Title: Reports from the 2nd International Czech Rock Garden Conference and Garden visits
Post by: fermi de Sousa on May 01, 2013, 05:52:24 AM
We've arrived in Prague!
Will head to Tabor on Tuesday with a mini-van of other Aussies and Kiwis!
I've brought some seeds of South African bulbs and some Calostemma purpureum for anyone who'd like them. First in first served.
cheers

The conference is going well!
Maggi led the last session last night which focused on the Scottish connection and finished with a wee dram and shortbread. It also led to much discussion and social interaction which continued into the night.
There have been magnificent pics and talks. Martin Sheader's was "Flowers of Patagonia" which was shameless promotion for the upcoming book of the same name which I am sure most people here will be ordering once the AGS put out the pre-publication offer! Cliff, sorry to say, though the cover of the book (which was the title page of the talk) featured Ranunculus semiverticillata, it didn't enter into the discussion!
However the images of buttercups and relatives would have had you drooling during Vladimir Epiktetov's talk about Kazakhstan.
Ian Young was as always entertaining and engaging as he discussed bulbs and did a live demonstration of chitting and twin-scaling.
Jiri Alpine Parrot Papousek had all of us swooning with discussion on growing Daphnes in crevice gardens - the Antipodeans especially as we won't be able to buy any from the sales!
cheers

The second day finished with participants very satisfied with a well thought out and fully entertaining program. Vojtech Holubec took us to Tibet - a flowering Paradise - but not always as you'd expect it. Peter Korn showed us that when you are a Viking you don't need an excavating machine to move a mountain! But even a Viking can't control the climate and a summer of continuous rain doesn't suit a lot of plants from the desert regions - but it can be good for some alpines!
Dieter Zschummel then took us hiking in Iran in search of Dionysia and finding them and much more!
A marvelous workshop on how to plant up a trough Czech style and we won't mention the sales!
We were treated to more light hearted entertainment in the evening with the Marika singers putting on a splendid performance with most songs in English and very nostalgic for those of us over forty! A huge feast of Czech catering awaited us and then the leaders took us for a tour of their city through the eyes of a tiurist's snapshots. Finished the night with Maggi auctioning off some rarities from a couple of Scottish gardens - did someone mention a yellow snowdrop?
cheers

Ian,
You had much better weather for photography as it rained most the time that we were there yesterday but we can't complain as we had such good weather the rest of the time.
We saw some very remarkable gardens on the post Conference tour and I'm amazed at the industrious way most of these gardeners have worked to create these masterpieces. Many of the plants were new to me or at least some I'd only seen in pictures so it was great to see them in real life.
Our bus was led by ZZ and everyone seemed to get along; we Aussies were the grumpy ones as we were the only ones unable to buy plants! However we were able to buy some seeds from Vojtech so it wasn't so bad in the end. But the "feeding frenzy" wherever a gardener was also selling plants! You'd think they'd never seen Daphne petrea cultivars for sale before! ;D ( we hadn't !)
We have a few more days to explore Prague (found a nice Chinese restaurant last night  ;D ) and then Will and I head to England then Ireland for more garden visits.
cheers
fermi

It was a wonderful conference and surpassed all my expectations, which were pretty high anyway! Very grateful to see the images of Jiri's garden as my camera battery had run out - I had to make do with sketches! And lovely to see that cameo from Olga - Tabor is a very beautiful town. Hope to write more extensively on the AGS website once a very large number of pictures fill the computer's memory, and also show some of the ingenious methods of packing plants! Thank you to everyone involved in organising the event, and it certainly will always remain in the memory, and a similar opportunity in the future will not be missed!

Post by: Tim Ingram on May 12, 2013, 10:03:34 AM
There were plants for sale at many of the gardens we visited and a 'Dirty Room' was set aside for us in the Hotel to store these over the week; a few lucky individuals even had balconies in which to leave plants. By the final day I had reached the limit of what I could carry home, but further temptation was there at the Alpine Display held in a church garden in Prague. (At its height Zdenek said that this event attracted over 30000 visitors over the period it was held, a pretty impressive reflection on the skills of those who have organised it over the years).

