thanks for an excellent photo log.

Frits - I want I want

I have tried F. imperialis so many times in the past. They flowered well and never came back. I might try again. I can imagine 5 or more tower over the rest of my spring bulbs.

Ian what mix are your F. imperalis growing in?

The Frit. imperialis are in our usual garden soil.... will try to say more later but time very short at present!

I did not know there were so many species with check patterns like meleagris. I wonder how similar they are from the point of view of cultivation and hybridisation. I will have to investigate.

Ian, what is the yellow Erythronium in the background in the photo of Fritillaria meleagris on the first page of your April 20th bulb log? You can wait until next week's entry to answer if you plan to talk Erythronium next week...

Thanks all for your comments I am glad that I am still managing to show somethings to interest you after all these years ???.

Mark - The Fritillaria imperialis are my own seedlings and they seem to flower better for me.

David - There are an amazing range of Frits of all colours and many have the checkered effect.

Ed - It is Erythronium 'Susannah' the best yellow hybrid that I know of between tuolumnense and oregonum.

Thanks Ian, yes Erythronium "Susannah" is an excellent yellow, it really caught my eye.  Too bad it is not more widely available.  Compared to Erythronium "Pagoda"and "Kondo" it has  much better form, perhaps because the other parent besides E. tuolumnense is E. oregonum rather than E. californicum (probably "White Beauty", right?).  As a result it would appear that "Susannah" is less leafy and more upright, altogether a better look.  And the color looks to me to be a stronger yellow, though that may just be the camera playing tricks on my eyes...
