Title: Ruslan's underground plant "pit"
Post by: Ru on December 06, 2015, 08:21:34 PM
Finish! Today, all the plants in the greenhouse, already. Frost after two days. I had time!

Ru, how well your   alpin-pit has turned out!   I will repeat all your photos here to show them all together. [attachimg=1]

and Ru's last  pix.... after 180 tonnes of soil and clay excavated....

Nearly all pots have galanthus in them!   It will be much easier to keep the pots from freezing in this  deep  pit-house than it would in an above ground greenhouse.

Impressive, isn't it? !!! 8) 8) 8)

Added  later in December - Ru's  example of temperature comparison, inside and outside the pit .....
"The temperature on the street (Shadow, 1,8 m above the ground) and the temperature in the conservatory at the level of the ground, the north wall."

Thank you, Maggi!
Three months of voluntary hard labor in the past!  :)
But ... there is no place for hybrids in 2016! ... :)

I predict more digging in the Spring, Ru, for another pit.

Well done Ru, a most impressive achievement :o

Another pit next year?

No!!!
I have a nervous tic due to this pit!!
Most likely, I restore two old winter pits (2,5x5 meters each).

I'm incredibly impressed as I had never even heard of a deep-pit house before.  Is the reflective material on the walls to increase the light level?  You presumably don't want insulation there because you are relying on the surrounding earth for temperature control?

The reflective material for illumination. Very effective!
The upper foils makes a "thermos". Bottom  is strengthened differently. Chance of thermal exchange and air movement under the membrane.

This design is somewhat redundant. I realize that. It was possible to make a greenhouse on. You can put the thermostat (0, + 1 degree Celsius) and convectors. It is much cheaper. But there is a possibility that the electricity is not one day or week. I live in an interesting country :). If this happens, it is sure to be on the street -15, -20 degrees Celsius. Murphy and Parkenson's laws no one didn't cancel :).  What happens in this case ?.

"The temperature on the street (Shadow, 1,8 m above the ground) and the temperature in the conservatory at the level of the ground, the north wall."

Certainly shows a benefit from the pit. :)

More from Ru in the temperatures in and out of  "the pit" :
" Night 1.01.2016-2.01.2016. on the street  -14,-16. in the pit + 3, + 2. are two of the convector 0,5 and 1 Kilowatt. So, bottom line, 1,5 kilowatt -16 on the street holding stable plus at the square 72 meters Square (Volume 205 M³)."

No problem with water? Here, it would have been pools at this time of the year!

But I know they will work with good drainage in the floor.
A friend of mine built one several years ago and he made "holes in the wall" (he used drainage pipes through  the foundation) where he planted all kinds of heat loving trees and shrubs. No soil inside the house and the roots were very deep and below the freezing zone.

Don't they look good?  Ru has  been showing some quite exceptional galanthus on Facebook.

Alas, not so simple. Light a lack of light, high humidity, nutritive substrate. Several changing the shape of petals. Poor seen uneven, poorly visible form of drops. But green is becoming a surprisingly bright and saturated.

Well such problems are not visible in your photos of the snowdrops  you've been showing on Facebook. :-\

Similar deterioration with all round, ridge, hilly. I don't know how I will conduct selection from hybrids with these signs.

On the other hand, it is a provocative background at selection. All that will be with hillocks in the greenhouse, will yield excellent result in a garden.

Getting pretty cold around  what Ingrid calls the   "Ru cathedral" - he's getting lots of plants in flower though - even if he says " Plants have slowed the development :( . The temperature in the greenhouse is  + 3 С, at day and night. The street -15 night, -6-7 day.

Hi Ruslan,
Someone (online) suggested that your plant pit has been damaged.
        Are you able to comment?

The greenhouse was not damaged. Several nearby houses were damaged. Several rockets exploded from multiple rocket launchers. There were no victims. At the time. Later, one of the villagers was killed by a mine in a pasture. The roofs and windows of the houses have already been restored. Alas, I cannot visit garden often. 15 km walk there and the same back. Multiple enemy checkpoints. Yesterday the greenhouse was full. I called my neighbor. He lives there.

I hope all of us are deeply concerned about the terrible situation in the war against Ukraine. It is a relief that our friends there are safe - so far. Our hearts are with them all.

Hi Ruslan,

Thanks for the update. I was not sure if you would be able to communicate.

I do not know what I would do in your situation.

Praying that the storm clouds of war will pass soon.