So, packing all these plants? Various clever ideas were discussed and plastic water bottles proved ideal for holding several bare rooted plants wrapped in paper towel and  small plastic bags. Each of those in the second picture held three or four plants. Larger plants, like the small conifers, could then sit on these and be packed around with bubble wrap etc. Jiri Papousek, in his outwardly calm and efficient way, had also arranged for delivery of plants by carrier (TNT), and provided us with packing cases and materials. The technique here was to pack pots with clingfilm wrap (which helped to hold them together), as tightly as possible, so the box could be placed on its side without any plants moving. What happens if the box is turned upside down? Here ingenuity comes into play and everyone developed different ways of packing above the plants using cardboard, old pots and water bottles. If the plants were packed very tightly originally, however, they would be difficult to dislodge, and hopefully the boxes would be transported upright (?!). Perhaps most clever of all was Martin Sheader's packing of smaller cushion-like species which ensured that the plants were held firmly whatever they experienced. (By the way whilst we were all doing this we also cast envious glances at many of the plants others had bought and which we hadn't discovered!).

(to be continued... )

Packing plants 5 is an exact replication of the ingenious method used by Gerd Stopp to transport his beautiful little plants around the world (he uses 'slightly' more sellotape).  They all arrive in perfect condition and provide hours of pleasure in the opening.
Title: Re: Reports from the 2nd International Czech Rock Garden Conference and Garden visits
Post by: Tim Ingram on May 12, 2013, 06:21:28 PM
I have high hopes that my box will arrive in similar condition Cliff - there are some great plants coming, including Callianthemum farreri which was discussed earlier on in the Forum.

The last day in Prague was uniformly wet; frustrating for all those nurserymen and Czech Rock Garden Society members who had brought plants along to their Show, but this is held for a week (or more?) and so holds promise for better weather. Rain really doesn't deter anyone with an interest in alpine plants, so the second picture shows the sales area packed out. As usual in such events everyone heads straight for the plant sales, which is something Shows in the UK could learn from in attracting more members of the public (ie: in the way they are promoted).

By now the final stages of packing plants had been reached - the question: what would the Airport X-Ray Machine and its friendly tenders make of this array of plastic bottles? In the event they had a look and scratched their heads at why anyone should be carrying home such a collection of little plants. Delegates from beyond the EU and the rest of Europe and Russia had to wash plants and obtain phytosanitary certificates (all organised by Vojtech Holubec). The boxes of plants, all carefully packed as though what they contained was as valuable as antique crockery (and surely it was) were left to the kind offices of Jiri, who throughout instilled confidence in us all. These will arrive sometime next week, a little drawn and etiolated perhaps, but a reminder of many remarkable gardens and gardeners. As for my hand luggage - these have now been repotted into coarse sharp sand and left in a cool shady spot to acclimatise, and I have even convinced my wife that dwarf conifers are quite good fun after all!

At the end of the event Jiri wondered if we would take home more than just the plants and actually pick up on the Czech ways of growing (which of course some do already). That would be good because they do grow plants so very well, and I would like to flower my gentians like those in the next entry.

Just getting back on my feet again, been bowled over completely by the Conference and Garden Visits. Anyway, here's my first photo from the Conference for your delight.... Friday night was Scottish Night with such a large delegation attending, including quite a few forumists.  Maggi compared the show which was followed by West Highland Terrier Scottish Shortbread biscuits washed down with Scotch.  Several bottles of Scotch and the room was in uproar.... Here's our moderator in full flow....  A jolly good night was had by all....

I found places for the plants that I took back in my suitcase and hand luggage. Wasn't it a great trip. Thanks to everyone that made it a fun time. It was great meeting folks form all over the world.

I am really glad that I went and the gardens were to die for. Every garden had its own unique style. Just wish we had the weather like they have over there, its freezing here.

