Glen Chantry Resting Bulb List June 2022
« on: June 08, 2022, 09:19:06 AM »
It's June so it must be time for snowdrops!  Wol and Sue are sending out their list very soon for Scotland, England and Wales only.

SOME GLEN CHANTRY INTRODUCTIONS AND OTHERS ON THIS LIST
Galanthus ‘Andreas Fault’ A virescent gracilis from Andy Byfield. Green striped outer segments and a darker all green inner.  This special variety prefers drier conditions.
Galanthus ‘Bumble Green’ [GC14]  A substantial elwesii with two well defined marks on the inner segments. It starts flowering well before Xmas. The variable green marked outer segments on mature bulbs add much to the plants attractiveness.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Bonus’ [GC12]  An impressive variety which when mature can have very large flowers that measure over 40mms in length.  It has distinct green lines on the tips of the outer segments and an all green inner. Called Bonus because it occurred in one of our sand plunges.
Galanthus ‘Chatterbox’  An interesting variety where the flowers unusually all face each other as if having a really good chat. Always causes comment. A North Green introduction.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Cracker’ [GC35]  A much admired seedling with well shaped flowers. The outers have a striking heavy green apical mark which bleeds slightly upwards as distinct green lines. A fetching heart shaped inner mark.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Constable’   [GC 49]   Distinctive because of its threes different shades of green. Lighter on the outers, medium on the inners and darker on the ovary.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Dame’ [GC 29]  Strong green tip to outer segments. All green inners are visible even when the flower is closed,
Galanthus ‘Chantry Dazzle’ [GC 78] A Glen Chantry seedling with a long, thin, yellow ovary. A yellow bone shaped mark covers the length of the inners and is framed by elegant outer petals.
Galanthus ‘Chameleon’ A colour change variety from Woodchippings. The inner markings change from green to yellow as it matures. Colours up better in full sun.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Diva’ [GC 61] Diva has beautiful upward flared outer petals with a bold Trym like mark. Very impressive  and distinctive especially in a group.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Dougal’[GC60]  Reminds us of the doleful facial expression of Dougal from the Magic Roundabout. The inner marks form the features and the outers the drop ears.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Duchess’ [GC 83]  Found as a seedling beside  'E.A. Bowles'  this  remarkably imposing  Ipoc has almost the size and stature of its parent. Its six segments of equal length are marked with a green crescent. Admired by all who have seen it.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Empress’ [GC 43]  Impressive in its size and shape. The outer petals lengthen to measure  in excess of 40mms on mature specimens. The flower reminds us of the shape of empress line robes that have been dipped in green.
Galanthus ‘Essex Girl’ [GC 45]  Pronounced frilliness on the edges of the outer segments and a bold green etched crescent at the tip. The inner mark has two green fangs extending from the ovary. All singing, all dancing, hence Essex Girl.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Gem’ [GC 53]  A real favourite from the garden here. Large flowers on tallish stems with two large dominant rich green marks on the outer petals and an all green inner.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Gold Cross’ [GC 58] A very  exciting seedling originally from our garden. Possibly the first snowdrop with a distinct gold cross on the inner petals. Simply stunning.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Lady’ [GC46]  Distinctive  intricate shape with the outers flaring out at the edges. It has  a bold green spear shaped mark covering half the length of the outers. H shaped inner mark. It maintain its shape for most of its flowering period.
Galanthus ‘Golden Fleece’ A simply stunning yellow tipped inverse poc bred by Joe Sharman. Needs sunshine to enchance its colour.  A mortgage is no longer needed for it to be yours!
Galanthus ‘Grakes Gold’ Initially the leaves are a lovely golden colour complimenting the golden brightness of the ovary and inner markings on the flowers. As the flower fades the leaves gradually turn green.
Galanthus  ‘Grakes Yellow’  A Valentin Wijnen introduction. A later flowering soft lemon yellow flowering variety which rapidly forms offsets here.
Galanthus ‘Green Lantern’ A late flowering, beautifully shaped variety from Altamont gardens in Ireland.  Still relatively uncommon.
Galanthus ‘Ladylike’ [GC47]  It has bold markings that are a lighter green than ‘Chantry lady’ and a more open flower shape.  It has proved easier  in cultivation with us.
Galanthus ‘Lanarth’ A substantial, very large flowered variety given to us by David Bromley.  A very rare, fabled, older variety that needs careful cultivation.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Pinstripe’ [GC44]  The clearly defined green lines on the outers remind us of a pinstriped suit. It has a matching solid green ‘tie’ on the inner segments.
Galanthus ‘Chantry Poppet’ [GC22]  A striking variety with heavy green lines on the outer segments and a variable green inner mark. Later flowering.
Galanthus  ‘Chantry Taffeta’ [GC11]  A lovely variety with heavy puckering on the substantial outer petals. The sinus mark diffuses into two blurred lines. Flowers are held on a graceful arching pedicel. Deservedly popular.
Galanthus ‘Uli’s Gift’ did not arise at Glen Chantry. It usually flowers early in the new year. The substantial significantly puckered outer segments compliment the two inner segment markings which initially are a light green transforming later to a lovely lemon yellow. A real favourite here but we are big fans of the changelings.
Galanthus ‘Wol Staines’ [GC18]  A stunning plicate seedling from South Hayes with a green blush near the ovary. The puckering is highlighted by green dots forming a crescent at the tip of the outers. The distinctive green inner mark adds much to the flowers impact. A lovely photo of  Galanthus ‘Wol Staines’ has been featured on the front over of Anne Repnow’s recently  published book on snowdrops.
Galanthus  ‘Wol’s Chubby’ [GC 59] Lives up to its name. The long claw holds the large, heavily puckered outers aside to show off the all green inners. Very much admired and coveted by all who have seen it. The naming by Sue refers to the constant battle with my waistline.

Photos will follow in due course I am told!

It is torture to read their list and not being able to order.  :( Still, thank you Brian.
I try to tell myself I have enough snowdrops and it is better to just try to grow  the existing ones well and enjoy them.
Last winter I lost my Chantry Taffeta to very deeply frozen ground. I loved it, It was one of the snowdrops I least wanted to lose. I don't think it is available anywhere in EU.

Sorry Leena and all those outside the UK  - I'm expecting photos of the Glenchantry snowdrops soon, so there will be more evidence to show more of what is being missed by "Brexit"  :'( :-\
