Hi, I've been growing Peonias from seed for a few years now but find that some germinate quite happily after a winter blast but, as the seeds I'm using are not fresh, the rate is not great and some species don't bother to come up at all. I soak them for 48 hours before planting 2 deep in JI no1. I know some put out a root one year and leaves the next. My question is, is it worth giving the seed coats a careful and shallow nick with a knife before soaking, allowing the radical to get moving without having to wait for the seedcoat to soften? All and any advice welcome, I have about 30 packets from this year's seed exchanges 🤔

You may find these links handy - the first two from the website of forumist Gabriela ....

and this from my friend, Sabrina Solskin a paeonia specialist who germinates her peony seeds in zip-lock bags (3 month warm and then 3 month cooler ( about 5 - 10 plus celsius ) for tree paeonies )
Her blog site has different sections ... https://crystalclear.blog/2016/08/09/hardy-peonies/?fbclid=IwAR1H7I_j7EAtPDSImE-kL8C5Khv_TvY9VRLZrgv72bS2qSqPNoEzlqB3cho (https://crystalclear.blog/2016/08/09/hardy-peonies/?fbclid=IwAR1H7I_j7EAtPDSImE-kL8C5Khv_TvY9VRLZrgv72bS2qSqPNoEzlqB3cho)

www.peonysociety.eu (http://www.peonysociety.eu) has a really useful archive of Paeonia newsletters with many articles worth reading eg;