Never made it to the chocolate factory but on the first day I found the chocolate shop and the bag of sweeties didn't last long , well they would have melted quick   ;D

I am also waiting for my two boxes of plants to arrive. Happy days.

Thanks again to the folks that made the trip a great success and I can't wait till the next time. Hopefully it won't be to long, want to be able to climb up all that hills.

Will post some pictures later.

We were split into three groups for the coach trips to gardens, and the first one our coach arrived at was the garden of Vaclav Vostrak in Chysky.

When we went through the gate the garden looked very nice.

But when we turned the corner around the back of the house, we saw the rock garden proper!  Wonderful sight....

There was a bed full of witches' brooms.

As it was our first garden, I snapped lots of flowers, here is a gentian and a frit pic

And before we left we were also treated to a tray of apple slice, very tasty....

I am sure that we all had a wonderful time enjoying the places, the plants and most importantly the people.

I have masses of pictures and will post them as I get time.

This first batch shows the ones I took,  just after we arrived, in the town square of Tabor, which was only about 500 M from the hotel.

The old buildings were so decorative -I loved the 24 hour clock face which appropriately has the initials ZZ included ;)
Even the cobbles were laid in decorative patterns.
Scrafitti and basrelief plaster work  as seen here and in the next post.

Hopefully people will continue posting photos and stories about our time in Czech Republic so you will feel almost as you were there with us. I have a lot of nice pictures, but no idea how to convert them from RAW into jpeg. By the time I have figured out how to do it, you are all already somewhere else in your thoughts.

To the people that did go to the conference I just want to say to all of you: A big thank you for making my stay so nice and interesting!

And for those who signed the postcard for my friend who could not come; you really made his day. He got very happy!

The second garden belonged to Mr Bartunek in Zahori.

Lovely well kept rock garden in an L shaped garden full of woodlanders and plenty of frits.

At the side of one of his outbuildings he had erected a tabletop garden packed with interesting alpines.

But of most interest to me was his greenhouse, constructed from large preserving jars turned upside down and cemented together to create a double glazed greenhouse wall.  He also had a lot of flopsy bunnies in a compound, but I couldn't get a picture, they were too shy.

He also had a lovely example of P. auricula which I saw again and again around the gardens we visited later.

Words, as you know, rarely fail me, but I can think of none to tell you properly how warm I felt in all your company, how kind everyone was, what camaraderie there was between people who had never met before, and how generous were our Czech hosts - they deserve the award of the Golden Erythronium for their organisation and the huge effort they made for us all.

I thank you all!

Chris - thank you for the pictures of Mr Bartunek's garden; this was the one garden we missed on the first day and it would be great to see other photographs. Although we were unable to have Conference proceedings I think there may well be even better e.proceedings posted on the websites and I will try to put names to faces and plants on the AGS site - it would be good to document the event comprehensively, and especially the remarkable gardens we visited.

In the meantime I thought the Show held in Prague was an excellent example of alpine gardeners coming together in a very inclusive way and this picture shows a list of all those people who contributed to the Show. Zdenek said that the Show had been held since the early 1970's and had moved from a previous venue to the present one in 1981 (rocks and all). This is a very different but complementary way of showing plants compared to the Shows in the UK, and ties in with the strong Czech ethos of growing plants in a garden setting which appeals to me very much.

Has anyone received their plants yet? My box arrived this afternoon, most plants in remarkably good condition considering that they had been sealed up last Friday pm. These are a few pictures and a comparison with the plants brought back in hand luggage. Specially for Cliff, Callianthemum farreri is in the back row in the second picture looking very happy - will it be a form with good blue flowers?

The last picture shows some of the "Witch's Broom" conifers that were so striking in many gardens. We are going to use these on a display at the Kent Garden Show to show that our very small East Kent Group is truly International in its scope! (Or at least some of its members are). A few of the photos of the Czech gardens may also find their way onto the display with suitable and grateful acknowledgement.

