Title: Visiting Wisley- help please
Post by: Maggi Young on February 24, 2011, 07:57:28 PM
Hi Folks,
A couple of  Scottish members are planning a visit to Wisley and ask for some advice about best travel arrangements via public transport and also can anyone suggest ( by PM or emai lto me  if you prefer) a decent but not too expensive Bed and Breakfast nearby ?

They'll be thankful for any help you can give.... thanks in advance!

Train from London Waterloo to Woking, then taxi to the garden.
In the Summer months, a dedicated bus service from Woking station to the garden.

I usually take a train from Waterloo to Surbiton station (trains are frequent and it takes about 20 min). There is a bus service from there to Guilford through Wisley gardens hourly. It takes app. 45 minutes but it is a wonderful drive especially in spring. If it is not too late I can give the bus number and the time-table tomorrow

Oleg, thank you,  how wonderful to be getting such international help for these friends thanks to you and Giles!

I don't think the visit is for a little while yet, so there is not a big rush.  :)

I remember very well how problematic it was for me to find a way to Wisely when National Express cancelled the stop there. Even in the RHS office nobody could help. I find the way above the most comfortable. So, local bus # 515 runs from Surbiton station (actually it starts from Kingston, but via Kingston it takes more time) 9:19 then at these minutes past each hour until 18:19. All you should do at Wisley Gardens bus stop is to cross the motorway over the pedestrian bridge and stroll for 3 mins to the Garden gate.  Buses back are at 9:o2 and like this until 18:02. It's the timetable for Monday to Saturday. On Sundays service #515A is quite rare but rather comfortable and takes less than 30 mins.: there - 9:49; 11:49; 14:19; 16:19; 18:19 and back 10:56; 13:26; 15:26; 17:26. At least this was valid last August. To make sure it hasn't been changed I would try the Traveline website's trip planner closer to the date of the journey. Hope it was of help.

Thank you Chloe.  These are the things we need to know.  I am arriving in London before the pre-conference Tour and two of us will be meeting at Heathrow on the Friday and travelling to Guilford,  so we can have a day or so to get over jet lag and so we can have an extra day at Wisley.

I have been looking at timetables and that  site is very useful.

Hi Maren,

The Pre- Conference tour starts at Wisley and ends at Nottingham.  I just need to get from Heathrow to Guilford where we are staying, which is why I found the Transport info useful.  Sorry if I gave you false hope of a get together!

We are visiting the Netherlands from Canada.  We are planning to go by ferry on Sunday night, landing at Harwich on Monday morning.  We will catch the train to London, on our way to tour Kew Gardens.  We are staying in a B & B in Richmond by Kew for two nights, and want to know the best way to get to Wisley from the Kew area.  Either by bus or train What is the best way?
Or perhaps by taxi and what would that cost?

You can get a train from Richmond to either Byfleet & New Haw or West Byfleet , from £9.20 return per person depending on time of day, takes about 50 minutes to 1 hour,  http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/,  then it will probably be best to get a taxi from there to Wisley

Hi Arie,
By road from Kew to Wisley is about 27 miles if you go via the M3 and M25 and takes about 35 minutes driving. I'm sorry but I have no idea what a taxi would cost for that distance/time. The alternative is train from Richmond to West Byfleet and then taxi from there to Wisley (about 4 miles so this should not be too expensive) - this is the route as suggested by Neil in the previous post. The only bus that comes to the garden is the one detailed also in previous posts - route 515.
Hope this helps a little

Paul

Hope you have a great visit, Arie... and that the weather is kind to you - it's very cold and windy up here in Aberdeen!
