White/blue WITHOUT yellow throat:
'Major' - biflorus ssp alexandri–
Petals with pointed tips, outer petals dark-blue with a sharply delimited white margin,
yellow anthers, does set seed, tube white.

‘Kittiwake’
– Petals with pointed tips, outer petals blue with a sharply delimited white margin, yellow anthers,
tube violet-blue, generally smaller than ‘Major’ and with softer colour.

‘Ladykiller’
– White petals with pointed tips and a dark-blue blotch – diffused border to the white margin.
Whitish, defective anthers. Plants from trade are often virused and have deformed flowers,
like seen in the photo below. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Prins Claus’
– Petals white, broad and rounded with dark-blue blotch on the outside,
anthers whitish and defective, but does set seed with pollen from other plants.

‘Fairy’ – biflorus ssp weldenii
- Petals with pointed tips, outside speckled soft-blue, dark-blue basal blotch.
Has never set seeds in my garden.

‘Skyline’
– White petals with 5-7 blue stripes on the outside and a grey-bluish basal-blotch,
whitish defective anthers, but does set seed with other plants’ pollen.

‘Miss Vain’/ex ‘Purity’ – biflorus ssp weldenii
- Pure white with a soft grey-bluish basal blotch, pointed outer petals,
has never set seed in my garden. The name ‘Miss Vain’ was not accepted by the KAVB,
so the plant was named ‘Purity’ until 1991 when ‘Miss Vain’ was finally accepted.

‘Albus’ – biflorus ssp weldenii
- Pure white with rounded outer petals, sets lots of seeds.
Rarely offered, but never true – most plants from trade are in fact ‘Miss Vain’.

White/blue with dark stripes:
‘Argenteus’ – biflorus ssp biflorus
- White petals with a soft-blue hint, 3 dark purple stripes running down into the stem, sets lots of seeds.

‘Parkinsonii’ – biflorus ssp biflorus
- White petals with a soft-yellowish hint, 3 purple stripes – brighter than in ‘Argenteus’, sets lots of seeds.

‘Snowbunting’
– White petals, with a soft-yellow hint on the outside and 5-7 long violet-purple stripes, never sets seed in my garden

‘White Beauty’
– White petals with dark purple blotch and stripes on the base of the outside,
stripes much shorter than in ‘Snowbunting’. Has a good seed set.

‘White Triumphator’
– White petals with blue stripes on the outside, throat brighter than in ‘White Beauty’.
Anthers defective, but does set seed with other plants' pollen.

‘Serevan’ – biflorus ssp adamii
- Bright blue, elongated petals with 3 dark purple stripes going down into the stem, has some seeds from time to time.

‘Willem van Eeden’
– New cultivar with white petals and dark purple-blue stripes on the throat,
continuing further to the top with softer colour, not in trade yet, has a good seed set.

Blue without stripes:
’Blue Pearl’
– Rounded, bright blue petals with darker blotch on the outside and bronze speckled basal blotch, has never set seed in my garden.

– Pointed blue petals with dark blotch on the outside and bronze speckled on the base,
overall impression somewhat darker than ‘Blue Pearl’, does set seed, sometimes offered in trade, but rarely true.

‘Zenith’
– Petals outside blue, inside soft-blue, has a good seed set.

White/blue with dark blotch:
‘Ard Schenk’
– Petals white, broad and rounded with bright blue blotch on the throat,
anthers yellow, does set seed from time to time.

‘Aubade’
– Petals white with blue blotch on the throat, darker than in ‘Ard Schenk’,
earlier and smaller than ‘Ard Schenk’, defective, whitish anthers, has never set seed in my garden

‘Blue Bird’
– White petals, outside violet-blue with white margin,
tube light-bluish, has never set seed in my garden.

‘Blue Peter’
- Petals soft-bluish, with a big dark blue-purple blotch on the outside,
tube purplish, has a good seed set.

‘Warley’
– White petals, outer petals with a big purple blotch on yellowish ground,
does never set seed in my garden, rarely offered in trade but never true.

‘Eyecatcher’
– White petals, outside dark purple with white margin, does set seed.
Disappeared from trade due to virus in Dutch stock, only present in a few private collections.

Brownish groundcolour:
‘Brown Surprise’
– Soft yellow broad petals with brown-yellow blotch on the outer petals.
-
‘Brunette’
– Yellow/brownish rounded petals, tube speckled brownish in the upper part,
bronze basal-blotch on the outer petals sending short thick stripes to the top.
-
‘Brassband’
– Yellow/brownish petals, somewhat elongated with bronze blotch on the outside,
tube striped brownish/purplish, overall impression somewhat darker than ‘Brunette’.

‘Spring Pearl’
– Soft yellow petals, on the outer side purple-yellow with purple basal blotch, has a good seed set.

Soft Yellow groundcolour:
’Advance’
– Soft yellow petals, outside violet with a yellow margin, stem purplish,
has never set seed in my garden. Very short flowers.

