Volunteers needed for SRGC !!
Volunteer posts to fill:
A Minutes Secretary is needed for SRGC Council Meetings
Ann Brown has given great service to the Club with her work as Minutes Secretary over some years - Ann was meant to stand down at the last AGM but the post is still waiting to be filled.
There are not a great number of Council Meetings per year but it is, of course, important to have a reliable record of proceedings of these meetings.
If you think you could help the Club by volunteering for this post then please contact SRGC Secretary,
Carol Shaw
or David Rankin (see link below) as soon as possible.
The post of Chair of Local Group Conveners is also vacant - An Advertising Manager will also soon be needed : please get involved - your Club needs YOUR help to continue its great work.
At the AGM on 12th November 2016, our Secretary Carol Shaw will retire after many years' service. It is vital that a successor to Carol is found and in place as soon as possible.
The SRGC achieves magnificent work for its members and local groups, as well as spreading information and knowledge freely throughout the world but none of this is possible without our volunteers. the day to day business of keeping the Club in good heart relies on the good offices of the likes of our Secretary.
If you feel you could help out the Club by putting yourself forward for this position or any of the other vacant positions, please do
contact the President, David Rankin.
Thank you!

SRGC ADVERTISING MANAGER
David Nicholson has intimated his desire to retire from the position of SRGC Advertising Manager but as yet there has been no firm offer of a replacement.
Please read about the job and give some thought as to whether or not you might be able to help the Club by taking on this task.
JOB DESCRIPTION
1. To seek advertising business from those who are likely to fit the role, ethos and standards of the Club and where there is doubt to liaise with the Club’s Editor.
2. Where necessary, to produce artwork using Microsoft Publisher on behalf of advertisers who do not possess the technology and skill to produce artwork of a good standard.
3. To liaise with the Editor in respect of the space required for advertisements in each issue of The Rock Garden.
4. To prepare a plan of the proposed advertising layout for use in each issue of The Rock Garden and to submit these to the Editor and the Printers and to consult with both as is necessary.
5. To submit invoices to advertisers 4 to 6 weeks following the publication of each issue and to prepare a spreadsheet of invoices raised for the information of the Club’s Treasurer. At this point also to send a copy of The Rock Garden in which their advertisement appears to those advertisers who are not also Club members.
6. To receive cheques from advertisers paying by this method and to forward these to the Treasurer for banking. To liaise with advertisers as appropriate in respect of their chosen method of payment other than by cheque and to advise the Treasurer accordingly.
7. To keep the Club’s advertising rates under annual review, in conjunction with the Treasurer.
8. To maintain such records as are necessary to enable the holder to carry out the functions of the post and to liaise effectively with other Club officers and the Printers.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The advertising manager is an Office Bearer and is not a member of the SRGC Council and as such is not required to attend meetings of the Council.
In theory the office holder could be located anywhere in the World but it would be ideal to have at least a basic knowledge of the 'market' and of the British VAT regime. Rarely do advertisers and potential advertisers come from outside Europe in the widest sense.
Over 95% of the contacts required with advertisers and potential advertisers can be and are made via emails.
A reasonable standard of computer skills and awareness is necessary. Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word are used regularly and the necessary software is provided. The current post holder had no previous experience of Publisher prior to taking the role.

From the Dryas Booklet - July 2020 :
HIDDEN TALENTS
It is the members of our Club who make it work. The Council of Trustees is
responsible, but we don't know more than a fraction of our members. In particular,
we don't know what talents and skills you have. Some of you have retired, but could
your previous role be valuable to the Club? Others are working, and some of you
are new to the Club; you will have abilities that can also be applied.
There are often positions to fill, and council members can only ask people who they
know are relevant. Or we ask for volunteers – and most of you are far too shy or
uncertain to respond! So, we would like to know more of you and about you.
What can you do? Do you have administrative experience? Are you familiar with specific
aspects of technology, particularly computing? Maybe you have social skills and can
make people feel welcome. Or you can cook. Or write. Or edit. Or organise.
Some jobs can be done by one person, at home, quite likely anywhere in the world.
Some may involve one or a few meetings a year with a small group of other people.
Some are one-offs, others on-going. There is something to suit all tastes.
If we have some idea of who can do what, it will make it much easier to ask suitable
people if they can fill vacancies – or even start something new. At present the seed
exchange needs new people for tasks that are suitable for groups or for individuals;
people at present acting as Seed Exchange Manager and organising seed packeting need
replacements. Further, our long-serving Subscription Secretary will retire in 2021.
Whatever you can do, and like doing, we would like to know about it. Please contact
our Secretary: Hannah WILSON, Flat 3, 24 Warriston Road, Edinburgh, EH7 4HN, 07545
871304, secretary@srgc.net, and tell her about yourself. You may end up doing
something interesting, useful, and rewarding for the Club.
Ed: Hannah was very pleased that the January issue of this appeal resulted in a new
volunteer, but was astonished that only a single member felt they had any hidden
talents, and has asked me to ensure that members know they are free to contact her
(no strings attached!) to discuss ways they may be able to help their club.
VACANCIES
SUBSCRIPTION SECRETARY
Christine BOULBY retires as Subscription Secretary in 2021 and we are looking for
someone to take on this work from spring 2021. The Subscription Secretary is an
important member of the Club and on Council. They talk to many new and existing
members to ensure that their payments and membership renewals go through
smoothly. It is an interesting job needing some computer experience, but mainly a
helpful and welcoming approach with people. We have an efficient computer
system which holds the database and this is being improved and simplified to
minimise the administrative time required. The post is only open to those living
anywhere in the UK as it requires access to members' own personal information.
There will be the possibility for the work to be split in future, so members wishing
to assist but not able to afford much time can still get involved, so that the
responsibilities can be split between more than one person. To talk without any
obligation, please contact Christine BOULBY on subsec@srgc.org.uk, or the
Treasurer Richard GREEN on treasurer@srgc.net.
SEED ORDER RECEPTION MANAGER & SEED TREASURER
The task of seed order Reception Manager and Seed Treasurer is primarily to
receive seed orders by post with payments from our members. You will need to
account for the funds received and eventually deposit them in the bank. These
orders will ultimately go to our team for the next stage in the process. The task can
be done at your own pace without stress wherever you live (UK) and can be a
fulfilling and valued occupation in the cold of December and January when your
garden is mostly out of bounds. By mid-January the seed exchange closes and,
barring some follow up enquires, is the end of your involvement. If anyone is
interested in this position, please feel free to contact the current Seed Order
Reception Manager & Seed Treasurer: Neil McNULTY, 6 Main Road, Crookedholm,
Kilmarnock, KA3 6JT, 01563 526351, neil.mcnulty@uwclub.net.

URGENT: SUBSCRIPTION SECRETARY VACANCY
Christine BOULBY is due to retire as Subscription Secretary this year and so we are looking for someone to take on this role as soon as possible. The Subscription Secretary is an important member of the Club and on Council.
They talk to many new and existing members to ensure that their payments and membership renewals go through smoothly. It is an interesting job needing some computer experience, but mainly a helpful and welcoming approach with people.
We have an efficient computer system which holds the database and this is being improved and simplified to minimise the administrative time required. The post is only open to those living anywhere in the UK as it requires access to members' own personal information.
The work required has been considerably reduced and has been split into several smaller jobs that can be done by two or three volunteers.
It is therefore now VITAL that we have members in place to assist in the next month or so, as Christine demits office at the AGM.
To talk without any obligation, please contact Christine BOULBY on subsec@srgc.org.uk, or the Treasurer Richard GREEN on treasurer@srgc.net.
