Title: News from the Crocus Group
Post by: tonyg on November 05, 2008, 08:53:23 AM
Here is the most important information about The Crocus Group - more will follow.

To join the Crocus Group you need to send a cheque or cash for £5GB (Or 10 euro cash) to Mr Tony Goode.  3 Woodland Road, Hellesdon, Norwich NR6 5RA. UK.

The fee is a one off which is only repeated when group funds run low, (perhaps every 5 years.)
We are an independant and very informal group with no constitution or rules!  Just a group of folk with a shared interest.  Overseas members receive one newsletter per year, in the autumn.

The seed exchange takes place in summer and to take part all you have to do is send a request for a list to the seed exchange organiser.  Full details will follow once you join.  Please feel free to contact me via email or Personal Message if you need more info.

EDIT: Please see new notice re the Crocus Group   31st October 2015 :https://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2643.msg343924#msg343924

All the above is true because it happened to me very recently. The only glitch was at this end because I ordered seed of very common species, as I was late in joining and the seedlist had been out for a while. Everything I ordered came, with numbers not names so MAF asked for a list of names (I'll include a list of species ordered next time). I photocopied the seedlist and sent it and they released everything except 2 packets of C. tommasinianus as not on the Bio Index. Of course it is, but mis-spelt, with just one M! More correspondence to MAF and I hope my two packets will arrive here soon. I referred them to "Crocus" by Brian Matthew, but they are a curiously thick-headed lot.

Lesley,

Did you get your misnamed tommies?  I find the Australian quarantine people really helpful myself, releasing things once it has been explained where the problem occurred.  Maybe I've just dealt with the good ones though!  ;D  I hope you got the rest of yours through.  8)

Lesley

I helped this year with the Cyclamen Society seed distribution, and for the Australian members we included a list of seeds with an asterix against those in the envelope.

I will endeavour to get this method for Crocus seed distribution next September and then there should be no problems with the autorities.

Yes thanks, I did get the tommies, 2 packets of mixed forms, so something nice will eventually eventuate :) I see they haven't changed to the correct spelling on the Bio Index though, so anyone else ordering it any time will have to go through the same process. Did I say something about thick-headed?

Arthur, we don't want to add extra work for the seed distributors, so I at least, will include a list of everything I order and subs, and if this can be included with the seed itself, that would solve the problem. It was just that this first time I hadn't thought about there only being numbers on the packets. I photocopied my seedlist and sent it to MAF when the seeds came, it was just that C. tommasinianus was wrongly spelt on the Biosecurity Index.

The seed distributor has just retired - it will give hime something to do  ;D ;) ;D

I'll probably have a senior moment and forget all about it by next September.

I'm hoping that you don't know something I don't Art.  I'll take it that David has given up the day job .... and hope he will continue with the seed distribution for a long time yet.  (At least until he has finished the book he ought to be writing :D)

Advance notice for Crocus Group Members.  It is seed exchange time.  Here is how it works.
Seed Exchange

The aim of the seed exchange is to get seed to members as close as possible to the correct time for them to be sown for optimal germination (in the northern hemisphere)

Crocus seed has been shown to germinate best if sown during the higher temperatures of late summer before the lower temperatures of autumn and winter initiate germination.

The best time for sowing is therefore at the same time as nature does it in the wild, that is when the ripe seed is expelled from the mature seedpod in late spring to early summer. For this reason we ask donors to send seed as soon as possible after they have collected it, and in any case before 31st of July.

On the 1st of August a seed list is compiled and sent to members who have requested a copy by sending me a stamped addressed envelope, again before the 31st of July. Overseas members should not stamp the envelope, but an International Reply Coupon would be appreciated.

Members should indicate on the seed list which seeds they want up to a limit of 30 packets, and the seed request should be returned before the 31st of August. On or about the 1st of September the seeds are divided between the members who requested them, with donors getting first choice, although non donors always get a good deal. You will receive your seeds within a few days after that. They should be sown immediately and left exposed to the weather until they germinate, after which they may be brought under cover.

Donations of seed and requests for seed lists from non donors should be sent, before 31st July each year to:-

David B Stephens
‘Green Hollow’, 76 South Terrace, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 2AQ, UK.

Hi Tony do donors have to request the seed list or is automatic for donors?
Always best to request, then there is no chance of confusion.

