Scottish Rock Gardening In The 20th Century

Scottish plant collectors, growers and gardeners have had a major influence on the developemnt of Rock Gardening and the general understanding of alpine plants during the 20th century.

This book covers all aspects of the development of rock gardening in Scotland under two headings. On the one hand, it focuses on the pivotal role of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the early collectors in providing the impetus for the formation of The Scottish Rock Garden Club in 1933 and its subsequent growth to become the largest horticultural society in Scotland. On the other; it provides an illustrated survey of the species of rock plants introduced during the 20th Century from different parts of the world, other than western Europe. The story embraces the role of Scottish collectors or those with Scottish connections, both private and professional, the contributions of many discerning growers who have done so much to establish new and often demanding arrivals, the changing fashions at the Club Shows, comments on the most notable Scottish rock gardens together with a review of technical advances in rock gardening and the scope for conservation. The survey of introduced species reveals not only how regions differ in which plant families and genera have contributed most to our rock garden flora but includes sundry biological information and comments on cultural needs. There is a comprehensive index which includes synonyms.
