SRGC Discussion Weekend 2012- Dumfries 28th to 30th September
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:25:01 PM »
The 2012 SRGC Discussion Weekend will again be held in Dumfries at the Cairndale Hotel.
Those who enjoyed the event organised by the three SRGC Groups working together as the Reivers will want to make an early booking, I suspect!

Those who did not attend will likely have heard what they missed and  be making a date intheir diary to avoid  missing out again..... :D

See this thread for some flavour of last year's event: http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6340.0

I can tell you that there are some absolutely smashing talks lined up by some top notch speakers.... some of whom you will never have had the chance to hear before in the UK, let alone Scotland!

More info  later....... ;)

I think so, Shelagh... Ian and I will be booking. Hope to see you and the Best Dressed Man there too?

For a taste of the show at last year's event, see Brian and Shelagh Smethurst's show report in the Rock Garden #128, pages 74-77. Also, John Owen's article on being a first time visitor to an SRGC Discussion Weekend  pages 72-73.

This brings me to mention the Bursary available to an SRGC member who has never before attended a Discussion Weekend.... we, the Forumists, can nominate someone for this place... which will be drawn at random from names put forward by the various Groups.

I think by September my wife will be sufficiently schooled in growing alpines to need the Discussion Weekend (after a side trip to Norwich earlier in the month!). Some really exciting speakers and the chance to visit Logan Botanic Garden again! I shall have to be on best behaviour so I can broach the subject...

A message from the Reivers.........

We have had some enquiries about what the Reivers are up to in September. Remember the Discussion Week-end this year is September 28th – 30th  - we have put together an excellent programme of outstanding speakers.
On Saturday morning there will be a couple of practical sessions with the choice of a photography workshop and another on looking at colour for those with an artistic bent – and a paint box! There will be only a few places available at each workshop but for most delegates there will be an outside challenge – Christie and Co. to the rescue of an hotel ( flower!) bed. Help us prepare the ground and set out plants.

All this will be on a take or leave it basis or optional in other words.

We hope Ian Young will lead the photography workshop and Rosemary Cox, the painting workshop, with Ian Christie outside ‘under the gazebo’.

Speakers this year include some old friends like Henrik Zetterland; some young pals like Tim Lever and several new ones not heard in the UK before, from far away places AND with strange sounding names. Oron Peri is from Israel and from the Low Countries comes Clint Callens. AND THEN there’s everybody’s favourite John Massey, now hopefully over his surgery. A local lad, Colin Crosby, is travelling from Wisley to tell us a frightening tale and we couldn’t have a DWE without a member of the Botanics staff, this year we have Mark Watson with words and pictures from Nepal.
We are always on the lookout for plants for the raffle and members’ stall and this year is no exception. Bring us your doublers, extras even your misfits and anything and everything you can for the raffle. On the Show side we have a new class and trophy for a photograph of a Scottish native plant.
Last year we brought you local delicacies chocolates, mint cake and mead plus the surreally named Fechan Tart. What will appear this year? We can only suggest that you make your way to the Cairndale to find out.
