There's a new seller on ebay - MonksilverSnowdrops. No guessing who that is ;)
-
So what has happened to Mr O Howes?
-
'dropped out I guess
-
But Joe Sharman likes to profess his own lack of access to modern technological aids such as electricity so I'm sure somebody must be helping-out with his eBay sales. Perhaps the change of name is to reflect that Monksilver Nursery is now selling as a business rather than via an individual?
-
A quite new seller on ebay - Ian the Christie kind , has one of Hagen's beautiful drops on ebay at the moment :
Galanthus 'Federkleid' - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291654774088?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291654774088?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT)
-
Just had a quick look Maggi, Ian's auction is coming along nicely, a good price has been reached already.
-
Does anyone know who ebay seller gata444 is?
-
And who is queen-beez?
-
Don't know about those - but Mark Smyth had a list of respectable sellers the other day - here are a few...
North Green aka erifis88
Andy Byfield aka bitarla
Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery
Cornovium
Engelsdropje
Ian Christie aka sgtmajor47
wheelieneily
wirralwave
ombersleyplants
Beth Chatto
Matt Bishop
farmhouse5000
Anne Wright is DRYADZNY
groman4444 is Melvyn Jope
there will be some more you can trust- it would be helpful if they were added here ... the GOOD ones! There are some selling that are new names for old trouble - caveat emptor !
-
It would be very useful to have a list of the ebay seller names of reputable sellers - as you say, there's a lot of fraudsters out there. I wouldn't buy on ebay unless I knew who the seller was.
-
Yes, a positive list is good - negative reports cause too much grief all round - some of the shysters get very ratty!
-
Some will list something which they don't even have. Just to get a bit of money. Very very sneaky.
-
Maggi, Ralph and Lewis I can vouch for wheelieneily, I bought a galanthus three ships plant off him the week and it arrived the other day. It arrived well wrapped and in a cardboard tube and was a good size plant. I would definitely order from him again.
-
But is it definitely ` Three Ships`?
-
And who is queen-beez?
My AT tells me that this seller has changed their name on Ebay, not necessarily dodgy but:
User ID Effective Date End Date
queen-beez 19-Nov-12 Present
greentipsnowdrop 14-Apr-10 19-Nov-12
-
But is it definitely ` Three Ships`?
The thing to be very very wary about is buying a plant that is out of flower and which will not flower for a long time. Fraudsters exploit the fact that eBay only offers redress for mis-sold items if they are identified as such within a limited time period. I think it is worth stating this again for the benefit of newcomers.
'Three Ships' is an example of G. plicatus that might well have finished flowering by now; mine started flowering early in December. But it would be hard to find another such, even unnamed, so the balance of probability would be in favour of its being genuine. And wheelieneily is held to be a respectable seller.
-
Exactly Alan, I only buy plants off eBay from people I bought off before and trust, I also bought the same variety from Veronica Munson who also sells on eBay and I couldn't be happier with the plant I recieved. I'll take a photo later so you can see them.
-
I've never bought anything from ebay and I never will but isn't it a major problem (from a buyers perspective) that sellers cloak themselves in anonymity. One has to wonder if it is to make it easier to refute responsibility?
-
Well, speaking as a private individual who very occasionally sells a snowdrop or two on eBay, I don't want people turning-up on my doorstep unless they are invited, so I would like to keep my address private. I don't mind revealing my address to the buyer if I make a sale but I don't want it known to all and sundry.
Now speaking as an occasional buyer on eBay, I agree that the lack of transparency, particularly about whether one is buying from an private individual or a business, is problematic and sometimes puts me off making a purchase.
-
At the end of the day it all comes down to trust doesn't it, you have to hope the the seller is honest and not going to rob you blind. My own experience with eBay has been good, I have only had one problem and I got a refund the next day.
-
I buy virtually everything off e-bay - its about half an hour to our nearest hardware shop - so I am building some cupboards at the moment and have ordered all the hinges and fittings - saves me time.
Only ever had one issue with one seller from America - paypal refunded the monies
Did buy quite a few plants a couple a years ago off someone who obvoiusly was an alpine gardener - the plants were superb
You just have to be careful with ebay
I have bought items from all over the world without much of a problem - you just have to wait sometimes for delivery - I collect Satsuki Azalea year books from Japan - but I only buy them when the $ is poor against the pound.
Most recent aquisition from china is good fun - if you like making your own herbal tea's - saves making a pot

