Rob and Jackie have had an exciting day today at the Alpine Garden Society  AGM -  to quote Rob:
"Truly honoured to receive The Sir William & Lady Lawrence Award at the AGS AGM today from President Christopher Bailes. The citation reads “To recognise his long term commitment and expertise in propagating and making available a wide range of alpine plants to growers of all levels of experience and skill. Rob is also well known for his excellent and informative lectures on alpines and his ability to engender enthusiasm generally for alpine plants.” This award is shared with my fabulous hard working wife Jackie."

A very well deserved award- well done Rob!

Congratulations to Rob and Jackie; richly deserved 8)

But ... the 'Sir William and Lady Lawrence Award' :o
Really?
The poor woman has no name whatever, neither her family name nor even her given name.  Just written out.  Time for the AGS to give itself a good shake :-X >:(

It may be archaic but it does  appear to be the correct appellation and the award has been around for a long time. Just another example of our sometimes weird social history ???

Exactly the point Martin; is this the correct appellation?

Precedent and social history are no defence whatever.  Think of child abuse, racism, slavery.

Surely the principles of equality, fairness and parity of esteem hold for the AGS as much as for the rest of society?

I suggest you look at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(royalty_and_nobility)
to see the difference between Names and Titles. The award is presumably named after the title.
I doubt Rob and family will be concerned.

Thanks Brian.  'William Lawrence': no confusion about a name there ;) ;D

Of course Rob and Jackie have much better things to do, but my point remains that the AGS needs to consider its practice.
