Burnby Hall Gardens

I'm working on a book on water lilies for Reaktion publishers so went to Burnby Hall Gardens today to look at their National Collection. The water lilies were fabulous but I also enjoyed their rock garden which was originally made by the firm Backhouse of York. Like the rest of the garden it was looking very well maintained and planted;

They have a stumpery, inspired by the one at Highgrove with a 'hobbit house' and some nice wire netting bird sculptures;


And of course plenty of water lilies on the main lake

This one was labelled 'Marliacea Chromatella' but google implies that one is should be yellow??

It was a popular visit for families and the carp in the lake caused much amusement with adults and children alike - in their frenzy to get thrown food they were splashing anyone close to them;


But the biggest problem I found was choosing between the rum and raisin or the orange marmalade ice cream - so took the sensible option and had both....