-
I have recently purchased Cedrics Prolific from gata444 - contained 3 lovely bulbs in very healthy condition and arrived well packaged. He/she has 100% feedback and has been trading for years - so I have no qui so about buying from them. I have also purchased from joss supplies from Northern Scotland, dorasnowdrops and wheelynelly - all good suppliers. I am a bit sceptic about a Galanthus Trumpdy Dumpty which is on at the moment!!!!!

Susan
I think gata444's postage charges are excessive
-
I am a bit sceptic about a Galanthus Trumpdy Dumpty which is on at the moment!!!!!
I think the seller has almost certainly invented the name 'Trumpdy Dumpty" themselves but they are at liberty to do that. And they could well be correct that it is a seedling from Trym and another unidentified snowdrop. The photo on eBay is so over-exposed it strikes me as genuine. So the two questions that remain are:
- Is it really different from other existing snowdrops?
- Does it have any merit?
-
My AT tells me that this seller has changed their name on Ebay, not necessarily dodgy but:

queen-beez 19-Nov-12 Present

I can vouch for queen beez as they are my cousin :)

I assume that HMRC won't treat income accrued from ebay sales as unearned income?
-
So that's why they hide behind a pseudonym? I have a LOT of experience of fraud and fraudsters (in a professional capacity, I should add), and lack of transparency is a key indicator. But maybe it's the taxman they are defrauding rather than the buyer? Genuine rare 'drops but undeclared income? Either way, whether it is conmen selling common G. nivalis as rare varieties or people selling genuine rare 'drops but avoiding tax, I do not approve.
-
I suspect - and hope - that HMRC are pretty good at sniffing out the tax fraudsters. That's not my worry - my worry is for those stealing others' photos to sell plants they don't have and flogging plants that are not true to name.
If we can gather a list here of people who have been found to be genuine ( and this means delivering a bulb which is true to name - not just a healthy 'drop which is not as named - as has sometimes been the case in the past!)
-
I assume that HMRC won't treat income accrued from ebay sales as unearned income?
I have a friend who does a lot of trading on e-bay and it seems that that the tax man starts to get interested once you have sold about £4.5K
This is why a lot of people will use multiple id's
From the e-mails I saw that he received ebay and HMRC seem to exchange information
-
Hi Alan this is the two galanthus three ships plant photo as promised. I hope you can still tell what they are, the flowers have nearly gone over since I last looked at them.
-
Can anyone reveal who "yamatutai " might be?
-
it is Uwe Stiebritz, a German nursery man near Jena.
Good quality and fai conditions I think.
-
Thank you, Hagen!
-
Bought from Peninsula Primulas (primulaexpert on ebay) twice before. They very very good. Arrived quickly, plants are bareroot looked very healthy. Plants flowered nonstop through spring. One to add to the good list.
-
I've bought loads via eBay and have only had problems on a couple of occasions - no worse than through any other means. Moreover, with Paypal you can get a refund easily enough. It's important to read the descriptions carefully though, and buy only from sellers that have good feedback. Just bought three snowdrops tonight as it happens, so hopefully these will be fine as well!
I did once buy 30 Galanthus sold as 'Magnet' from a lady who was selling them for £4.99 or something. I didn't really believe they would be Magnet but thought I would take a punt. Turned out they were straight nivalis. I'm afraid I don't know her id, this was 4-5 years ago. Moral: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is! Otherwise have bought 20+ snowdrops over the years and not had a single problem.
-
I assume that HMRC won't treat income accrued from ebay sales as unearned income?
I don't know about "unearned" but see http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/When-does-eBay-selling-become-taxable-/10000000004494855/g.html (http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/When-does-eBay-selling-become-taxable-/10000000004494855/g.html) for guidance on the UK tax treatment of eBay sales. I would have thought that anyone who regularly sells snowdrops on eBay should expect to be treated as if they were a business and taxed on their profits. But if you are a hobbyist and use any income from eBay sales to buy more snowdrops then there are no profits.