Would it be possible to add some names to the faces seen in these wonderful images please?  Many of us are familiar with most of the faces, but it would be of great assistance to newer and more distant members.
Here's an attempt at some names so far, Cliff:

Starting on the previous page, page 22, with Chris B's pic- in reply 322-  labelled Scottish night, but actually of the plant auction - where I was made an honorary member of the Czech  Team with my very own Czech cap.... I auctioned two Trillium rivale from Cyril Lafong and two bulbs of Galanthus 'Elizabeth Harrison' from, Ian Christie - I was greatly assisted by Jiri and Petr, who fanned me well as I worked! I think it looks like we are a new Rap trio!

In Josef Lemmens' pix in reply 332 on page 23 - in pic 2013056-5006  the main folk visible are, left to right - Martin Sheader, Ian Young,
Michael Clement,   Ian Wright,  Cilla from Ireland, Herman Laporte, ( three figures under tree at rear : 2 unknown) and "Leiomerus" (Jan Fouquaert) , Cynthia Sladen, Kay McDowall, Tim Ingram, crouching front right of picture.

20130507-5239       Zdenek Zvolanek

20130508- 5568   ZZ and Marika - the wife of Peter Divis, one of the Czech Marvels who made the conference such a success who brought her singing group to entertain us in Tabor and also sang to us herself on our last evening.

We arrived safely on Tuesday evening had a 12 hr flight including a 2 hour stop over and could pickup some Dutch cheese at the Amsterdam airport.
I packed my plants Monday evening, I had to remove all the soil 74 plants in total, wrapped them  first in paper towel and then in stretch and seal
Put them in a plastic container with a lid, kept them in the fridge overnight until we had to leave the hotel Tuesday noon, carried them in my hand luggage.
Arriving in Toronto around 3.00 am Czech time, 9.00 pm Canada time, one hours time to home, back in the fridge, and potted them up the next morning.
Put them in the greenhouse under the bench to keep them out of the sun for a  weekor so, and hopefully they will survive, they all looked very promising.
Border patrol was easy, they never took any plants out to look at.
I think they had no idea what some of the plants were, could not find them on their plant list, but they were on my import permit, and that was all what counts
I think we were past inspection before everybody else got through customs.

We had a wonderful time, and would not hesitate to sign up for another opportunity like that.
Met a lot of nice people, and hopefully will stay in touch through the forum and personal emails.
Had one email from Susann already.

My plants arrived this afternoon.  They've been unpacked, watered and put in the shade to get some light.  Most look like they will survive but one box certainly had a bumpy journey.  I'm aiming for an 80% survival .... fingers crossed.  I'd love to go again, am wondering about just a weekend in Prague the weekend of the alpine show at the gardens - but without the rain -  ;D

From Zahofi we went to Nova Vcelnice and the garden of Milan Odvarka.  The intrepid coach driver took us as far as he dared and let us off.  Later, he had to back the coach down the same trail very carefully.  I was on the pond side of it and was relieved when we got back on the main road....  And the rain had stopped too, a big help!

But Mr Odvarka's garden was enormous, flanked on two sides by dense conifer forrest, and quite soggy in places so we were asked to stay behind him and go in crocodile fashion.  I wondered at the amount of time he had spent creating his masterpiece, full of fascinating plants and shrubs.  He also had plants for sale so everyone dived into the area once we'd seen the garden.  But Mr Odvarka also does wood carving and I was charmed by his butterflies and bird sculptures after I'd got my fill of plants.  He'd arranged labels and bags for transporting the purchases too, I was pleased about that!

There were more witches' brooms in this garden.  I became more and more fascinated with them as the week wore on.

After leaving Mr Odvarka's garden our coach got a little lost I think, so by the time we reached the final garden of the day, it was after 6pm.  We were all getting a little tired, but no one wanted to give up the chance to see the garden of Miroslav Stanek.  What a delight it was!  Here I saw more pulsatillas than at the other three combined, they were glorious.  But so were his gentians and many other treats.  And again, plants for sale....
Unfortunately, you don't get the scale of this garden, or the fact that its on a steep slope from my pics, but maybe when others post their pics they will be better.  His tufa area had been planted a long time....