Below is an article by David Stephens from the forthcoming Crocus Group Newsletter giving more information about the seed exchange.

Crocus Group Seed Exchange 2009
The aim of the seed exchange is to get seed to members as close as possible to the correct time for them to be sown for optimal germination (in the northern hemisphere).

On or about the 1st of August a seed list is compiled and sent to members who have requested a copy by sending me a stamped addressed envelope, again before the 31st of July.

Donations of seed and requests for seed lists from non donors should be sent, before 31st July to: - David Stephens, ‘Green Hollow’, 76 South Terrace, Dorking, Surrey. RH4 2AQ, UK.

To recap:
Rule 1. If you are a donor, send seed to me before 31.7.2009
Rule 2. If you are not a donor but want a seed list, send a SAE to me before 31.7.2009
Obviously, donors always get first choice and very rare seed in short supply invariably goes to them. However, non-donors receive a fair proportion of what they ask for and always get a good deal.

Some statistics last three years:
Year   No. of Crocus group members   No. of members requesting seed list   No. of members donating seed    No. of seed lots offered
   No. of Crocus taxa represented
2008   184   61 (33%)   28 (15%)   110   65
2007   166   61 (37%)   27 (16%)   148   74
2006   153   64 (42%)   26 (17%)   159   73

The Crocus Group seed exchange has I think been very successful and instrumental in getting most of the known Crocus taxa into cultivation. When I managed to persuade Primrose Warburg to allow the first seed exchange in 1992, it was very difficult to get hold of many Crocus taxa, even some of those we would consider fairly common by today’s standards.

One of my frustrations as curator of the exchange over the years has been that for the rarer taxa there are never enough seeds to make more than just a few packets. Obviously, most members request these so most will not receive them. These are distributed by a blind draw among the donors. Very occasionally there are enough seeds to allow everyone to have a packet such as with Crocus michelsonii in 2007. However, even with such small numbers of seed available these rare taxa are becoming slowly more widely grown. These last few years has seen the distribution of small quantities of Crocus wattiorum so in a few years time hopefully this will be more widely grown.

Can I urge members to make an effort to try to get seeds from their plants and to swap them in the seed exchange; this is one of the major ways to increase their availability and your collection. It can be difficult to get Crocus seed set in bad growing seasons particularly on the spring taxa. But, if while you are examining your flowering pots you carry a paint brush or similar implement, you can assist nature by becoming a pollinator. Growing bulbous plants from seed does not seem to occur to a lot of otherwise good growers. Perhaps it is the fact that you have to wait a few years to see a flower that deters. However, other than this, the process is extremely easy, just put Crocus seed in seed compost in a pot in late summer, expose to all weathers until germination then put under some protection from excess cold and water logging. Keep on the dry side over the late spring and summer then repeat the process. A few years doing this and you will have the pleasure each year of seeing new flowering pots of Crocus of your own making.

You should have had a newsletter in July.  Articles by David Stephens on seed exchange and Janis on diseases.  I am working on a pdf newsletter with pictures.  Don't suppose you would let me use the great Crocus hadriaticus pic you posted recently?  PM me if you did not get the newsletter.... but I'm pretty sure you did ;)

To join the Crocus Group you need to send a cheque or cash for £5GB (Or 10 euro cash/£8GBP for non UK) to Mr Tony Goode.  3 Woodland Road, Hellesdon, Norwich NR6 5RA. UK.

The fee is a one off which is only repeated when group funds run low, (perhaps every 5 years.)   We are an independant and very informal group with no constitution or rules!  Just a group of folk with a shared interest.

Hi Geebo - above is the relevant info.  (Actually is the first post in this thread.  I think I need to repost in a new thread and lock the thread so it is easier to find)  We are encouraging all members to use email communication for newsletters as this allows inclusion of colour pics and will make the subscriptions last a lot longer.  The seed-ex is the main attraction for many as it gives access to a range of species and forms not easily obtained elsewhere.  Unfortunately it is completed this year.

I am mailing an e-ewsletter to 123 CG members tonight ... could take all night but I'm off to bed, Outlook is in charge.  Apologies to anyone who gets it twice but I got a returned message "too many recipients" when I sent it as one mass mail.. It proved quicker to send to everyone (seperately :P)  than to pick out the 'losers' from the return message!

