Title: Erythronium 2022
Post by: Peppa on March 29, 2022, 08:07:43 AM
This Erythronium idahoense (I received the seeds as E. grandiflorum ssp. candidum from Ron Ratko) has been flowering facing upwards for several years. I saw a picture of a similar up-facing E. grandiflorum var. pallidum from Ed Alverson in International Rock Gardener and was wondering if it is a trait of these species or just a coincidence.

Peppa,

It seems to be a trait.  Mine do it too.

Interesting! Is your up-facing Erythronium E. idahoense or E. grandiflorum?

Peppa,

I grow both; but, my grandiflorum have not flowered yet.

Is this an Erythronium americanum seedling? It just popped out in our backyard.

Another year or two to wait for a flower! Certainly one of the  Estern Americans!

Many of my friends grow Erythronium americanum and report few or no flowers. I counted 33 flowers in my patch this year.  I suspect it's the form, not my great growing ability.

Hi all,

I've read or heard somewhere that there are two strains of E. americanum in the wild -- one that produces sexually and one that multiplies almost exclusively vegetatively.  Around here the latter is by far the most common, sadly.  We see lots of americanum foliage in the woods in spring, but very few flowers.

Erythronium americanum is flowering here in North East Scotland now too. One of my favourites - though I love all erythronium!

My E. americanum flowered in late March and April.  My E. dens-canis are flowering now, but started 2 weeks ago. I only have the species.... no sub species or cultivars.

The seedlist posted today lists a lot of erythronium seeds, particularly forms of E. revolutum.  It is native near me, but we have nowhere called "God's Valley".  "Wild Salmon" sounds as though it should be orange.  That will be interesting to see.

I am also intrigued by the E helenae hybrids called "Chocolate Group".  Presumably the chocolate colour refers to the leaves.

Does anyone know who is growing these forms?
