unknown Romulea
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:25:19 PM »
Hi all ,

Last year in spring by my trip on Ikaria ( greek islands ) I found this plants in the mountains -I think it is a Romulea .
Knows anybody which species this is ?
Maybe is it a new species - this island is not well know and researched from botanists .
Any advices are welcome - thanks !

With best wishes
Hans

I'm not sure which it is, but it  IS one of those that has seeded itself into the BD's sand plunges!

Hans, it may be very rare, I do not know the situation in the wild. I meant only that I recognised it as one that we have here. It is not a very plentiful, here, even though it seeds itself.
We have had many bulbs, or seeds, from the collection of the late Harold Esslemont who had many good friends in the world of plants who would send him seeds etc, also he made visits abroad to see flowers in the wild and he made several trips to Greece..... this Romulea is one that came from him and "escaped" from its pot and now lives "free" in the plunge. It is a lovely thing and we have got one or two babies growing in the rock hard "scree" of our drive, which have flowered for a year or two now.

Polunin & Huxley (Flowers of the Mediterranean. Chatto and Windus 1965) say of Romulea linaresii " has small violet flowers with purple throats...... about 15 mm, long with hairy throat; stigmas 3...Habitat: maritime sands and turf; France to Turkey.

Anthony ,

I believe you are right with your ID - in the web I have found now pictures which looks very similar to the plants who I have found .
A little amazing is for me the habitat -I found it on two places high on the mountains ( 800m) - I know Romulea grows mostly on sealevel in sand .

Maggi ,

Thank you for your explanation -it is interesting that this plant comes from H. Esslemont .
A big "Thank You" to the SRGC and the possibility with this great forum -it is really a fantastic source of informations ,growing tips ,exchange of plants ,friendly members and a lot of fun !