I am interested to know if it has arrived OK ... and if not PM me and I'll sort it.  The file is big @ 3mb pdf (like the Bulb Log).  I tried saving it smaller but lost a lot of quality in the images.  Any ideas for doing it better gratefully recieved.

It will all be familiar to Forum readers but hopefully pulling related things together helps.  I am hopeful of some input from other CG members (non forum) in future.

Roger Holland writes of C. biflorus ssp weldenii albus ,that the specimens he has seen do not match the description . Here are pics ( taken yesterday) of what I grow under that name , are they wrongly named too ? What is your verdict?

Hi Croconuts,

Can anyone tell me what the decided name for this plant? It was thought to be an aberrant form of sieberi grown by Alan Edwards and purportedly from a wild seed collection on Mt Idi, (AGS Bulletin Sept 1998). I think David Stephens tentatively named it Edwards Gold?

Hi Marcus
If there is only one yellow sieberi around it is known under the name 'Midas Touch'.  It is considered a hybrid C. sieberi and most likely C cvijicii.  In his book Janis refers to this plant as having been raised from seed of garden origin which makes me question  whether yours is a different plant. .... Or perhaps there is some confusion ???

Hi Guys,

The lemon coloured crocus I put last week is "Midas Touch". I received it directly from Alan Edwards. If you check David Stephen's article in AGS Bulletin Sept 1998 you will find that it was sent as seed to Alan from Ray Cobb with obviously the wrong provinence. Your explanation certainly seems more plausible.

Lesley my pic might just be a bit over exposed, either that or they were turning flowers.

Whatever it is its a beauty.

BTW Tony I am not on the Crocus Group mailing list anymore. Do I need to send 5 quid to you or what?

Cheers, Marcus

Hi Tony, I got my newsletter OK, thanks. Did you get an email from me? I sent it a few days ago right after I had the newsletter. I had a couple of suggestions re seed sources but I don't remember whether I sent it to you or the Crocus Group address. My newsletter came in a batch of other addresses as well and when I sent mine back I think there was one that was rejected as undeliverable but I'm not sure whether the others were OK or whether it meant that none had been delivered.
Hi Lesley - yes, thanks I did get the email.  Have not yet found time to reply to everyone who wrote  :'(

Naturally, the SRGC Forum will continue to offer a home for the Group to enter discussions with all the Crocus enthusiasts and to keep the Crocus Pages  (http://www.srgc.org.uk/genera/index.php?log=crocus)up to date.

UK donors send to me by 31st August.  Overseas donors to Wim Boens.  I will forward all UK donations as one package to save UK donors EU postage but you are welcome to send direct to Wim also if you wish.  A newsletter should reach members in the next 24 hours.

Here's an advance view of the Seed-ex details

Hello to all Croconuts,
I’m the new seedex-manager and I’ll try to do as wonderful a job as David has done in past.
So, let’s get started; like in the previous year’s it’s the aim of the seed exchange to get Crocus seed to members as close as possible to the correct time for them to be sown during the higher temperatures of late summer for optimal germination. Crocus seed has been shown to germinate best if sown during the higher temperatures of late summer before the lower temperatures of autumn and winter initiate germination. The best time for sowing is therefore at the same time as nature does it in the wild, that I when the ripe seed is expelled from the mature seedpod in late spring to early summer. For that reason we normally ask members to send seed as soon as possible after they have collected it, and in any case before the 31st of July.
Since this year I’ve taken over the job a bit late, we’re moving the date to the 31st of August.
During the first week of September I’ll compose the list and e-mail it to members who have requested it (Donors who are members will receive the list automatically). Your request for the seedlist should reach me before the 31st of August too. See e-mail address below.
This year I’ll use the same system as David used last year, donors will be allowed to choose from the list, non-donors receiving pot luck. Next year (depending on the seeds we receive) I’ll see if I can get non-donors to make a choice from the list again. Orders should reach me by e-mail before the 30th of September. I will try to send all orders out before the end of October. Seeds should be sown immediately and left exposed to the weather until they germinate, after which they may be brought under cover.
Requests for the seedlist should be e-mailed (before the 31st of August) to: seedexcrocusgroup@gmail.com
Donations of seed can be send to:
(For the UK):
Tony Goode, 3 Woodland Road, Hellesdon, Norwich. NR6 5RA
Tony will forward all UK seed as one package, saving UK donors additional EU postage costs.

