It is hard to believe that it is October already, where has the year gone ?
I suppose that Autumn means gentians and here is a couple of nameless asiatic hybrids.
gentian 1
gentian 2
The other sign of Autumn is the fungi that are appearing in the garden as well as the woods.

Here's another autumn narcissus out now in the greenhouse. The plant is 56cm tall with 2.8cm diam. flowers and needs a big deep pot.

This clump of Crocus medius seems to like this spot in the rockery and is increasing well.

I have just received this email from Ian Christie in China and thought this is the best place to put it. If all goes well and I get further comunications I will post them also.
Hi to all the trip has gone very well so far with wonderfull mountain views the best being at Siguniang with a mighty peak covered with snow we have seen many exciting plants Meconopsis punicea and M. integrefolia also many primulas rhododendrons androsace but the best has been the Gentians in full flower we came on a meadow with several thousand G farreri a real blue which took my breath away. We met a Tibetan family today who helped us and we had a good time with them, a hot bath and a good dram as it has been very wet today all the rest of the days have been warm except one night we had a thunderstorm with hailstones thank goodness we did not get caught out in that anyway must go for now but will be in touch later cheers Christie.

It is not just the bulbs that give us colour just now but also the autumn leaves.

It was during a november holiday on Cyprus when I saw masses of Narc. serotinus flowering near Paphos, where lots of warning-boards were placed, not to take plants out of nature. But seeing how the labourers shovelled hundreds of sq. meters top soil into the sea to build hotels on the cleared places, I could not resist taking 3 bulbs home.
Narcissus serotinus
I did not realise I had to wait about 8 years until they flowered the first time with me.
This summer seemed hot enough for the bulbs to set flowers.

Thank you Luit and Anthony for sharing these lovely autumn flowering narcissus with us.
We have grown many of them over the years but sadly they did not find the Aberdeen conditions hot enough for them to flower on a regular basis.
If summers like the one we have just had are going to become the norm maybe we should try them again but I just think the long hot summer was yet another twist of our very variable climate.
Colchicum 'water lily' has no problems with our weather.

Here is the latest report from the explorers.
Hi to all, we are now in Abba and have driven up to 4000 meters across a vast grassland about 150 km the last 50km we saw at least 10,000000 Gentians yes it seems a lot but we drove for an hour where every square meter was covered what a sight. Anyway we have collected over 200 different seeds:- Mecs,Primulas,Androsace,Daphne,Podophyllum
Paraqulegia, gentians,Rhodos, and many more. The weather has been good so far but very cold at night,
cheers Ian Christie

I thought that I would show that it is not all bulbs that we grow in pots (yet) we still have an alpine or two. Also as we only took it to the Aberdeen Show this year people who are used to seeing this old friend were asking how it was.
Our Raqoulia eximia was sown in January 1987 and is still going strong. I believe that the new growth roots down into the cushion which acts like a sponge retaining moisture so if you let it get dry you have lost it. I also have never removed the odd dead bit to tidy it up as this would also allow moisture to escape.
Raoulia eximia
The secret is to always water overhead and never let it dry out.

Thats good but I'll still have my doubts until the leaves are fully grown. Where was your source?