‘Myddelton Cream’
– Sulphur-yellow petals with violet-blue speckling on the outer petals.
Very rare, only present in a few specialist collections.
-
‘Romance’
– Petals inside chromium-yellow, outside cream-yellow with greyish basal blotch,
has never set seed in my garden.

‘EA Bowles’
– Petals lemon yellow with a green-bronce basal blotch continuing
into fine lines half way up to the top, tube light purplish.

– Petals elongated and pointed, completely cream-yellow.
Small purple blotch on the base of the outer petals.

‘Cream Beauty’
– Petals cream-yellow, broad and rounded,
outside with purple blotch with two stripes to the top, bigger than in ‘Moonlight’.
Has a good seed set and flowers later than 'Moonlight'

‘Jeannine’
– Soft-yellow rounded petals, big purple blotch on the outside with bronze throat, does set seed.

‘Constellation’
– Soft-yellow petals with soft-purple feathering and bronze basal-blotch. Has a good seed set.

Pure yellow:
‘Sunspot’
– Golden yellow flowers with rounded petals, style black, top of tube striped purple.
-
‘Goldmine’
– Small golden yellow flowers with white stem, big corms flower with more than 6 petals,
small corms only bring 6-petaled flowers.

The following 4 cultivars are only listed for completeness. It seems like there are several stocks with different plants in trade, so I can’t be sure if my plants are true to name or not. All are pure yellow with more or less colour in the stem and various petal forms. Perhaps the original collection was made from more than one corm – this would explain the variation and confusion with naming these 4 variants.
‘Afyon’
–Coll. by VV. (no. TW.125555) in Turkey: Prov. Afyon, Kumalar Dag Range, near village Nuh, alt. 1250 m, 12.05.1993. Very early flowering population, likely to be genetically close to C.c. 'Uschak Orange', from neighbouring Usak Province. It starts flowering with us a few days earlier than 'Uschak Orange', often in the third week of January
‘Milea’
– Coll. CH.865 in Northern Greece: Epirus Province, Pindus Range, near Katara Pass, at 1450 m alt., 1987
‘Prespa Gold’
– Originally collected as CH.814 in Rep. Macedonia: Mt Galicica, alpine meadow, 1600-1900 m alt., 15.05.1987.
‘Uschak Orange’
– Coll. in W. Turkey, Prov. Usak, near town of Usak at 900-1000 m alt., in 1971

Yellow with stripes:
‘Goldene Sonne’
– Brightest yellow of all, pointed petals with 3-5 short purple stripes
on the base of the outer petals. Has a good seed set.

‘Spotlight’
– Butter-yellow small petals with 5 very fuzzy stripes on the outside. Stem white.

‘Dorothy’
– Bright-yellow petals, with diffused feathering on the outer petals.
Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Fuscotinctus’
– Bright-yellow petals with plum-purple feathering running down the stem.
Smaller and the feathering clearer than in ‘Dorothy’. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Harlequin’
– Bright yellow petals with purple feathering running to the top of the stem,
stronger than in ‘Fuscotinctus’, lower tube white.

‘Gipsy Girl’
– Yellow petals, broad and rounded with 5-7 dark-purple stripes on the outer petals,
running down into the stem. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Mariette’
– Yellow petals with 5-7 dark-purple stripes on the outer petals,
looking similar to ‘Gipsy Girl’ but has a brighter yellow colour and
bronze speckled base and stem.

‘Saturnus’
- Yellow pointed petals with 3 purple stripes, softly bronze speckled basal blotch.
Opens star shaped. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Suzie’
– Can be easily confused with ‘Saturnus’ – but is smaller in appearance and stripes shorter.
Yellow pointed petals with 3 purple stripes, softly bronze speckled basal blotch.
Opens star shaped. Has never set seed in my garden.

Yellow with dark blotch:
‘EP Bowles’
– Chromium-yellow petals with a purple basal block and 2 stripes running up to the apex.
Stem bronze speckled. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Goldilocks’
– Fragrant. Lemon-yellow petals with a dull purplish basal blotch. Stem olive-green in the upper half.
Often forms double flowers. Similar to EP Bowles, but with a brighter yellow.

‘Canary Bird’
– Cadmium-yellow petals with bronze basal blotch on the outside softer than in ‘Goldilocks’.
Stem completely speckled bronze. Has never set seed in my garden.

‘Sunset’
– Small yellow flowers with a dark purple-brownish blotch on the upper half
of the outer petals, lower part softly speckled bronze.

‘Herald’
– Soft yellow large petals, outside nearly completely purplish with a yellowish edge, has a good seed set.

‘Elegance’
– Bright yellow petals, outside with large brownish blotch, smaller than in ‘Herald’,
has never set seed in my garden.

‘Zwanenburg Bronze’
– Bright yellow petals, outside completely bronze-coloured but still with a yellowish touch,
has never set seed in my garden.