(For the rest of the world):
Wim Boens

With the kindest regards

In the July Newsletter I appealed for help to breathe new life into the Crocus Group.  Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond.  You may have noted from the header above that we have a new committee.  Reflecting the international nature of our group the committee is drawn from members across the globe.  This will be my last Newsletter but I will be continuing to handle membership enquiries and to help co-ordinate the group activities.

John Grimshaw (UK) and Matt Murray (AUS) who will be known to some of you, have jointly volunteered to take on the role of Secretary/Newsletter Editor.  Based at opposite ends of the world the plan is that John will report on the Northern growing season while Matt will do likewise for the southern hemisphere season.  Both are botanically trained and employed in horticulture, they will introduce themselves properly in the next Newsletter.

Wim Boens who lives in Belgium has taken on the role of Seed Exchange Manager.  Details of the planned 2014 Seed Exchange are included below.  Please take special note of the new Seed Exchange email address included below

This is bad- I collected them in Austria

Daniel, this failure of the post is very disappointing for you.
When one considers the massive volume of post whizzing around the world I suppose it is remarkable that  problems do not arise more often but that is no consolation when you experience such problems - and more than once.  :'(
A great pity that your kind donations have not reached the crocus seed exchange.

Hi Daniël,

that is a real shame, we can always use some more seeds in our exchange. If you're still up to it for next year, please try posting them to my address in Belgium...and let's hope they arrive here.

All the best

By late summer to come (Jan/Feb) I should (may) be able to spare for distribution, say 3-6 small corms of Cr. olivieri ssp. balansae 'Chocolate Soldier.' But I can't send them to Matt in Australia for a list and if I send them to the UK there is the problem of acclimatization (the turn around to opposite seasons. Possible but sometimes tricky.) I could sell them here of course ( a number of local people have asked for them) but I'd really like to share this outstanding crocus more widely. Any suggestions?

Hi Lesley as you say acclimatisation to the northern hemisphere is tricky but not impossible. What if you split the bulbs sell half locally to your neighbours and send the other half to the srgc seed distribution or all of them if you'd prefer. There's a chance they could end up anywhere, there's members in many different countries.

Yes there was - the seed arrived here today.  I have yournameatxtra.co.nz on the membership list.  Summer newsletter had details of seed-ex.  I'm guessing yours got lost in the post ... I do not send them out any more but when I did I found a proportion from every multi-address mailing did not arrive  :(

Hello Ruben

Germination hasn't taken long --18 packets of different Crocus from this years exchange were sown at varying depths in the first week of Oct and germination at various stages is occurring at the moment in 16 pots....

A small sample is shown .

C. tournefortii cotyledon above the surface.

C. cartwrightianus cotyledon growths yet to reach the surface.

C. adenensis with what looks like root radicles emerging.

Cheers Dave.

PS Maggi not sure if this posting should be in this thread ........

Plans afoot for a Crocus/Galanthus event  taking shape on Facebook......

[attachimg=1]