My boxes arrived today and everything looks well. I will have a busy morning tomorrow.it's rain for tomorrow so I will be happily potting under cover. I kept my favorites in pots and all the other ones I wrapped up in kitchen towelling and then cling film. I hope I don't kill everything.

Thank you Chris for spending so much time in posting all those beautiful pictures! It is like see everything again, but through someone else´s eyes ( which, by the way, we had an interesting discussion about over an icecream in Roztoky)
However, when I read something about Pulsatilla I just can not resist to answer. So Chris, may I ask you, am I right when I suspect that you are a sleepwalker? Or, if you were awake;  where were you looking when you walked in the middle of Mr Odvarka´s field of Pulsatillas?

I think we must all have been sleepwalkers Susann! We need to visit the gardens again before too long to see all the plants we missed. I remember Miroslav Stanek's front garden as looking almost impressionistic with pulsatillas, many in seed, tulips and other plants dotted about all over. But I didn't go back to have a proper look. Pulsatillas do look wonderful en masse like this - I tend to grow them in isolation.

Day 2 of our garden visits... a brighter day than Monday and we were all anxious to explore more gardens.  Martin Brejnik's rock garden was quite new compared to the ones we had seen Monday.  Zdenek had told us how long he'd been working on it, but I've forgotten by now all that sort of detail.  Probably Tim will have the notes I didn't write so could tell you if you want to know.
What struck me first, before I went through the gate, was the perfume from the wonderful daphnes he had growing there.
And he had plenty of them!  His work is still unfinished, he's still to sort out the pond area and had piles of rocks that are still to be carefully placed.  He also does some wood carving, and there was evidence that he sits in the shade of his trees doing just that some of the time.  He too had plants for sale, and we all enjoyed browsing through them.

Our coach arrived at Jiri Pospisil's garden before the other coach had left, so we had to wait a while... and then the heavens opened.  it rained very heavily.  it was such a shame as I would have liked to take more time to view the garden.  Luckily, he had a wonderful barbecue area with a cover which we took advantage of, enjoying the hospitality of coffee and some even tasted his beer too!  But he did have a very nice rock garden in front of the house alongside a shaded area where he grew a lot of rhododendrons and other shade loving shrubs.  I took very few photos as the rain was quite a problem.  Luckily it eased off for a few minutes before we had to get back on the coach.

Yes, Jozef and Chris; you are correct.  I really thought you had managed to miss them,  the way you wrote, Chris.

Chris, I have a lot of nice pictures, but they are all in RAW. I can not convert them into jpeg. I am leaving for Picos de Europa Tuesday. As soon as I am back I will download the Lightroom trial ( which only lasts for 30 days, that is the reason I want to wait until I can really use all the 30 days, not being away). But I fear that at that time, all that is to say and show about the time spent in Czech Republis is published and re-published and..So meanwhile, I do as everybody else, I enjoy all pictures you all so kindly has posted.

I still smile every time I think back to the wonderful 9 days I spent in the Czech Republic.  My very sincere thanks to everyone involved in organising such a great Conference and Tour – but especially to Jiri, ZZ, Vojtech, Peter – and their wives and families – for giving me and so many others so much pleasure.  All the hard work and great planning was appreciated by us all.  I’ll be coming back next time.

One of my happy memories is the way the Czechs use rock in their gardens.  This is what I wanted to see and I was bowled over.  Long before I became interested in plants I have loved the mountains and to see alpines grown in rocky ‘landscapes’ in the gardens was inspiring.  Here in Scotland most of our rock gardens are dominated by the plants with rocks playing a very minor role.  I’ve come back home determined to reverse this in my south facing garden and to restore the balance between rocks and the plants that grow in them.  Some iris and other herbaceous plants have already been lifted and moved into pots from the area that is going to house my first crevice garden.

