Good evening Pleione lovers !

This isn't really about Pleione but almost 

Joining Mr Ian Butterfield seems to be a little bit difficult for foreigners ... I just found the phone number but I don't want to call i the UK (for 2 reasons : the price and my accent which is incredibly atrocious  )

So I was wondering how could we get his catalogue ?

Catalogue is free, but Ian does usually ask for a couple of stamps to cover postage for new customers.
As this would not be possible for you I am sure he will still send you a copy.

Well, I can put several stamps on the mail but they will be useless for him except if he collects them or if he goes to France then 

I have chocolate scent stamps ... maybe I could ask for a free Pleione in exchange

I need some help 

I received the catalogue and i built up a short (lol) list ... but now comes the problem of the payment !

How do foreigners pay orders ? I mean giro cheque is mentionned but I don't have the slightiest idea of what could this be ... is that only british ?  Furthermore I don't know any british bank (at least I ignore they're british) so I can't ask any to draw a £ cheque; and they won't do so if I am not owning an account in one of these bank, will they ?

I was thinking about paying by bank transfert (what I did the last time I paid an order to the UK) but there is no sign of IBAN/BIC (SWIFT) codes ... should I ask Ian Butterfield by mail ? (this is going to take time, although I would like to order some winter-flowering hybrids)

Ian Butterfield has no computer and therefore no e-mail address.
I usually simply post my order - including the money in cash - I know it sounds a bit risky but that's what I do.
Paying by banktransfer is enormously expensive and more looks like bank robbery    ... but the banks are the robbers.

Well, bank transferts are free for me if I do it by my bank's website. 

Do you send the cash in a normal mail ? In the catalogue, it's written "use registered post" .... what does that mean ?

Registered post is post that can be tracked .
 Ian will have to sign for this to prove it has been delivered.

Most people can send money around the EU for free via bank transfer but you will probably find if you send to the UK you will be charged as its not mainland Europe.

I have received money in the past and then found some very unhappy people when they see their bank account and a charge for 20euro!!!! just to send.

When buying Cyps from Germany I send money via Paypal to a German friend who then sends direct via bank transfer. It costs me about 2.5% more but is still far cheaper than sending via my bank and less risky than cash.

Paypal is very useful, I find. I think more places will begin to accept it and make it worthwhile for more of us to use.  If I'm looking for some thing online and I see they take Paypal then that is my preferred method of paying for goods.

Hi Max,

Ian Butterfield is a friend of mine and he lives very close by. If you wish to order from him you can pay me via Paypal and I'll give him the money. Paypal charges the recipient a percentage, so you should add 4.5% to your payment or I shall be out of pocket (it's happened before).

If you want to try this, send me an email (mtalbot@talktalk.net) and we can discuss off-line. Alternatively I can ask for his bank details and email them to you. You would have to make the bank transfer in Pounds Sterling. Looking at his current catalogue, he says: Orders to EU countries add £3 for postage. Orders over £50 postage and packing free.