Tony Goode (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?fref=ufi) Superb .... and some nice companion planting for the crocus in your garden too.Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?fref=ufi) Wonderful... need to have another talk sometime on Crocus Tony Goode (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?hc_location=ufi) or Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi), especially how they associate with other plants. These really light up the autumn garden. Must grow more of them. Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?fref=ufi) Tim (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi), I'm sure that could be arranged in the coming years...Paddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?fref=ufi) we could sort it with Hampshire AGS Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi) & Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi)Paddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?fref=ufi) !'m putting together 2017/18 Sept ~May Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?fref=ufi) Wim (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi), I remember a very enjoyable (and generous) 'Snowdrop & Crocus' day in Chris Brickell's garden many years ago. There are Snowdrop meetings everywhere for plantspeople through the winter, but it would be great to celebrate a wider compass of flowers and in autumn too... and just seen Paddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?hc_location=ufi)'s comment! Scope for something interesting as the autumn colours reach their peak.Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?fref=ufi) Paddy (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?hc_location=ufi), Tim (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi), autumn of 2018 would be better for me, a talk about autumn flowering Crocuses and how they combine with other plants. But maybe Tony Goode (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?hc_location=ufi) has a good talk about this, so you could have one in 2017?Paddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?fref=ufi) 2018 good, Ive September 2018 booked but free Oct NovemberWim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?fref=ufi) October 2018 sounds fine to me, but like I said maybe Tony (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?hc_location=ufi) has one ready for next autumn? Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?fref=ufi) Paddy (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?hc_location=ufi), Wim (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi) - October would be good! I know bulb sales normally come earlier in autumn but maybe this could be combined with a display and sale of bulbs (autumn snowdrops Emma (https://www.facebook.com/emma.s.thick?hc_location=ufi) et al?) and several speakers? And a good garden?! It is a time of year to savour. Any thoughts Tony (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?hc_location=ufi)? East Anglia is such a kingdom of bulbs that we could learn from you all there too. And/or have a travelling event year on year?Emma Thick (https://www.facebook.com/emma.s.thick?fref=ufi) We are planning some thing here at work which will be around I think the 5 November for Autumn which I think is a Saturday, more details to follow Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?fref=ufi) Maybe travelling speakers then?  Emma Thick (https://www.facebook.com/emma.s.thick?fref=ufi) We have one speaker already lined up .Emma Thick (https://www.facebook.com/emma.s.thick?fref=ufi) I will make a copy of this conversation and show my head gardener and bossPaddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?fref=ufi) Have linked you all in to a group message Emma (https://www.facebook.com/emma.s.thick?hc_location=ufi) Tim (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi) Wim (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi)Tony Goode (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?fref=ufi) I am always up for an opportunity to talk about crocus Tim Ingram (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi) and Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?hc_location=ufi), and Emma Thick. My impression of the Plantsman's World at the moment is of many different groups and societies with common and overlapping memberships but not common events, which may not always encourage new gardeners to get involved? Paddy Parmee (https://www.facebook.com/sonygirl717?fref=ufi) Need to get our heads together Tim (https://www.facebook.com/gillian.ingram.733?hc_location=ufi) Wim Boens (https://www.facebook.com/wim.boens.1?fref=ufi) Tony (https://www.facebook.com/tony.goode.754?hc_location=ufi) and/or John (https://www.facebook.com/john.grimshaw.108?hc_location=ufi) might be better placed to involve the Crocus Group in this...I'm separated from you guys by some water

Margaret Young (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100009129399731&fref=ufi) Interesting to see this conversation of a joint Crocus/Galanthus event..... puts me in mind of the SRGC/Cyclamen Society weekend in Penrith! Such an event would, of course, be possible to be advertised in the extensive Crocus Section of the SRGC forum - where many of those there on Facebook originally met, I think!

Ladies and gentlemen, please, when harvesting seeds/cormlets and corms of Crocus, don't forget this poor seed-exchange manager of the Crocus Group who would love to be overwhelmed by the amount and number of Crocus sent in for this year's exchange. Every amount (1 seed up to 1 million of seeds) of every Crocus (the most common and the most rare and recently described) is very welcome. Just harvested some pods of C. michelsonii here today, see below...

Hi Maggi,
I was concerned when I read your message and wondered why I hadn't received the list. However when I re-read the email from Wim (sent in May) it cleared said that to receive the list you had to request it by August 15. I understand that as a small volunteer group they have to set cut-off dates to be able to do the work effectively.
Now I have to go and continue sorting seeds to send to the Seedexes!

Having been involved in sending out the CG Newsletter in the past, I recall problems with failure of bulk emails which may explain David not receiving his.  A proportion of the intended recipients did not receive the mail for reasons that were not always apparent.  I think the suggestion of an announcement here is a good idea.  The seed-ex is the work of a very small team who do the job in their spare time.  I am aware there has been no newsletter this year but the seed exchange continues.  I will contact Wim and we will discuss options for better communication, most importantly using the forum more effectively.

I got the seed list without any problems and I have already received (and sowed) the seeds. :)
Thanks to the seed ex team!

But I think it is a good idea to use the forum to avoid any issues regarding emailing the seed list.

In general I see a tendency to use Facebook more and more for posting pictures instead of using the SRGC forum. In my opinion we should use the Forum as much as possible to keep it at the current high level.