Re Arthur's comments about gata444's P & P charges, might it be because posting involves quite a trek - we've only a 5 mile round trip to a Post Office but friends in a Leicestershire village have 14 miles to go each time; it does add to the cost.

We take a packed lunch when visiting the post office. :o

These arrived today from adlinkpen. Good plants very thoroughly wrapped: 'Madelaine', 'Sentinel' and 'Lapwing'.

I see 'Trumpdy Dumpty' (which could be 'Trumps' in an over-exposed picture as far as I can tell) is up to £56 on eBay. Some of the people all of the time? Good name, though.

Quality flower from reliable seller ( Paul of Edulis Nursery) here :

- something for the lovers of greeny 'drops - "Timber Wolf"
-
I have bought from wheelieneily and the plants are correct and very good plants so I am deffo vouching for them - there are some great sellers on ebay
New sellers that dont ring a bell with me are
Paulramonda - currently listing Cliff Curtis
tinykitty24 - listing Green Arrow
Maggi, Ralph and Lewis I can vouch for wheelieneily, I bought a galanthus three ships plant off him the week and it arrived the other day. It arrived well wrapped and in a cardboard tube and was a good size plant. I would definitely order from him again.

HMRC have taken quite an interest in the last year or so on sellers on Ebay as they do not in a lot of cases realise that they have to declare their income - they look at what that person is selling and then decide on whether they would deem it fair for the trader to be classed as a business - eg if a username sold 100 different snowdrops they would class this as a business but if that same seller sold 10 snowdrops, a table and chairs, a tv, general bits n pieces they would not bother
I assume that HMRC won't treat income accrued from ebay sales as unearned income?
-
Paulramonda - currently listing Cliff Curtis - thisis Paul of Edulis Nursery - forum name here here as " uvularia"
Perfectly respectable!
-
tinykitty24 - listing Green Arrow
No idea who this is - but a strange assortment of photos that look like they've been lifted from various places
:-\ :-X

I don't think it's a question of not bothering; if you sell something as a private individual, the money you make is not taxable as income. Certain assets may be liable to capital gains tax if you make enough of a profit but I don't think that applies to bulbs as they have a limited lifespan. But if you spend a lot of time and energy selling a lot of stuff then that activity might well be classed as a business. If so, any profits made would be taxable.

- something for the lovers of greeny 'drops - "Timber Wolf"
I see Paul Barney's Timber Wolf went for £161 - beyond my pocket but looks a nice virescent nivalis; North Green's Prague Spring looks reasonably similar (although I do not have it) and nearer my price range at least
-
And the amusingly-named (but badly photographed) 'Trumpdy Dumpty' sold for £82. Blow me down. No signs of galanthomania ending this year!
-

Is it just me or are there quite a few drops on ebay at the moment that I certainly have never heard of before - yes there is another Trumpdy Dumpty but there are several others
Galanthus 'whittali'
Galanthus 'Shrubbery Special'
Galanthus Henry broughton
Galanthus.'Brandling'
Very Rare Galanthus X "Heads Above Water"
Got to admit I am so tempted at a few of those above, some of from sellers that I trust but I am cautious because others are from sellers I have not seen before - I know everyone has to start somewhere though - any thoughts and guidance very gratefully accepted
-
eBay seller Edwardhutchin-0 likes to make up names for his snowdrops and sell them on eBay. He (?) is responsible for 'Trumpdy Dumpty', 'Heads Above Water' and some others. There is nothing wrong with this per se but with the quality of his photos it is hard to know what you are getting so you might easily be disappointed.
Wheelieniely, selling 'Shrubbery Special', is by all accounts a respectable seller but I have never heard of this one.
Broughton is the surname of the family that donated Anglesey Abbey to the National Trust. 'Henry Broughton' is a real snowdrop but the picture on eBay has been lifted from this web site http://www.gapphotos.com/featuredetails.asp?featureref=16 (http://www.gapphotos.com/featuredetails.asp?featureref=16) and that is always a danger signal.
'Whittallii' was a known cultivar (captial W, double l & i). It now seems to have morphed into one of the 'Edward Whittall Group'. Unknown seller, photograph poor.
The eBay text for 'Brandling' seems to be self-explanatory.
it was nice to meet you on Saturday, colineddie1.
-
Colin
In case it helps you, Whittalii has been in gardens for many years, one of the strongest-growing and tallest of the snowdrops. And cheap to buy. To use the old phrase "a good do-er". So quite a contrast with many of the current highly-priced newcomers that no-one has seen actually growing. I do still buy a few of the newcomers sight unseen but when I do its from suppliers whose description I trust - and they can be counted pretty much on the fingers of one and a half hands.
-
Shrubbery Special was in the North Green Snowdrops list a couple of years ago, originating from a Norfolk garden of a well-known gardener - my ageing info retrieval system = memory won't provide me with his name.