Here are some more of my memories of the International Conference.
•   Friendship warmth and kindness – and lots of laughter
•   Meeting so many interesting people from all over the world and making so many new friends – I’ll try to keep in touch with you and not be too lazy to write.
•   Wonderful alpine plants to see and buy – my two boxes arrived here last Thursday with no damage at all, thanks to TNT.
•   Sitting in the back seat of the bus with Christine Boulby and Tim Ingram
•   Massage from Fermi
•   Czech beer – every bit as good as I remembered it
•   Marika Singers – a blast from the past for Ann Christie and myself – Elvis and Frank Sinatra were a big part of my teenage years
•   ZZ – what great company you are  – how lucky we were to have you as our garden tour guide – hope you got home safely to your beautiful garden after our horribly wet  tour of Prague on Friday

A big thank you to everybody

Angie I hope your boxes have now arrived are are well planted. It was great to meet you too and I enjoyed my time with you both at and after the Conference. Editing - reading back I see the plants HAVE arrived. They will be very happy in the beautiful company you are providing for them. ;D

I just arrived home on Sunday afternoon and I haven't even looked at my pictures yet. I did arrive safely obviously, but only after a serious row with the security police at Frankfurt airport which ended with my getting an apology from them and from the head of security for the whole airport and I shan't talk about it here because it left a very bad taste in my mouth. Maybe I'll email privately in a while when I feel happier about it.

For the moment, enough to say it was a FABULOUS Conference, and I enjoyed every minute; the venue and the beautiful town of Tabor; the talks; the pictures; the magnificent choir and more than anything the wonderful people from all over the rock gardening world but especially those who opened their lovely and most interesting gardens and the small group who organized the event. Everything was done that could possibly be done to entertain us, to help us and to make life as easy and enjoyable as possible for us all. For those who were able to select and buy plants, Jiri especially was a real star with the huge time he spent in arranging packing facilities, phytos, transport arrangements and even persuading the hotels to provide the "dirty" rooms where buyers could clean and pack their plants. This man is a superhero! ;D

By the time I get around to sorting my own pictures, most will have been shown but maybe there will be something in a few days.

And just to add to that Lesley, when my plants didn't arrive last Thursday, Jiri was on the phone to the depot in Durham to chivvy them up, and he later called me to confirm that they would be with me on Friday afternoon, which, of course, they were.  He should be Customer Service Manager of the Year for TNT. Yes it was unbelievable, meeting all those people and seeing all those beautiful gardens.
I don't know where to start in my garden.
Should I redo my troughs, the rock-garden or the crevice garden and in which order.
I'm already looking for stone, and bought a skid of tufa.

A few highlights out of 700 plus photos - the first two are from Ota Vlasek's garden, and the Northern Hemisphere version of a 'vegetable sheep' is around thirty years old! The daphne is probably ten or fifteen years old too and perhaps the finest one I saw (and daphnes were amazing features of all the gardens). The third picture of Paeonia tenuifolia was not even in one of the gardens we visited, just 'bedding out' in a nearby garden! It's easy to see why Paeonia was once regarded as close to, or a member of, the Ranunculaceae; this could be a field of red adonis or anemones - but now peonies are regarded as members of the order Saxifragales and close to crassulas and gooseberries, what hope is there of gardeners making much sense of this?

The last two pictures come from ZZ's garden, our gracious host on our coach - who would dream of a vertical rock face in which to plant out sempervivums?; a pretty good time was being had by all, including the coach driver on the right. How else could you garden on a 45° slope full of rock? Absolutely brilliant.

    Daphne cneorum
    Arenaria lithops
    Paeonia tenuifolia
    Sempervivums
    ZZ's garden

Do you know Tabor has a Botanical garden? Of course it could not compete with private rock gardens. It's just a place for Horticultural academy students practice.

