Title: Bulb log 34
Post by: annew on August 21, 2013, 09:04:03 PM
I do appreciate the novel techniques you think up, Ian. The air pot is a great idea and one I might try with rot-prone bulbs, although with my clay pots plunged in sand, it might not make so much difference.
I feel as excited as you about your new staging etc - how odd that your new equipment should feel like 'mine', it shows how much we become absorbed by the continuing bulb log!

We think the "air pot" technique would work with clay in clay, Anne  - but perhaps to a lesser degree. Certainly worth trying.

Good luck with the re-potting - we've abandoned, too much else to do!

You are correct Anne clay pots already offer better drainage than plastic ones because of their porous nature but in bigger pots drainage and aeration in the centre can still be improved with this method. Another advantage is that you can water through the gravel filled pot delivering the water below the level of the bulbs directly to their roots.

I look at the new staging every day and cannot believe this is our bulb house - next year we will do the frit house as we have run out of time to do it this year.

Well, I'm about half-way through with a week to go before the monsoon, so I'm going for it! :P

Weather forecast for UK this weekend seems pretty wet and stormy in many areas - sounds like the monsoon is starting in nature already!

On Friday night, we looked out as the rain was so noisy, and it was as if someone was emptying a huge bucket over us, almost literally a monsoon. Paddling in the potting area now!

Funny looking flower that, Anne - some kind of Daisy?

Great  idea for a multi-step experiment- good luck!
