Gentiana urnula

(1/1)

Catwheazle:
Hello, does anyone here have experience with Gentiana urnula?
thx
Bernd

Maggi Young:
Every experience mentioned in the Forum seems to have failed soon after germination!  I think there are some who do grow it- perhaps in New Zealand?
Good luck with his real beauty of the plant world.

Gentiana urnula seed.

Catwheazle:
thx. Hope i can get some seeds by Holubec

Leucogenes:
Hello Bernd

Gentiana urnula is probably the most spectacular of the Asian gentians in my opinion. I know that it is listed in the various Czech seed lists this year.
Maggie described it correctly...it is one of those species that is probably uncultivable.
I had a trial with this tiny plant a few years ago and I even managed to get two small seedlings that showed the characteristic square shape of the rosettes. But after a short time they disappeared again.

Conclusion...there are a whole range of high alpine plants that are better left where they originally grow... no matter how desirable they are. This realisation took me many years...;-)

However, should someone manage to successfully grow such jewels, I would of course be delighted for them without envy.

Cheers
Thomas

Catwheazle:
Thank you. I know :-(
However, I have the option of alpine conditions here (excluding climate change) so the temptation is quite great. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to get any seeds. Holubec hasn't replied to me and I haven't found anyone for Jurasek whose order I could attach myself to (because of the €30 minimum order). I hope that perhaps the Norwegians, Danes or Swedes will succeed.
