Hello everyone. I'm another galanthophile and have enjoyed looking at just a few of the recent posts here but I see I have many more to look at. I live in the north east of England and seem to have great difficulty finding any decent snowdrop gardens near to me. I have around 15 named varieties and about a dozen species in my own garden. Not many by galanthophile standards but I am keen to acquire a few more. I am enjoying my snowdrops very much just now and love them all whether they are named forms or just good old nivalis! Looking forward to reading through the posts and other forums here on what looks like an excellent site!  Ann

Hello Ann and welcome. You will find this a very friendly Forum and just to repeat what Mark has said it is much easier for the experts (of which I am certainly not one) amongst us to help and advise you if you are able to provide a little more information on where abouts in the North you garden.

Delighted you have joined us and look forward tPo your contributions and comments.

You say just 15 or so cultivars and some species as though this was to be scoffed at. Not at all! Collections grow surprisingly quickly. I was in the company of two rather older galanthophilse yesterday. They were offered a very unusual bulb and replied that they thought the gardener hadn't really enough to spare at the moment and that if they got all they wanted this year what would they do at all next year?

The numbers of what you have will increase amazingly quickly and your selection will increase also and, you know, we might be able to help you along the way.

Welcome to galanthophiliacs anonymous!  You'll get some good advice here and you are not the only beginner in need of enlightenment.  Even if you do not have many snowdrop gardens it is well worth going for walks in some of the old woodland to see what you can see. I know someone who, only this year, found a snowdrop being quite obviously different, right in the middle of a clump of 'ordinary' nivalis so it can be done.  There is a school of thought I believe that says we hunt 'names' to the exclusion of seeing what else is out there.  Anyway I am sure you will enjoy the forum and we are glad to have your company :-*

Thanks everyone. It is really nice to be here. I live in the suburbs of Newcastle and just about all of my snowdrops are out. I do have Virescens to look forward to which was a gift for my birthday last year. I have bought a few pots of snowdrops in the last few years marked "mixed snowdrops" and it is amazing what you can find. I had one pure white one but alas I've not seen it reappear since! I've been interested in snowdrops for many years but got into them to collect about 10 years ago. I have the Bishop,Davis, and Grimshaw Monograph which I presume eveyone here does. When I figure out how to post pictures I'll show you some of my plants.

I've worked it out so here are Maidwell L, Augustus, Dionysis, Cedrics Profile, Warei and Lady Elphinstone (green this year)

Hi, Ann, you've cracked the multiple picture posting at the first go! G. warei is a bit big, though! Mind you, a real snowie that size really would be different, and we wouldn't have to bend so far down to see it!

hello Ann great to see some of your snowdrops.

Can I point out some mistakes? Maybe you have been supplied with wrong bulbs. Your 'Dionysus' is nivalis 'Lady Beatrix Stanley', 'Cedric's Prolific' is missing the upper green smudge towards the ovary and nivalis 'Warei' is missing it's green tips

Well thanks! That is what I bought them as - I have Lady Beatrix Stanley and it looks very different from Dionysis - what do you think this one is?

Sorry must sort  out my file names - the top one is Atkinsii and the W is woronowii. This is a yellow form of nivalis.
