Title: Spotted Lantern Fly
Post by: ArnoldT on May 26, 2023, 12:18:16 PM
We have a new pest in town that attacks just about everything.

Favorite is the Tree of Heaven   Ailanthus altissima -

Also grapes, pome fruit , maples cherries and so forth.

A pheromone has been discovered that attracts them and it is Methyly salicyate, better known as winter green.

Attached are some images of the egg cases, first instar phase and views of the traps in place with results.

Another good reason to unban DDT for limited use.

There are  plenty  of organic controls   for the SPF.  The least toxic approach is to use pheromones to trap and destroy them.

I use Spinosad, Neem and Murphy's oil soap for control other than the traps.

I'm not for going back to the DDT route just yet.