Steve it was a seedling found in Rod and Jane Leeds garden in Suffolk, not Norfolk.

It was lovely to meet you also on Saturday - I was also trying to get to Brian and Chas but bonus was yourself and Emma, I already knew Blonde Ingrid and her AT from previous years - lol
Thank you for the above information - when you are only learning everything looks amazing and pretty and I have fallen foul of buying drops (not cheap) and then discovering that they are difficult to grow (nearly did it this time but a lovely Dutch gentleman said it was a really difficult drop to grow so I didn't get it)

This one might be worth a look at then as I am sort of trying to stick to good do-ers (says she who has bought an Anglesey Orange Tip at Myddleton - will I ever learn!) - Thank you Steve for the above information.
-

Yes thanks Brian, couldn't summon up their name. I has Shrubbery Special and carelessly lost it. But I'm not paying Ebay prices to replace it.

Anyone out there bought from numptyrobert? (based in Edinburgh apparently). Any good?
-
I've had a personal message from a European collector who appears to use eBay a lot and wishes to recommend seller 'numptyrobert'. He mentions four snowdrops he has bought from this seller.
-
I see Paul Barney's Timber Wolf went for £161 - beyond my pocket but looks a nice virescent nivalis; North Green's Prague Spring looks reasonably similar (although I do not have it) and nearer my price range at least
It is in its first year of offering. Hopefully we will have some a reasonable prices next year. It is a good grower and bulks up nicely.
-
I purchased Sir Herbert Maxwell from "numptyrobert" and had excellent service.
Yesterday I received Hippolyta bulbs from "firecrystal02" - these bulbs were stunning plus I got 3 extra bulbs included in the price. I have bought a few more bulbs from this seller in the past year. I would highly recommend this seller.
-
Thanks Alan and Susan!
-
I got a "buy it now" of 15 Hippolyta from firecrystal02 for £20 - was delighted to open box and find 18 very large and healthy bulbs. All potted up in the greenhouse waiting for the gales and rain to subside!!!!
Worth a buy if you are looking for an instant display - would thoroughly recommend.
-
Firecrystal is a good seller - bought from her some from the composer series a couple of years ago.

Ah, now I see, thanks.

Another two beauties on Ebay from the reputable forumnist and breeder Hagen Engelmann (planthill54). Both are nivalis and flower rather at the end of the snowdropseason.
Many will probably say ‘at last’ ! They are offered for the first time and many will be pleased that it happens finally. ‘The way is open now’ what means that they will be more obtainable in the future for several of us. Let’s hope !
‘Wellenspiel ‘ (‘Play of the Waves’) has distinct wavy edges as most important characteristic, a ‘3D snowdrop’ !
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Galanthus-nivalis-WELLENSPIEL-/191795846779?hash=item2ca7ec5e7b:g:1WkAAOSw5dNWrk6j (http://www.ebay.de/itm/Galanthus-nivalis-WELLENSPIEL-/191795846779?hash=item2ca7ec5e7b:g:1WkAAOSw5dNWrk6j)
‘Till Sonnenschein’ (‘Till Sunshine’), a Angelina-type, has a special and typical ‘fluo’-yellow green mark on the outers which is difficult to capture in a picture, a truly ‘glowing’ snowdrop in the flesh. Yellowish green marks on the outers (full sunshine) are an effective contrast to the deep green marks at the base of the inners and the blue green leaves, a ‘3green colored snowdrop’ !

