Galanthus December 2020
« on: December 05, 2020, 05:01:37 PM »
Galanthus plicatus 'Three Ships' sailed in very early this year, I should have posted it last month but a sunny day today has helped it look its best.

Are they growing outside, Gail?

And what are the pink flowers?

Outside but under the canopy by the front door. And the pink (ish-purple) are Tulbaghia ‘Purple Eye’; new acquisition last year and I'm very pleased with it. Makes a very neat pot plant and has been flowering for months.

Alan Briggs, well known in the  forum for  his  love  of  snowdrops, is  giving  a  Zoom Talk on Saturday for Plant  Heritage .....

"For anyone interested, I am giving a talk called "Snowdrops - why all the fuss" via Zoom this coming Saturday, 12th December. It will start at 14:30 GMT. As you may guess from the title, the talk is not aimed at snowdrop experts although I hope there will be a few snippets that even an expert does not know."

The talk is for Plant Heritage and is free to PH members; otherwise there is a £5 charge. See https://bit.ly/SnowdropPHtalk

News that another  American nursery has  also put  out  its  snowdrop list  - note  from Rick Goodenough :
"reputable U.S. Snowdrop supplier, Russell Stafford of Odyssey Bulbs and Homegrown has put out his list of Snowdrop availability list along with many other rare plants.
These Snowdrops are being made available now as containerized plants."

Thank you for spreading the word about my talk, Maggi.  I get a touch of stage fright before speaking but I'm usually okay once I get into my stride.  As the speaker, you never find out who listened-in unless they participate in the chat - and that rather flashes past if a lot of people comment.  But thanks to anybody who did listen-in.  Since nobody is allowed out much these days, it's some consolation to be able to present talks that are from further than one can travel to.  I myself am looking forward to the talk from Wim Boens on 13th February.
Almost in Scotland.

Happy  to help, Alan - we  enjoyed the  talk - it's  nice  to  have  something  "out  of the  house"  to enjoy, even  if  we  take  part from inside the  house!
Will need to sign up for   others  too- Wim Boens  for  sure  - I understand  it's  not  on the  Plant  Heritage  events  booking  page  as  yet - will keep an eye  open!

Thank You for Your many tips, Maggi! I was especially grateful for the pics of new introductions offered by Glen Chantry.

Today we had some sunshine and 12 °C.  :)

Lovely pictures!
I have also Fenstead End, but it flowers here in March/April, after winter, and though it may come up earlier through snow, it seems quite hardy and hasn't gotten damaged by cold even last winter when there was no snow.

Just two days before the connections were shut I got my parcel from edulis nursery!

Galanthus 'Big Boy'
Galanthus 'G71'
Galanthus 'Kinn MacIntosh'
Galanthus 'Three Ships'
Galanthus 'Wendy's Gold'
Galanthus 'Mrs MacNamara'
Galanthus 'Big Bertha'
Galanthus 'Peter Gatehouse'
Galanthus 'Santa Claus'

Due to the season and because these are much further than my snowdrops in the garden I planted them into pots and placed them in the cold frame.
A real hunting success and the delivery a little Christmas wonder!

I bought these as Gracillis from the Bulkans three years ago - obviously not Gracillis and instead Elwesii, although maybe some Gracillis in there somewhere but liked them none the less.

This year now the bulbs are mature there are multiple that are sending up second flowers although maybe 2 weeks behind the first.

I know there are others that do this but is it still quite rare or not ?

Hi Deee, eastern and western botanists do not always agree regarding botanical names. When ordering in Eastern Europe, it´s always helpful to look at the pics of the species ordered.
It´s nice to have more than one stalk per bulb, this is sometimes the case with G. elwesii, plicatus and hybrids with G. gracilis. G nivalis very rarely produces more than one stalk. Nice snowdrops, nevertheless.
