'POP UP'orchids
« on: June 09, 2014, 03:08:23 PM »
These two orchids have 'popped up' in the garden and may have some real decorative potential! I hope!!
But what are they.
I think the first (three pics)  is no more than a Dac. hybrid - but the second?
Help appreciated.

The second looks a bit  like Scilla peruviana!

John
The second plant looks like another Dactylorhiza, but one which is closer to purple rather than pale.  Similar to some of the UK marsh orchids, but the different dactylorhizas are so muddled together in cultivation that I wouldn't hazard a guess as to whether it was a species or a hybrid.  I have a very similar plant flowering now in my garden.

The first is surely D. maculata maybe ssp fuchsii? and the last pic looks like what I have as elata but I think isn't, could be foliosa. I have hybrids among the lot and yes, they do "pop up" is a very pleasant way. It's nice to have what are, in effect, naturalized orchids about the garden, sometimes in my grass or maybe in a crack in a concrete path, often in a cushion of sometimes or a trough.
