Cleveland Show April 19 2014
« on: April 20, 2014, 07:28:08 AM »
Our Veteran Vet won the Farrer medal yesterday with his huge pot of Fritillaria affinis.  I took a close up as it was impossible to do justice to it with a long shot.   Maybe someone with a better camera will do better.

Last few
Eritrichium nanum shown by John Dower ... Yes, he does have other plants besides his mini gardens! And quite a nice one too....
Benthamiella patagonica shown by Jim Watson
And a couple of my own plants shown in the second division...
Scilla reverchonii which was sent to me long ago by a forumist for which I am ever grateful!!!
And my Primula marginata Miss Fell that has this season won me three firsts, one when it flowered at Kendal and two in the non silver foliage sections at Edinburgh and now Cleveland.
And that's all I took that turned out ok folks.   I'm sure others will add to this...

Personally I think it was the pine cones that swung it :o :o :o

Those pine cones are the best way I've found to keep the foliage neat Martin, I've tried loads of other things but they work best for me ... But it was just luck really...

Beautiful softest-blue gentian from Diane - is this one of the forms of G. angustifolia that Zdenék Zvolánek describes in his article in The Rock Garden 130? This is a picture taken in his garden last May - an exquisite plant!

It certainly is Tim.  We saw lots of them in the Czech Republic last year and they made me drool.  I've tried many times to get them going in my garden but I've had to accept that I just don't have the conditions they need and move on to other things that like it here.  But every time I see them I am struck once again by their beauty...

Many congratulations to George Young on his Farrer with such a lovely Fritillaria - I have a soft spot for F. affinis myself .

If the rest of the show was half as nice as the plants you've shown us, Christine, it must have been super - which means there should be a very happy Cleveland Show Team today, enjoying a relaxing Easter Sunday, I hope.

That's a very nice Primula aureata.
Are there any commercial suppliers of this plant?

It's certainly a lovely colour, Tim.  I bought it from Rob Potterton a couple of years ago. It's a form of G acaulis. I have never had any success with G angustifolia, I think it needs a warmer summer.
