Title: Kalmia procumbens
Post by: Roger Fellows on April 30, 2021, 01:59:24 PM
First of all, thank you for accepting my application.

I have to confess that I am not a plantsman or gardener. My current obsession is with moths ( very few species eat your clothes ).

I would like to acquire/grow Kalmia procumbens because Broad-bordered White Underwing, Anarta melanopa, is attracted to it.

The moth is a montane species occurring mostly above 1,500'. The plan is to grow Kp in my S Cumbria garden and take it on Scottish expeditions.

If anybody has seed or plants they are happy to sell, I should be most grateful. If I manage to obtain seed I shall need planting instructions, so advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much,          Roger

Roger, I am wondering why you want to take the plant to Scotland?

The proposal would be illegal, surely, if I understand this correctly as a proposal to plant K. p. in "the wild", or even on property that somone does not own?

There are also the phytosanitary reg's to be reckoned with if importing seed.

To flush out the moth, presumably you could just bring the plant to likely places in its pot ;)
