Title: News from Growild Nursery
Post by: Growild on March 07, 2015, 11:54:11 AM
Spring seems as if it’s just around the corner and we wanted to let you all know that more botanical treasures have now been added to our plants store on the Growild Nursery website at www.growildnursery.co.uk (http://www.growildnursery.co.uk). Most are extremely limited in number and some, like Arisaema and Paeonia japonica, will be available for a short time only, so order early to avoid disappointment!

Please remember that last orders for plants will be the 30th of April. We prefer sending out plants in their dormant period when they will be less stressed in transit. This cut-off point also gives Lisa a period of time to concentrate wholly on propagating stock for the next autumn plant sale when we will offer you more new exciting seeds and plants. This plant sale should begin in early November. Seed sales continue all year round.

All our best wishes for the gardening year ahead!
Lisa & Andrew

Dear forum members

I wanted to let you all know about a new exciting plant we have just added to our store on the Growild Nursery website.

Potentilla atrosanguinea ‘Chadwell’s Tibetan Velvet’

An absolutely beautiful, clump forming, herbaceous perennial plant with slightly nodding, rich blood red, velvety flowers with black centres and three-lobed, silky-haired, strawberry-like leaves.

50% of sales of this seed will go directly to Chris Chadwell's plant conservation and botanical projects along with charities he supports in Nepal.

We grew this plant originally from seed collected by Chris Chadwell and described as Potentilla ex Tibet with affinities to Potentilla atrosanguinea. With a view to getting this plant into wider cultivation, we got in touch with Chris after finding that the collection number had been long lost and that results gleaned from searches on the internet proved to be muddled and confused. Chris suspects the plant is likely to have come from his 2005 expedition of the NW Himalaya and borderlands of Western Tibet as one collection is described as having blood red flowers. We asked Chris if he thought this form might warrant a name so that, in the future, the plant could be referenced back to one of his collections and, therefore, its history wouldn’t become more confused. He agreed to have the plant named Potentilla atrosanguinea 'Chadwell's Tibetan Velvet'.

For those unfamiliar with Chris’ work, please visit his website www.chadwellseeds.co.uk (http://www.chadwellseeds.co.uk) and consider supporting him yourself. He does not receive any funding for either his research or conservation projects. Without his dedication and knowledge we would not have such plants in cultivation.

Very best wishes
Lisa

Lots happening at Growild - Lisa tells of  the latest project.....

"My next big project for this year at the farm nursery has just begun. This area has been left in it's present condition for over 20 years and is a carpet of the worst kind of weeds, which have to be meticulously dug out, as well as general detritus, rubble and river cobbles (which I'll re-use later for paths). Part of this area has the farms old midden, which is sunk into the ground and has a beautiful old stone square wall. Can't wait to start planting, so many ideas ... so much back-breaking work ahead! Have a nice weekend, Lisa."

Photos.....
Area Lisa  started digging out today
River cobbles dug out today - later to be used for paths.
Towards the back of the photo, sunken into the ground is the old farm midden.
Beautiful old stone wall of the farm midden - plenty of planting opportunities (Lisa is  thinking Begonia's)
Corner of the old farm midden - it's much deeper than this and L. may have to hire in a small digger!

Last date for ordering from Growild Plant Catalogue for the season is 1st May ( see sales remain open).
Lisa and Andrew say:
Quite a few plants have now sold out but we still have a good selection to choose from including those shown in the photo, plus some brand new additions this week. (http://www.growildnursery.co.uk/store/c23/Just_In.html)
Although plant sales are nearly coming to an end, our Seed Shop stays open all year round and we will be adding lots more new and rarely encountered species to our range this year as soon as they are ripe. We are currently very busy propagating stock for our next autumn plant catalogue.
Happy growing and we hope to be able to tempt you back soon.
Lisa & Andrew

Update  from Growild ......

