We gardeners here in N Ireland have the famous Czech Zdenek Zvolanek visiting us. He has just make a huge rockery at Pershore and is here for two weeks. While visiting he is doing 4 different gardens ranging from a 10 ton rockery to a trough. He leaves here in mid October and goes to Montreal Botanic gardens to make a rockery there. He was with me today making a crevice garden which he made and planted in just over 4 hours. I was his go-for. Here are a couple of photos to show what happened. No before photo because I was away getting top soil.

He's amazing, isn't he? He was hugely popular at Alpines 2001 with his talks and demos there. I didn't see him, sadly, since I was go-forring for Ian Y and Sandy L for their demos at the same time. My sense of wifely duty was strained that day! Zdenek went on after the conference to help make a new garden at Ron McBeath's, as I remember. It seems he never rests, always travelling the world with his great ideas. Congratulations to you in N. Ireland for securing a visit. You might tell ZZ that his admirers in Scotland were asking for him. |

late last night I was thinking we should have let the Scottish Rock know he was here and sent him your way. Margaret and I are taking him to the Mournes today. Will I ask him if he would like to stop in Scotland on the way home from Canada? |

You are very fortunate to get such a great feature for your garden created by the Crevice King, himself! It looks very good indeed already. Just shows, too, what can be achieved in quite a small area. I'll bet the plants are going to enjoy it as much as you do! |

Mark it looks fantastic - we had been planning a trough structure by house - now we are thinking of putting that on hold (troughs all ready to paint and go) and rearranging the bed to the south side of pond to create a real proper crevice bed! When you finally get to visit I'm sure you will find lots to nit pick about - but we'll have had fun anyway! Did you see Davie Sharp's garden at Lhanbryde whilst you were over? When you realise he has only been there for a few years......... |

yes I did and it's brilliant. I badly need a new greenhouse to keep up with everyone. I'd love to be able to have a 20 feet greenhouse like Ian Bainbridge so I can have plunges for alpines, Cacti, Crocus and South Africans |

This is the crevice garden fully planted. I was told by Boss Z "no bulbs allowed" but I might sneak in a wee Crocus or Galanthus
ZZ and Harold discuss a miniscule plant others would walk by and not see. ZZ spotted it from 6 feet up.