I'll make sure to post all correspondence regarding the CG seedex here too, but there will still be an e-mail sent out and I expect all contacts to go by the e-mailaddress of the seedex...for now, all seeds were sent out and I've closed the seedex for this year:

Seed-exchange Crocus Group  2017 closed

Some numbers regarding our last seedex.

We made about nine small packets of seed from 212 different species/cultivars/forms of Crocus which were sent in by 36 donors and sent out to 53 members.

Here below the top 10 of the “most wanted” species, but almost all seeds were asked in high quantity. As always, I could not give everyone everything they asked for, but I did my best.

No.   Name                           Packets asked

40   cvijicii ex JJA 343.600          21
188   vallicola ex AHEP 8328          21
76   hartmannianus                          20
187   vallicola                                  19
15   autranii                                  18
25   caelestis                                  17
54   fleischeri JATU-017 (cormlets) 17
75   hakkariensis                          17
115   nubigena                                  17
83   karduchorum ex JJA 0.346.301     16
84   karduchorum R. & R. Wallis 09-175     16

Total price for sending to a member (package and postage) was up to 4.63 € p.p. this year.

I would like to thank the donors for taking the time to collect and send the seeds, the members who asked for seeds and Luc Gilgemyn for helping me with the packaging of the seeds.

Looking forward to a year with a good seed set and a wonderful seed-exchange next year.

Happy sowing/growing,
Wim Boens
Seed-exchange manager.

Who can explain the 8 tepals of this crocus, which is a hybrid of two tommasinianus varieties?
Beside the 4 inner and 4 outer tepals this crocus has 4 anthers and a stigma which is quartered.
Mistakes during ontogenesis of flower parts when they were formed during summer rest period. This year many crocuses (actually not "many" but more than usually) had such flowers, some even 12 and more flower parts instead of normal 6. I suppose - induced by high temperature.

Helo Tony,
did you see a spring blooming crocus with 8 petals? See the attached foto. It is a hybrid of tw tomassinianus varieties with 4 inner and 4 outer petals, 4 anthers and a quartered stigma. Do you have any idea what happened with this crocus?
Kindest regards Klaus

Happens quite often - there have been several reports of such flowers in the forum over the years. It is not usually a stable feature.

A comment  on the virtue  of the  Crocus  Group Seed Exchange to  a member in  New  Zealand ... ( this goes for  other  seed exes as well, of course!) ......  "Please do collect seed for the exchange. It is our only route for importation into New Zealand, as we are not permitted to bring bulbs into our country. We really do appreciate the seed exchange!
This weekend I have planted out pots of tiny crocus bulbs I germinated from the 2017 seed exchange...thanks a million to those who donated. Hopefully I will have pics to post in a couple of years! "

Dear fellow-Croconuts,

the time has come again to ask for your donations of Crocus-seeds and corm(let)s. The pods are forming already and they promise a good seedset, so I’m looking forward to getting a lot of seeds from many people all over the world…with your cooperation we can share those wonderful gems with each other, so a big thank you goes out to all donors in advance. Please don’t hesitate to send in small amounts of seeds, even a couple of seeds can make someone else very happy! Also, seeds of more common species and cultivars are more than welcome, since they are especially good for starting croconuts and people who want to sow them directly in the garden to get a more naturalised look.
This year, as in the previous years, I will be accepting corms and cormlets in the exchange too. It has shown to be a good formula; many members only want seed, but quite a few like to get young cormlets or some bigger flower-sized corms too. So if you have any corms and/or cormlets to spare, please send them in.
Here’s the rundown: like in the previous year’s it’s the aim of the seed exchange to get Crocus seed to members as close as possible to the correct time for them to be sown during the higher temperatures of late summer for optimal germination. Crocus seed has been shown to germinate best if sown during the higher temperatures of late summer before the lower temperatures of autumn and winter initiate germination. The best time for sowing is therefore at the same time as nature does it in the wild, when the ripe seed is expelled from the mature seedpod in late spring to early summer. For that reason, we normally ask members to send seed as soon as possible after they have collected it, and in any case before the 15th of August.
During the last weeks of August, I’ll compose the list and e-mail it to members who have requested it (Donors who are members will receive the list automatically). Your request for the seedlist should reach me before the 15th of August too. See e-mail address below.
Donors will be allowed to choose from the list first and non-donors will also be able to make a choice from the list and I will take into account what they ask for as well. Orders should reach me by e-mail before the 15th of September. I will try to send all orders out before the end of September. Seeds should be sown immediately and left exposed to the weather until they germinate, after which they may be brought under cover.
Price for ordering seeds is 5 €/order. To be paid with the order, before the 15th of September.
Requests for the seedlist should be e-mailed (before the 15th of August) to: seedexcrocusgroup@gmail.com
Donations of seed and corm(let)s can be send to:
(For the UK):

