Narcissus eystettensis
No this is not an April fool this is a Narcissus of sorts.
Narcissus eystettensis or 'Queen Anne's Double' is a mutated form that has been grown since around 1600 (that is not 4pm but the year 1600AD).
Narcissus eystettensis
The closer you get the worse or better you like it!!!
Narcissus eystettensis
If you do not think of it as a Narcissus it may be ok.
What do you think ? Do you like it ? or Hate it?
Answers to the forum please.

These are all good flowers, Mark. I esp. like Colleen Bawn and Elka. Good luck at the Show in Dublin and safe journey. We're off to Stirling on Saturday, not much for the competitive classes but we're taking a few pretties for a display. Ian's giving the Easter Lecture to entertain the folks while judging goes on. Hope the weather is nicer than at present so we all have a good trip and the show gets lots of visitors! Anthony Darby won't be there, he has been consumed by his monster caterpillar, shown in Alpines General page of the Forum, I hear. He shouldn't have picked it up with his bare hands!!

Elka starts with a darker trumpet which fades with age. I'll take a photo of a fresh flower tomorrow. Margaret Glynn went green with envy when I told her it was 'Candlepower'

Well, she would, wouldn't she? I could have believed it myself if you'd told me that. Is it the same sort of size as Candlepower? It does look quite dainty.

Mark, we have to get a life!! Your post has made me trot outside to see what the temperature is here in Aberdeen. The rain has stopped. it's quite windy and the thermometer reads 0, plain zero. I'm looking on the bright side, for someone like Clay, in Alaska, it's probably -20 or worse!

Okay, Margaret, I'll take the bait. You're close on the temperature. It was bright clear and -14C night before last, the coldest night of the year, by the way, our April Fool. Last night was a different story with an Aleutian Low moving in and raising temps to 4C. It is blowing 40-60 kilometers per hour right now, and raining heavily. I have been dying to post my first picture, and will try here. I have been too embarrased to post pictures of the mundane commercial bulbs I've been blooming though they're all firsts for me and I'm excited as can be. Instead I'll post my new greenhouse (still under construction) and the fresh meter of snow we got over the last two weeks. It clearly shows what's blooming in Cordova, Alaska today: Absolutely nothing

Scoliopsis halii

Narcissus 'Douglas Bank' with my finger in for comparison of size

Narcissus 'WP Milner'

Trillium rivale 'Roseum' AM form from Harold McBride

and lastly N. romieuxii flowering outside in a raised bed where I was told it wouldnt survive

We're back, too, from a grand day at Stirling. Some horrible weather, but home to sunshine! All the flower power at the show would have cheered Clay in his snowy waste. How good to see pics of one of my favourite plants, the Scoliopus. They are both amazing intricate flowers, and the diminutive size of S. hallii has to be seen to be believed. For anyone unfamiliar with it, the stem is about 4-5cms and the flowers must be all of 10mm across. S. bigelowii is a little larger, the flowers perhaps 20mm from tip to tip, and so finely marked, also the leaves have brown spots when they are young. These fade as the leaves age and grow. Very interesting plants.
I am surprised that Elka is so very small, I thought she looked about 18cms or so. Where did you get her??
Are you safely home from Dublin, Mark, how did you get on?

I got four seconds for Cymbidium goeringii, N. 'Toby', N minor 'Pumilis' and N. 'Little Beauty'. 'Toby' would have got a first except for a stray unknown Narcissus bulb in the pot. One person told me to leave it in as the judges would allow for me being new and another said remove it.

'Elka' came from Broadleigh.

Mark
I think from the picture that the Narcissus you show as N romieuxii is a form of N. bulbicodium.
The flower shape and the fact that the anthers are held well down in the tube suggest bulbicodium.
There is however no reason why N romieuxii should not grow outside for you in a sunny well drained spot. It will suffer if you get a severe winter or very heavy rainfall in summer !!

Glad to hear you had a successful outing to Dublin, Mark. Were many of our other Chums, down, too? There were lots of great bulbs at Stirling. Fab frits from Fred Hunt, neat narcissus, inspiring iris, elegant erythrioniums !! There were masses of "real" plants, too, of course!
Cyril had huge cushions of Androsace and mats of Sebaea, spires of Orchis. What a grower that man is. You will be able to see him on the Forrest medal pages, with the winning plant.I know that this is "show" talk, but it is also "flowering now" so hope it passes muster!

Here is a pearl of wisdom from one of our customers when we were discussing the growing conditions for some plants, he suggested they had an area which had well drained moisture! now that is something we do not have, not sure if we ever will. Mark I look forward to seeing you all on 24th April at greenmount.

I've never been that close to a 'Billy' but will have a closer sniff of the plant in the morning. I hope it's OK to have the Pelargonium in? I do have two growing outside in my raised beds and will show these when they flower. They are P. quercetorum and P. endlicherianum.

yep I was rough and only getting my voice back. After the show I went straight to bed - plants still on the back seat - and didnt surface for 16 hours which was quite scary. I turned down lunch at Margaret's because I wasnt feeling too good but did manage to plant most of Ian's goodies but along the way managed to mix up some labels which I had re written on black labels. ID photos soon.

I guess the Trilliums are Bob's and the Adonis is Margaret's?