"We wanted to let you know that we have a tempting range of seeds on offer now, including ones which we have never offered before, from some real rarities like Begonias, Salvias and Violas that you will not be able to find anywhere else, to unusual foliage species such as ornamental Plantagos or ones rich in nectar such as Cirsium and Carduus that help out our declining bees and butterflies.
We only offer the freshest, home-grown seed. All our seed has been collected from plants open pollinated in our nursery, which are grown in peat-free soil and without the use of chemicals.

We still have some seeds that are late to ripen and will be adding these later this year so be sure to keep checking back with us.

You can buy as many packets as you want for the same flat shipping rate.

Each order from our Seed Catalogue - https://www.growildnursery.co.uk/store/c2/Seed_Catalogue.html (https://www.growildnursery.co.uk/store/c2/Seed_Catalogue.html) -   comes with a free mystery packet of seeds.

News from Lisa and Andrew:
"OUR NEW PLANT CATALOGUE IS NOW ONLINE!
This year, you will still find a wide range of rare and unusual plants. We have good numbers of most plants but, as we grow everything from scratch ourselves, some plants are very limited in number so we recommend ordering early to avoid disappointment!
We continue to be able to sell plants to customers in the European Union, in fact, orders from EU customers will be prioritised just in case we are unable to ship orders after 31st December 2020 due to the UK leaving the EU. This year, Royal Mail, DPD and Parcelforce will be our preferred couriers for UK and EU deliveries. If your order is coming by DPD, you will receive a 1 hour delivery window via text or email, allowing you to track the parcel's progress on a map.
If you see the plant you want is out of stock, or we're not offering it this year, it may be available in the Seed Shop. Unfortunately, we can't sell plants to customers outside the EU but can still sell seeds.
Lastly, in an effort to reduce our use of non-recyclable black plastic pots, we are phasing out their use and replacing them with recyclable grey plastic pots. Very soon, we hope to be using ONLY recyclable pots.
We do hope you will find something of interest and wish to thank you for your continued support - it means a lot to us!

All our best wishes,

Growild have a  bare-root plant offer until 12th March - see here:
https://www.growildnursery.co.uk/store/c23/Plants_Just_In.html

" Plants for sale now!
WE ARE NOW OFFERING A SELECTION OF BARE ROOT PLANTS FOR SALE. THESE ARE FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY. THE LAST DATE TO ORDER FROM THIS LIST IS SUNDAY 12th MARCH.
We have good numbers of most plants but, as we grow everything from scratch ourselves, some plants are very limited in number and a few are limited to one per customer.

Our delivery rate for bare root plants is a special flat rate of £5.99 (no matter how big or small your order). We cannot hold back orders for customers as plants need to be dispatched as soon as possible while they are still dormant. Please do not ask for multiple orders to be combined - these will have to be sent separately. Seeds can be combined in any plant order as long as they are ordered at the same time. Plant orders will be sent by Royal Mail 24 hour, tracked service.

We have gathered together all the plants on one page HERE in 'Plants Just In'.
PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING!

The majority of the bare rooted plants we have here for sale are specialist plants and are intended for more experienced growers - though they are easily growable they just require a little more aftercare than potted plants do upon receipt. We advise that they are unpacked and potted up immediately on receipt, then kept in a frost free place until all frosts have passed before planting out.

Bare root plants are wrapped in damp tissue or newspaper and packed inside sealed, compostable bags. All our packaging materials are fully recyclable.

Plants can only be purchased by customers in Scotland, England, Wales and Isle of Man. We regret that we no longer accept plant orders from Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and the EU but we can still send seeds.

All of our plants are grown by us from seed, cuttings or division and and all have proven to be hardy here in rural, southern Scotland (unless the description says otherwise).

We will have a different selection of potted plants available from late April through to June.

Until then, we do hope you will find something of interest and wish to thank you for your continued support - it means a lot to us!

All our best wishes,
Lisa & Andrew "

News from Growild:
"Good news to all our friends in Northern Ireland! From next spring we will be able to send plants again without the bureaucratic nightmare and phytosanitary certificate. It seems too good to be true at present, but from what we've been told today from our plant health inspectors, we just need a slightly different Plant Passport that will be on the outside of any parcel. We wish this rang true for the rest of the EU!"
