First of the season, Narcissus grandae, sown 11/2016 from Rafa's seeds.

They are very lovely - the first one is very special with the lobed and frilled corona. What does N. ‘初雪’ look like?

A translation site showed me that the name refers to "first snow" so I was guessing a good white- so I did a Forum search, and yes, it is! See YT's other photos from previous years ....

Gerd
What a long lasting flower, Gerd.
I'm challenging to grow this tiny species but looks I have to wait its flower until next season.
-
First year flowering, sad looking cantabricus flower. Badly deformed I think

Don't be downcast, David, lots of first flowers of bulbs tend to be a bit squiffy - other new plants too, for that matter. In future years it'll probably be gorgeous.
-
The "real" Narcissus romieuxii "Julia Jane"
-
A very good plant for the rockery is this hybrid Narcissus bulbocodium genuinus x Narcissus albidus ssp. albidus.
A good dark colour and flowering over a long period.

Sumptuous isn't it? But its hybrid is even lovelier.

Our hoops have been scenting the greenhouse for a few weeks. What a joy they are while we wait for the trumpets!
Narcissus Columba, Kalyke, Elara and an unnamed one.

So many beautiful daffs, Luc! Your early flowering deep yellow hybrid hoop is my favorite.

What a remarkable seedling! Is it a chimera? I wonder if it is stable - is it the first time it has flowered? Questions, questions....

You are getting some wonderful things from that cross. I crossed Shiraume with Tethys and am awaiting results :)

Thanks, Anne!
Yes, I think its is a sectorial chimera. The sectorial chimera is unstable as you know...
And yes again, the seedling bloomed the chimera flower first time. The plant showed first flower in 2019 and put plain pale cream flowers since then.

Outside in the rockgarden
Narcissus minor subsp. brevicoronatus
Narcissus asturiensis
-
Wonderful little clumps! Do you have slugs or snails? They would eat all the flowers if I planted out into the garden.

Well, we eat the f** snales
No problem for narcissus

;D ;D ;D

Narcissus Minicycla has a lot to answer for! It was not being able to buy this little daffodil that made me start hybridising way back in 1988. In true Yorkshire fashion, if I couldn't buy it, I would make it myself! My very first attempt at hybridising is still with me - seedling number 330, 34 years old and looking great.
-
Some more recent varieties -
Angelina is very early to flower, competing with Little Finn.
I think I may have overdone things a little with Pallene - the flower is HUGE!
-
The species are not forgotten - the first photo is a selected clone from seed ex 'tananicus' which I don't think is a valid name. Lovely anyway.
Narcissus bulbocodium graellsii - single clone
Narcissus romieuxii FS 26/1 in its best flowering ever.
Narcissus zaianicus lutescens x cantabricus
The wonderful 'organ pipes' of N. romieuxii rifanus
-
A couple of varieties from Brian Duncan - Punk at only 10cm high, a really cute little daffodil.
Galantoquilla is the one Brian calls his 'snowdrop daffodil' - similar habit and size and flowering time to snowdrops.
-
Narcissus cantabricus petunioides – possibly my favourite form of N. cantabricus.

Very nice selection! Especially the distinctive flowers of the rifanus variety are great!

They are all appealing, Anne!
1988, the year you started the career as a daffodil breeder, reminds me Kylie Minogue - I Should Be So Lucky.
-
Narcissus ‘Tethys’
A generous friend of mine sent me the bulbs in 2017 ;)
-
Wonderful narcissus everyone, not many around my garden or greenhouse, past problems with narcissus fly.
Will have to try again.
-
Narcissus bulbocodium survived the storm, a bit late this year.
-
I'm surprised the narcissus and galanthus still have flowers attached!
-
Narcissus ‘Tethys’

If only mine would be so compact! They look especially nice gown by you.

