Ian, Thank you very much for this most interesting issue. I have an additional question concerning transplanting of very small corms/bulbs - in this particular case Crocus laevigatus.
In which position do you place them in the new pot? Did you try to plant them in their original direction or do you think it doesn't matter if the young corms or bulbs are placed quite accidently?
I ask this because sometimes it is difficult to spot the 'poles' where the leaves or roots sat.

Thanks for your interest Gerd, as you know I do not normally replant first year bulb seeds but sometimes it is necessary for the best development of the young bulbs.
In the case of the Crocus laevigatus seedlings the most important factor when replanting them is the depth in the pot. Always make sure that they are at least as deep as you found them or deeper as required. As a general rule first year Crocus corms are best planted 1/3 from the bottom of the pot.
As to what way up the young corms are does not matter as they will grow what ever way they are orientated.
Where they are spaced in the pot is not a major unless you have limitless time to place each one individually - I don't so I just scatter them randomly and will only move them around if it looks like there are empty spaces with none in.