Really brilliant photos! I shall have to go back to Tabor to find all those places I missed. I never knew a dustbin could look so 'right'! I can't resist putting in a picture of two ladies who love pulsatillas...
Thank you Tim.  :) I am unfaithful to Pulsatillas with a Picea at this image.  :)

Maggi, that was not worse I am sure.  :) Every time I walked along the shop I closed my eyes and tried not to think about chocolate.  8)

That's how it is with shoe shops, Maggi.  I was so miserable at not being able to buy plants...... Shoes are a substitute.  Still only managed 2 more pair in Florence, oh and a jacket (or two).  On reflection, plants would have been cheaper.

Lesley, is there anything we should know before we hit security?

Tempting though it may be, actually hitting security may not be helpful, they may get terribly upset.  ;D ;D ;D

Alternatively just aim for a soft spot......  ::)

Hi everyone !
I enjoyed a wonderful time in the nice country of the Czech.
Very nice people also, those Czech ...
It was my first conference and also the best .... ;)
I met many people with the same interest, so even if we didn't understand each other some time, we didn't even need words to show appreciation to one another.
I also met many interesting plants ....I hope the ones I brought to Belgium appreciate me. ;D
The rock gardens were sometimes amazing with plants that fitted perfectly.
I even saw some rock gardens that were higher than mine... :o

Many troughs ! I had never seen that many.
Here they would cost a fortune.
In the garden of Miroslav Stanek, I tried to count them, but I stopped at the number of 25.
I  was only taught at school to count till 25 ...

But this trough in the garden of Jiri Sladek was outstanding !
The best of all !
 :D

Title: Exciting news of a new arrival !
Post by: Maggi Young on July 11, 2013, 12:04:13 PM
News is arrived from the charming Hungarian forumist, Gergő (Gergely) Lunk of the safe arrival of a baby boy!  All Czech conference participants have been waiting for this happiest of announcements ....

Gergő writes:

Dear Czech Rock Garden Conference participants, friends,

we gladly announce that Illés Lunk (probably the youngest member of the "rocky gardening community") was born on the 5th of July weighing 9 pounds and with a height of 22 inches!
He is the 6th grandchild in the Lunk family.

Timi and he got back home from the hospital and both are well. Villő is a proud big sister. We all are full of happiness.

We hope that you all are well!

This occasion gives me another chance to say thanks to all of you, and the Zvolanek brothers as well (Jiri, pls fwd this letter to them!)

our best regards

Gergő, Timi, Villő and Illés

Fondest congratulations to all  the  family - and well done to Timi for coping while Gergő was with us in the Czech Republic! We all thought she was a super star then -  now  we see it again with the delivery of this fine son, Villő's baby brother!

Enjoyed reading about the Conference in the International Rock Gardener - how often are they held?
The comments about small individual gardens being full of keen gardeners made me smile as it reminded me of my recent trip to San francisco with 70 garden bloggers where we too visited small domestic gardens in coaches causing people to come out of their houses to see what on earth was going on!!  It was really good fun although some of the owners looked a little bemused - I wonder if the Czech owners felt the same way

I'm sure they did Helen, there were lots of looks of surprise at seeing coach loads of people on their street.... and some of the streets were not very wide either, just like here, but the coach drivers were amazing and I take my hat off to them once again!

The links Jiri emailed to delegates on the 9th June are, in most cases, very large files and it may be that it is the size that is causing download problems. One is almost 96MB!

I have followed the instructions given today and have been able to download all but one presentation perfectly.  One seems not to be able to complete with its first page but the others are fine. I think that with an uncertain connection or download limits, the size may be the cause of  difficulties.
Title: Re: Reports from the 2nd International Czech Rock Garden Conference and Garden visits
Post by: Lesley Cox on July 30, 2013, 04:25:51 AM
I guess this could be the problem Maggi. It's just the link with the lecture and photo files I can't do and the others are OK or on the Forum anyway. The Dropbox things works OK but clicking on the lecture pinks just doesn't work at all. I've been very patient with them but nothing! I'll email Jiri and see if there's another way to retrieve them.
Title: Re: Reports from the 2nd International Czech Rock Garden Conference and Garden visits
Post by: Maggi Young on July 30, 2013, 10:15:42 AM
I noticed that there is not an option on where to  download the files to- they just go to my "Download" file which is not where I prefer them - I  preferred to open them and then saved them where I wanted them to be.