An exciting discovery was made today, amongst some seedlings grown from seed collected off N. jacetanus and sown in September 2015. This was most unexpected and quite lovely. I suspect a cross with N. ‘Candlepower’. There are two more seedlings coming up to flower, so we’ll see what they produce.
-
A cutie with its mother's frilly trumpet!
-
Two more seedlings in the same pot have open their flowers. One is typical of N. jacentanus, but the other is also pale like it’s sibling. However, this one is probably a better form (from the shower’s perspective) as the tepals are not twisted.
-
How lucky you've got that tiny white trumpet, Matt!
Please add my name on the waiting list ;)
-
Narcissus papyraceus, JJA 702.720, “almost certainly originating in Morocco”
-
Narcissus tazetta 'Hoopoe'
-
Narcissus ‘Tête à Tête'
-
Narcissus cyclamineus

Thanks Tatsuo! Luck and a little bit of work by the bees. Hopefully I can nurture it and bulk it up.
-
Narcissus papyraceus, JJA 702.720, “almost certainly originating in Morocco”
Beautiful and so compact. Ours grow about five times taller here with our poor light levels.

Very happy group!

News from Plant Heritage:
The Narcissus (Backhouse) National Plant Collection has been awarded for the detailed research the Collection Holders have undertaken, from contributing to medical research to international field studies.
"Caroline Thomson has worked tirelessly over the last two decades researching and trialling the Backhouse daffodils which has resulted in discovering several lost varieties, her collection being accredited as a National Plant Collection in 2016, her family commended by the Houses of Parliament in 2017 for holding Scotland’s first Daffodil Festival and now being given scientific status.
The Backhouses were renowned daffodil breeders and as a descendent, Caroline strives to continue the work of her forebears. The hybridising programme which her family began in the 1800s is reflected across the daffodil growing world today, and continues to thrive in Fife where her collection is held via a series of unique new demonstration beds that showcase ground-breaking cultivars and plant ancestries. Caroline is also working with the University of Cambridge contributing to Narcissus medical research trials. She is a speaker at international conferences, and regularly publishes new research. "

" Very interesting piece, recently published, about the citotaxonomy of Algerian narcissists and that confirms our way of understanding some parts of the gender that he refers to (e.g. , N. elegance, N. Pachybolbus)."

Very sad to learn the news today, from his old friend Kurt Vickery, of the death of retired nurseryman and narcissus expert, Mike Salmon.
A small comfort that Michael was able to see the publication of his book in 2017. One of the great narcissus lovers gone.

Sad to hear that.

Kevin Frediani relates:" Fantastic morning evaluating the first year of the @DaffDNA ( The Daffodil DNA Project - A colloborative project between schools and scientists funded by the Royal Society partnership grants to decode the genetics of daffodils) project Dundee Botanics with STEM partners from James Hutton Institute & Univ. of Dundee Life Sciences division plant sciences with Jorunn Bos, Suzanne Duce (Researcher at Univ. of Dundee) & Liz Lakin plus many researchers who we will hear from at JHI this afternoon."

Take the basal plate off for dinner, Anne - it can get stuck in the teeth!!

Here's an unlabelled Div 6 flowering now in a raised bed.
It could be 'Papa Snoz' from Keira Bulbs or something similar from them as I had planted a few of theirs here but the birds have removed labels!
cheers

Yes, Maggi,

It does look like Papa Snoz!

Thanks, Anne.
I know I bought it from Keira awhile ago.
Here's a seedling hoop which I think is from 'Kojak' as it has similarly "pleated" cups,
cheers

Papa Snoz is quite fertile so you should be putting some pollen on it Fermi.

Okay, Graham, I'll bite.
What is the daff in the first two pics?

Crikey! That's and odd one - folk will love it, I bet!

One of the autumn flowering narcissus - Narcissus viridiflorus
-
The winter species everyone should grow: Narcissus tazetta. The scent is strong and it scatters by the greenhouse vents.
These plants were sown 10/2015.
-
Beautiful Yann, so it took 7 years from seed to flowering? impressive...
You must be so thriled to see it in flower after all these years :-)
-
Scented flowers are especially wonderful in the dark damp days of November.

Indeed despite being an overseen species it's always a joy to remind the packet of seeds and the date on the label.
