attachimg=1]
-
I should also prick out some three year old seedlings and move to separate bed, but it is also here too cold right now. :)
For some reason I have many seedlings germinating this year, and I'm most pleased about seedlings sown from plants I got from Carsten last year. Of course they were open pollinated because they were already finished flowering when they got here, but it will be so interesting to see how they are like when they flower in a few years time.:)
Gabriela,
really nice, and I especially like your multipetals, but the dark americana is great too. I like the dark anthers in H.japonica. :)
-
Thank you Gabriela.
-
Gabriela, the pink multipetale are very beautiful! My multipetale seedlings are all blue.
-
Gabriela, the pink multipetale are very beautiful! My multipetale seedlings are all blue.
I also show it last year Herman, a chance seedling (actually a few, all similar) from the seeds that also gave the blue multipetala plants.
And I called it Hepatica nobilis 'Walter'. I don't know how seedlings from it will look. Working on it :)
The Hepatica season is coming to an end because of the warm weather. Only on more shaded locations there are few flowers.
From last week, a truly blue Hepatica americana and a multipetal Hepatica americana 'Preciosa' (my naming).
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
-
Gabriela, I love that multipetal flower! I have similar from your seeds, it is only now opening, but it has flowered already in couple of years.
Snow and very cold nights are finally over, though temperatures may dip below zero during nights but days are warm and sunny.
Everything is happening very fast now. Corydalises are in full flower, as are most Hepaticas.
These next ones are flowering for the first time and were sown from Dryad seeds as multipetal nobilis. They turned out very nice. :)

Leena , great Hepatica's and a lot of flower. Here it is to wait till next year. A lot of my Hepatica's in the garden didn't flower as usual maybe because of the very wet winter and spring.