(For the rest of the world):

With the kindest regards
Wim

Regarding the Nagoya Protocol:
The reputation of the Crocus Group is at risk if we offer seed that has been collected illegally, or that does not have permission for distribution. This could do harm to future attempts to people who want to collect legitimately. The Crocus Group is not able to check every seed submission, so please do not submit seed that would put our reputation at risk. Please also retain documentation giving any relevant permission for as long as possible!

From Wim Boens about the  Crocus  Group Seed  List:

This year’s list is a lot smaller (both in individual species/cultivars as in seeds received) than the list of the former years. A lot of people reported a bad seedset, some even lost a big part of their collection. We almost didn’t receive any wild-collected seeds and some of the bigger donors had no seeds to give this year Let’s hope next year is a lot better! As always, let me start with a huge thank you to the donors; without you guys, we couldn't do this, so THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Here goes! Seedlist in the attachment. All of you (non-donors TOO) can e-mail your wishlist! You may ask for up to 20 packets of seed, but a lot this year are in short supply, and donors get the first pick. Just e-mail me a list of twenty numbers and make sure to add your name and address. Please add a list of possible 2nd choices so I can send you some of those if your 1st choices are no longer available. Please send your wishlist before the 15th of September

Also please inform me of things I have to know when sending seeds to your country. Within the E.U. there's no problem but I'm not sure about members in the U.S. and in Australia and New-Zealand.

This year we have some cormlets for offer too, these can only be sent to members within the E.U.

 PAYMENT!!

The funds of the Crocus Group have dried up. So, from last year on, we ask for a payment of 5 € for any seed request.

Payment should accompany the request and should reach me before the 15th of September. If I haven’t received your payment by that time, I won’t be able to send out your requested seeds.

There are three ways to pay:

1 For people in the Eurozone, it might be easiest and cheapest to pay directly into my bank account. Just request my bank-data with your order and I’ll mail you my IBAN and Swift codes.

2 You can pay to my Paypal-account: it’s this address: seedexcrocusgroup@gmail.com. Please make sure you pay me 5 € with all costs for you (as a gift).

3 You can mail a banknote of 5 € to this address:

Wim Boens

Brugsesteenweg 17

8750 Wingene

BELGIUM

Seeds will be dispatched within the last two weeks of September. You’ll be notified by e-mail when your seeds have been sent out.

My seeds arrived yesterday and have now been sown after their soaking. Thanks to the Group for organising this wonderful thing!  :)

Also this has prompted me to get my act together for the SRGC seed exchange, as I had to clean and packet my collected seed (which had been sitting in the glass ramekins on the table) so I could soak my Crocus seed.....

An appeal to UK Crocus growers.   The Crocus Group Seed exchange UK arm is, as expected, rather light on donations.   If you are a UK based grower and have seed to donate please do so ASAP.   Anyone can join the group.  The only charge is to cover cost of the seed exchange, there's no membership fee.  Donors get priority in the exchange.  Please contact me if you want more information and for my land address if you can donate.  crocusgroup@hotmail.co.uk  Thanks

AGSVG Special Interest Group: Crocus
The AGSVG is delighted to announce that we now have our first 'Special Interest Group'. Mat Murray approached us about setting up a specialist group under the AGSVG umbrella, with a focus on the genus Crocus.
Mat will be submitting regular articles (including cultivation tips) for the newsletter and the journal. The first official article is about care of autumn flowering crocus. Mat hopes that by encouraging local members to participate in the AGSVG Seed exchange by collecting and distributing Crocus seed, we can promote the growing of this wonderful genus in Australia.
To join the Crocus SIG you simply have to belong to the AGSVG, there are no additional fees or requirements. If you aren’t a member yet, please contact us agsvicgroup@hotmail.com
cheers
