Title: Log 29 2011
Post by: David Nicholson on July 20, 2011, 07:02:24 PM
I'm amazed to read you have no ants in your garden Ian. I think I have your share as well as my own my garden is crawling with them. I had to lift the stop cock lid covering my water meter today and the whole of the duct was crawling with ants. A kettle full of boiling water sorted them out.

I was amazed as well. I don't think I've ever owned a garden with no ants, although there are times when I wish I did. Especially when I've disturbed red ones and don't notice until it hurts :'( :'(

We've never seen an ant in this garden in all the time we've been here. seems  extraordinary, but it is so.
Mind you, there is no shortage of other crawling, flying, digging, biting chewing and chomping critters around the place so I cannot say we're short of pesky things. :-X

quite easy. Just as easy as it was to chuck the brush I was sweeping the path with a the cat who regularly c***s in my garden. And I hit it as well.

You need to get some ants Maggi. It would reduce the number of crawling, flying, digging, biting, chewing and chomping critters around the place! ;D

David can i hire you,i must have every bodies cat in the surrounding 5 miles crapping on my garden, there's even one with no tail that just stares me out while he's there, hard as nails.Berberis has been the only thing that has stopped them in that spot but then they go and choose a different spot in the garden, soon my garden is going to have that much berberis on it i will have to hang a machete at the top of the drive for people to visit.

Davey, hasn't your Other Half got a wee dog?  That's the best anti-cat device I know!

Maggie yes but he loves them we even caught him playing with a ginger tom taking turns to run around the dinning room table,he did try with the cat with no tail but got beat up(bless him)which cost us in vet bills.

They are indeed I stated in last weeks bulb log that Cyclamen purpurescens has the longest time between flowers and seed ripening, almost a full year, that I know of.

You can't have many slugs if the seed pods ripen untouched.

I'll send you as many ants as you want Maggi....all colors and sizes...but don't believe Anthony for one minute.....you can have just as many "crawling, flying, digging, biting, chewing and chomping critters " to go with them as well ;D

Looking at the pics of Hesperantha baurii - sent as Olsynium junceum I compared my plants with these photos and realized that my Sisyrinchium roseum shown by me at July 10th in 'Flowers and Foliage now' and received from the SRGC seed exchange are in fact also Hesperantha baurii.
Sorry for my mistake - the pink flowers seemed to be plausible for the Sisyrinchium.

Oh yes, in this post, Gerd.......http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7532.msg207540#msg207540

Amazing how we find things out in these round about ways, isn't it?

I didn't think the pollen on ours looked very promising and indeed, as the flowers pass there seems little sign of any seed pods fattening.  :'(    Perhaps there will a an increase in the corms instead.