On my other machine this system is different and so is it possible that for you the files HAVE downloaded, but to a different section, perhaps a "temporary files" area.... this might be less than visible if it's like my desktop machine!

Post by: Susan on July 30, 2013, 11:41:30 AM
I had the same problem, Maggi, and found that if I put the lecture name in the 'Search' bit (bottom left), it showed me where it had been stowed.   Then all I had to do was cut and paste it into the file of my choosing.  The other option is to click the save bit on the PDF when it is downloaded.  Only one did not have that, I think.

I now have them all saved so maybe a USB stick may be the answer, Lesley.

I totally agree with Tim,  a lot of work went into those files and it is much appreciated.  Thank you Jiri.

I have not had much time to look at my photos  yet as I have been busy moving a rather large collection of bulbs  that I have been left,  into my own garden,  so instead of going through my photos during the  winter, the lovely mild weather we have had has been dedicated to recovery of hundreds of bulbs. No doubt I shall be posting photos to ask for help in identification.

That is the case for several friends like yourself and Lesley -  and we will be delighted to see your "memories" of the Czech event whenever time permits.   :)

P.S. good luck with the bulb IDs !

It's odd that when one has at last "retired," there's even less time for the things one wants to do than when one was employed. Perhaps we (I) organized the available spare time better. Certainly I was out of bed earlier than I have been recently. But this winter has been quite good on the whole, except for a couple of wet weeks in June so it's very easy to go out and garden in some way rather than turn on the computer. Having said that I don't want a wet and soggy spring so it looks like earlier rising will have to be the solution. I've not really looked at my Conference pictures at all so far but now that Susan has so kindly put Jiri's files on a stick for me, I'll hopefully get back to the Czech Republic, virtually, and sort my own stuff.

I don't really mean to make everyone not able to attend the SRGC Discussion Weekend jealous  ;)

Lesley - if you look on their website you will see a little comment appearing in the bottom right hand corner about CD's and if you click on it they have produced two CD's of their songs. I would love to go back sometime and see more of the country and the rock gardens and how Jiri's tufa garden is developing. It was a great experience and opportunity to meet so many gardeners from around the world - a real credit to those who organised it.

Thanks for that Tim. I'm afraid I'm not very good at looking for information on websites, even here on the SRGC one. I usually go to a book or whatever. However, I WILL look at Marika's group's site and order something. I think their singing was just superb and exactly what was needed to lighten a very intense and full (but wonderful) programme of lectures. Yes Fermi, roll on the third, but alas I won't be able to go.  :'(

Those who attended the conference and garden visits or who have read and enjoyed these pages, will have seen pictures of the garden of  Jiří Papoušek - some pix from Ian Christie start here : https://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=10484.msg276073#msg276073 - one of the most amazing thing in the garden was the alpine tunnel, with the most extraordinary tufa wall, which runs for around 12m along the side of the house.
Here is Ian C's picture of the wall in May 2013, not quite finished...

and now Jiri has shown this picture of the tunnel as it is now - it  has doors  at each end now...

Not all dionysias are happy there, but I try. Wall is west oriented but shaded by house. After longer experience I will prepare lecture about it."

It's hard to judge from this shot just how wide an area they spread over. It was a breath-taking sight! We were just walking along the road, on our way to a nearby garden when we suddenly  passed this glorious display.

It is my sad duty to advise of the death on 23rd October 2015  of Ota Vlasák, one of the many great Czech rock and alpine growers, who has died, aged 70 after a long illness.

Ota had been ill for some time  but was determined in 2013 to meet visitors to his garden- even managing, having just come from treatment in hospital, to talk to visitors from the 2nd Czech Rock Garden Conference in his beautiful garden.
He was well-known, too, for his work with the famous Prague Alpine plant exhibitions.

Ota Vlasák will be sadly missed by his family and friends, to whom we extend our condolences.