I met and shook hands with eBay seller 'wheelieneily' on Saturday. He was a gentleman called Neil who explained that he sells off his surplus stock to fund further snowdrop purchases and builds-up this stock by natural division rather than chipping or twin-scaling.
-
He told me he was going to a few of the shows so he could introduce himself, he seems a genuine sort of bloke, I certainly have no qualms about buying from him again.

Neil is a very reliable seller on Ebay.
He sells bulbs with high quality. I bought some from him last year and was very pleased.
Also firecrystal02 is a very good seller. I bought bulbs from her for some years now and I was never disappointed.
-
Absolutely delighted with my purchases from 'firecrystal02' on EBay.
Some were in the green and some in pots. The potted ones were ingeniously packed and arrived in excellent condition.
Hope she has further plants.

I have bought several Galanthus from firecrystal02 in the past and he/she has always supplied excellent goods.
Would thoroughly recommend.

Galanthus nivalis ‘Schmalhans im Grünen’ on Ebay

‘Schmalhans im Grünen’ refers to a German turn of phrase ‘Bei ihm ist Schmalhans Küchenmeister‘, freely translated into English ‘By him is thin Hans head chef’. It means: he is short of cash, there should even be saved on the food; referring to a thin cook who hasn’t enough food for himself (a cook should be well fed, thus being fat).
The flowerbuds of the snowdrops look a little bit ‘thin/slender’ while the open flowers look more ‘fat/thick’. The general view is that of a green snowdrop whereby both the skirt, as well as the outer petals have additional green markings. All in all this nivalis is a good doer which increases well.

But do I read it correctly,no shipping to the U.K. ??
That's a mistake, Chas - Hagen made a mistake with the listing and he hasn't yet worked out how to change it. It was the first question I asked him when he started listing! Yes, he will ship to UK .

:) :) :)

I really like ‘Schmalhans im Grünen’, it's increasing steadily and is a lovely 'drop.

Galanthus ‘Schorbuser Lampion’ is a plicatus-gracilis hybrid with a well-chosen name.
Schorbus
Schorbus is a hamlet of Drebkau near Cottbus in the federal state Brandenburg, Germany, home of the finder.
Lampion
The beautiful globular outers with the long claws look like a lampion while the green coloured marking on the inners turn from green to a warm yellow orange. All this stands in nicely contrast with the green ovary. Interesting is the fact that the claw elongates as the flower develops so that the inner shade of colour even can be seen when the flower is closed.

indeed - a fantastic colour combo (and I always like those with gracilis in the genes); would like it to get together with this plicatus of mine with interesting coloured inners!

Oh and now there is me
cwhight ( ebay user name) ;)

Hi chas I've put you onto my list to follow, I like the nivalis blonde Inge you have for sale.
-
Hi to all,
I decided to put one of mine for the first time in my life for sale. My nickname is: cephalanthera1
I placed a unique form of Galanthus nivalis, which I will soon describe and officially name: 'Forest Muse'.
It has yellowish outer petals. The inners are yellow, but when the flower develops they are still green. After it opens they are turning into pure yellow. It does not matter if the plant is disturbed or settled down. Both features will appear.

Echoed Chris & Maggs, that result verged very close to breaking into the Top 20 snowdrop prices! ;D ;D ;D
Nice job!

Hmm, I can just hear Alan Freeman (or currently Scott Mills, I believe) doing a chart rundown.

Hello to everyone,
I decided to put two bulbs of Forest Muse on eBay again, because I had more requests than there are plants in cultivation. I am overworked due to the current pandemics and I didn't have enough time to replant my snowdrops earlier and offer some other of my findings. I realy hope that will change next year.
Here you can find the auctions:
1 adult + 1 young bulb

Hi Maggi,
I really hoped to put my other findings on eBay this year, but I couldn't replant them in the proper time. I am quite overworked I just replanted some of the plants yesterday with the help of my wife to have it done and most of plants already had well developed roots. I only have had Forest Muse stored from earlier and always hoped to take out some other forms, but that just never happened. I am happy, that all of my Snowdrops plants are in good conditions now and there should be symbolic losses if any at all. (I really hope so). I will have 12 days of holiday on the beginning of September and I wanted to start it with calm mind. That is also all free time I will have this year... Maybe I will have some time to show some of my photos and prepare some descriptions for the next year.
